Title: Wht languages do you know?

I know English, French and Chinese (Mandarin) beyond reasonable fluency and currently I'm picking up Spanish.

Good thing there's no "Other" option.

Latin - enough to translate most stuff in my head

English, Spanish, and French.

I took Spanish in the 9th and 10th grades, and French in the 12th.

I can understand Spanish pretty well.

I'm surprised at the number of people who can speak French; I was always under the impression that Spanish was the "other" language that you learn in America.

I know a bit of French due to this city being practically billingual (not officialy though) and I am trying to become fluent in it for my political career. But, since i am not fluent in it I only chose English. Je parle en francais un petit peut. :)

You all should know what my native tongue is by now, so I won't elaborate.....

I took classes in Japanese and Spanish since I was in 3rd grade.  And I don't remember a thing since I never found occasion to use what I have learned in a real-life situation.

English - native language, fluent
Spanish - working knowledge, better at reading and writing than speaking.
French - some knowledge of basic grammar and vocabulary; could probably read a French newspaper and have a basic idea of what was being discussed.

Born in the Netherlands.

Dutch and German are quite similar... perhaps due to the Germans invading us repeatedly over the centuries...

English, basically. I took two semesters of college Japanese (other language classes were at inconvenient times) and forgot most of it afterwards. I also tried Spanish and Dutch but didn't have enough time to practice regularly. I am a terrible, terrible American. :P

Dude, that's pisspoor. :)  But you don't need to worry; you speak the language of love, the international language. :)

Nation, since you're apparently into trashy older movies (based upon your membership in the John Waters cult), did you ever see "Better Off Dead" with John Cusack?  I think it came out in 1985.  There's a hilarious scene involving this fat, nerdy kid and his equally fat and out of control mother, with the mother saying that her son and a French exchange student who's living with them are speaking the "language of love."  Of course she was delusional.  The girl was really cute and wanted nothing to do with her son; she was after John Cusack, who was pining after this bitch who dumped him.  Of course, they got together at the end, as always.

Native Born English Speaker

I took French for 4 years in Middle School & High School, I can speak and read at a good level but can't write too well.

I took 1 year of Latin, the teacher never taught us how to speak it b/c she said it was a dead language anyway!

My ancestors were German, so I know a few phrases. As one of the robots said in MSTK3K, "Ah German, the language of love."

One of the biggest mistakes I ever made was to not take Spanish. That decision will haunt me as Spanish becomes more and more common in the coming years.

But sounds very different, more like Norwegian or Danish maybe. I met once in a train some people who talked a strange language. I thought it was Hungrian. I was surprised when they told that their language was Dutch.

German - fluently (duh)
English - fluently. I do have an accent though
French - not really fluently, but easily well enough to get around, and get complimented on by the French (something that will hardly ever happen to even the most fluent foreigner in Britain or America, btw)
Italian - I can still read and understand Italian quite well. I used to speak it much better than I do, due to lack of practice. If you put me down into an Italian family, I'd probably start speaking again soon enough
Spanish, Dutch, Latin, Russian, Hindi - I know some set phrases. I can understand a fair bit in a written text. That's about it. (Yeah, I can read Cyrillic and Devanageri)
Arabic - I tried to learn once, for a couple of months, but I've forgotten almost everything

Title: Re: Wht languages do you know?

Fluent English, enough Spanish to begin to get by, kind of (For instance, I can now say such handy phrases as 'Vostotros estabais comiendo unas faldas.' :D :D :D which I'm sure I will use many times)... I'm starting to understand the difference between the pretriere or however you spell it and the past imperfect, whoop whoop!

Heh.  I'm doing Spanish 2X over the summer so I can skip it... little did I know before starting it that you could skip 4X anyway >_< so I would never have to double up.

Oh well.

See my profile for a handy Ebonics phrase in Spanish ;D

I also know a few words of French (My most complex sentence is probably 'My name is Cheese', but due to psychotic French spelling I haven't the faintest idea of how to spell it), German ('Ich bin ein gutenhosen!' is probably the most complex sentence.  If there should be umlauts somewhere or if I spelled something wrong, too bad >P), Chinese (I can say 'ni hao' reasonably well I'm told, and I was learning a bit more before I forgot it all over the summer), Japanese (Konnichiwa, adigato, sayonara, ichi, ni, san... I also know how to play rock-paper-scissors.  That's all I learned from my 6 day Japanese immersion camp I took after 3rd grade to learn how to translate Pokemon cards, which I didn't :P), Russian (da, nyet, bAbushka, and, yes, the a should be what is stressed not the 'u'), and Polish (I know how to say 'pig'... but I can't spell it for the life of me :P darn Polish :P).

Though I only voted for English and Spanish because those are the only languages I have at least pseudo-kind-of-sort-of-fluency in :)

How dare you not include Latin! You'll pay for this! :P

Well I know three:

French: Enough to get by though I'm rather rusty
Latin: Rather good knowledge of it

Doesn't look right. Vosotros, just for instance.
[]quote]I also know a few words of French (My most complex sentence is probably 'My name is Cheese', but due to psychotic French spelling I haven't the faintest idea of how to spell it),
Quote
Je m'appelle Fromage. Not that there#s anything wrong with French spelling. You can tell how a word is pronounced from the way it's spelt. It just doesn't work the other way round, unless you're speaking to someone with a really really thick Occitan accent.
Quote
German ('Ich bin ein gutenhosen!' is probably the most complex sentence.  If there should be umlauts somewhere or if I spelled something wrong, too bad >P),
That looked well until the last word, which doesn't exist.
Quote
Russian (da, nyet, bAbushka, and, yes, the a should be what is stressed not the 'u')
Of course.

I know English isn't your first language, so I'll cut you some slack. When someone says "good old <fill in the blank" it doesn't mean they are referring to something that's actually old. Like I could say "It's been a while since I've seen those good old boys" when referring to some guys I've known for a while. It's kind of a southern thing too, so I wouldn't expect it being taught in an English class.

English (inc. lots of regional dialects)
Welsh (enough to get just about by even if I don't know a whole lot of words. Actually a very easy language to pronounce (despite popular myth), you just have to get over the different-but-the-same alphabet)
French (reading; o.k. listening/speaking; not bad; writing; dire)
German (dire. But more than most people over here; the traditonal source of german words is old WW2 films)

I would say:

Finnish

Swedish, German and English , speak and write

Hungarian, Estonian and Komi (at least I used to)

Danish, Norwegians, Low German and Dutch I can read to some extent

Romanic languages: I do not have a clue

Slavic languages: Some Russian very slowly

Other languages: No, only phrases

Why no Spanish?

Not completely; I've been known to use the phrase "good old (noun)" as well, and I'm about as un-Southern as you get. :)
Quiet, Gabu, I'm tired of you and your shaggy beard insulting me.

You need to have a talk with Archie Bunker.

I wasn't joking, Duck Sauce.

I am ethnically Chinese so I know that. And Canada is a bilingual country so I know English and French. Polish? Not yet.

English, though I can butcher it some days.  I also have or had a working knowledge of Japanese, Korean, Tagalog, Chamaro (Guam's version of Spanish), Mandrin/Chinese, Hawaiian, and Latin.  Of all of those, only Tagalog and Chinese are the two foreign languages I still attempt to use, but that's because the two gals I like are Filippino and Chinese.  hahaha
