I'd say no, but you never know with Trump.

It would be a really bad move for him his approval ratings would plummet further and some republicans might start to support impeachment

Leave the party? Probably not, but somewhat plausible. Changing to a different one isn't even the latter though.

If the GOP ditches him he might start an "Americans for Trump" party.

This would give him a little more freedom as he wouldn't have to worry about pleasing groups in the GOP he doesn't care much for (social conservatives, libertarians, etc.).

I could certainly see him going Independent (he's done it before) - especially if his team has data suggesting that his core supporters don't necessarily see themselves as Republicans.

A poster above makes a good point that leaving the GOP opens a major door to impeachment since he would feasibly lose the support of GOP leadership and core identifying voters (who do still wield power in the party).

If he does, he can kiss a second term goodbye.

No, even he realizes that if he removes the (R) next to his name, he can't win.

Why bother?  The GOP is already pretty much a mix of the Constitution Party and the American Independent Party.  It is no longer a party that either Ronald Reagan or even George W. Bush would recognize.

Ofcourse it is, especially close to the party of Reagan.

Absolutely not.  He's locked into the GOP and he knows it.

Yeah, he's almost as unlikely to switch parties as Susan Collins!

I might actually agree with that now.

I really thought Collins would leave and become an Independent caucusing with the Democrats.  I can still see her becoming an Independent caucusing with the GOP, but maybe not.  The GOP lost control of the Senate after failing to placate Jim Jeffords on a parochial issue, so perhaps they've learned from that.

Only scenario I could see would be to Independent if he loses the 2020 GOP primaries.

Reagan was in favor of H1B, free trade, and America being the leader of the free world.

To what?  The Democrats would reject him.  Maybe the Constitution Party would take him.

It would be great if he did, but I doubt it. He would most likely create a new party or become an independent.

Hey, they're probably desperate enough to take him.

Not a chance, but I hope he works with Dems on things since the GOP clearly can't get out of their own way. A grand bargain that traded dreamer amnesty for border security and tax reform (including an increase for the top personal income tax bracket, but cuts for corporations and closed loopholes) for entitlement spending cuts... Obama and the GOP nearly struck such a deal before the Dems decided they wanted more revenues than initially agreed upon. I also think he could gut free trade deals without having to compromise anything because he would likely get substantial Democratic support and be able to whip enough Republicans into line to make it happen. Finally, he could get universal Dem support on infrastructure and once again whip enough GOP legislators into line to make it happen. The debate about healthcare though would still be bitter and will likely go nowhere soon.

If Donald Trump is a "constitutionalist", then I am pro-choice, pro-SSM.  He's about as far away from the Howard Phillips line as one could imagine.

Trump does seem to like the Democrats a whole lot more on a personal level and he's shown us to be unpredictable so I don't see why not.
