I found a lot of it to be funny on the whole (actually she was way better than Hassan Manaj) but yeah, what she said about Sarah Huckabee Sanders was just mean-spirited and not particularly funny either.

I liked her attacks on the media, but it was only slightly funny overall. She made a lot of jokes that were awkward and fell flat.

Because it's only acceptable for Trump and the alt-right to make mean-spirited, unfunny jokes.

I saw a snippet and the delivery was horrible and the material flat.  This event is so stupid anyway I'm not surprised.  I think they should stop doing these dinners.  The audience is full of snowflakes and stiff political operatives.  They can't take a joke when its even a good one.

Also in comedy there's technically nothing that's "going too far".  Joan Rivers made a 50-year career out of going too far.

The problem with the Correspondents' Dinner isn't the dinner itself - it is the access journalism relationship that too much of the press pursues the other 364 days of the year.

Huckabee got the best press of anyone out of this unfortunate affair, with his pose under fire, so your schadenfreude might be a bit misplaced here.

If there was anything wrong with Michelle Wolf's comments at a comedy roast, then Trumpy and his flunkies saying even worse while holding the nation's highest office ought to provoke nationwide non-stop protests from citizens of all persuasions until he is removed from office. Since such protests are not ongoing and he is still in office, ipso facto, her routine was fine and well within the standards of our society, and some people just don't like what she said or who she targeted. Tough.

Where was there anything mean about what she said? It was pretty much standard comedy. If Laura Ingraham or Rush Limbaugh got on the stage and said "Obama is a poopy head" conservatives would have been calling it hilarious.

Just watched the routine after hearing people drone on endlessly about it all day. I think it was right and good that she called out SHS, Conway, etc. as liars. From day one, the Trump administration has made a habit out of saying things that are objectively untrue. That's not normal political spin, that's flat-out deception. We need to make that differentiation, and it has to be clear. This is not acceptable behavior for a government.

Since comedy is subjective, we can argue about whether or not Wolf's approach was funny, but I didn't find anything inaccurate with the intention or message behind her remarks.

The media invites a comedian to come roast them, they get roasted, and then they all compete to show that their the ones with the most integrity by saying the comedian they hired was mean spirited.

Nothing Michelle Wolf said was mean. Was she particularly funny? No, she’s not my taste. 8/10 of her jokes usually fell flat. Hassan Minhaj was waaaaay funnier. But the WHCA is the one who hired her to do exactly what she did. They knew what they were getting themselves into.

But I guess for them only white privileged assholes like SHS have feelings.

Overall, it was pretty tasteless and just about as crude as I expected it to be. I thought the abortion remark she made was simply disgusting...

"Don’t knock it ‘til you try it — and when you do try it, really knock it. You know, you’ve got to get that baby out of there."

I think whether you're pro-life or pro-choice, we can all agree that abortion is not something to celebrate as good, in and of itself. Not saying she shouldn't have been allowed to say it, just saying that it's sad that this is what passes for humor.

Nobody was really funny, just a sign of how badly the daily show has dropped off in the past couple years.

The Daily Show stopped being good when Jon left. Which I don't think is completely attributable to Trevor Noah. Most of the correspondents and writing staff left at the same time and it just didn't have the same biting humor that it did before.

🔥🔥🔥 take alert: Wyatt Cenac is the most talented Daily Show alum since Steven Colbert (yes, including John Oliver, and Sam Bee).

I thought it was wonderful. Her (intentionally) awkward delivery was part of what made it funny, it seemed more genuine. Sure it certainly didn't comply with "when they go low we go high" but it was acceptable and not any worse than what Sanders does to reporters literally every day.

It wasn't funny but it made the Hulkabeast squirm so kudos!

Huckabee got the best press of anyone out of this unfortunate affair, with his pose under fire, so your schadenfreude might be a bit misplaced here.

Isn't she polling, like, 18 points ahead of Evans? Even though most are still undecided, a ton (as in like 70% of undecideds) would have to swing to Evans for her to even narrowly win, and with the kind of massive, well funded, well run campaign juggernaut that Abrams is running (and the fact that she's reaching out to those who haven't been reached out to, ever) I find that extremely unlikely.

She gave a delivery style like Wendy Liebman which is intentionally awkward. It's very clear that a lot of people don't understand comedy and are being overly sensitive. With that said when Trump was called out for inciting someone to shoot Hillary Clinton was dismissed as a joke, the Access Hollywood tape was a joke, the making fun of a disable reporter was a joke, etc. Either some people love making excuses or they have a dark sense of humor.

I watched the Michelle Wolf thing unfortunately.

It was neither funny nor offensive.

I thought, based on the Republican reaction, that it would include some disparaging comments about Huckabee's appearance. It didn't.

It was just 2 minutes of "I am liberal, Sarah Huckabee Sanders is not liberal, she is a lair".

If conservatives had just ignored this, Wolf would have just vanished into obscurity because she's not very funny.

Or maybe conservatives are playing 5D chess. Maybe they are getting one over on Democrats. By making Wolf a celebrity, they are going to force liberals to patronize this woman and pretend she is funny for the next 7 years at least.

This, indeed, was the worst part of the presentation.  Ragging on Trump, or even on his Press Secretary, Sanders, is one thing; this comment is another.

Many years ago, Tex Antoine, a weather reporter in NYC with a known alcohol problem, made a comment on the air as to if rape were inevitible, sit back and enjoy it.  The outcry was immediate, and Antoine was deservedly fired.  I see little difference between his comment and this comedienne's comment.  Both of them joke about a traumatic event in a person's life.

This issue isn't going to keep me up at nights.  I expect such insensitivity from entertainers; they only get upset at comments about children when it's THEIR parenting brought into question.  But this comment does reflect Michelle Wolf's lack of regard for the humanity of children, and if she's made to feel uncomfortable by the public spotlight shining on this comment, so be it.

They created this monster and thrive off of Democrats hate-watching him on their network, he drags journalists through the mud on a daily basis and when someone dares call him on it they cry like babies. Their obsession with Trump and what he thinks of them is sick.

Yeah the whole ultra feminist, stereotypical frizzy-haired look combined with hateful leftist commentary isn't appealing. Always remember that people like her are insignificant. Men don't like them for dating prospects, the country rejects them politically (except run-down urban areas that vote blue no matter what) and their mean-spiritedness is more bark than bite.

I guess everyone who is really upset about Wolff's comments were also furious when Trump talked about grabbing women's private parts without their consent?

I'm assuming you hated him when the video came out of him saying he would be dating a 10 year old girl in a few years?

I'm betting you were also triggered when it came out that he screwed a porn star while his wife was in the hospital giving birth to his child?  Or when he was cheating on his wife with a Playboy model or two.

Honestly, the hypocrisy of the right is staggering.  I agree the abortion comment was cringeworthy.  But these events are the same every time, and this year was NO different than any other.  The star comedian of the evening pokes fun of the president and the administration and sometimes it's a little offensive--but it's always a joke.  A joke is 100% different than the above mentioned things Trump is on record as doing that you all were so forgiving of him for.

Also, she made fun of Democrats and the media...oh, and Paul Ryan (you guys don't like him, remember?).  That's the point of these events.  It's all jokery and fun on all sides; if you didn't find it funny, then you need to see someone about removing the giant dildo from your probably homophobic bottom cavern.  Or just don't watch it.  Stop being triggered over something that isn't at all serious, and instead focus on things that ARE serious--like the investigation into Russian collusion (even though you all want it stopped because you're unpatriotic) or global warming (even though you all think that's fake news despite science) or Michael Cohen, or Scott Pruitt, or that the DOJ removed a section about a free press from their manual, or any number of other things that are worth being triggered about.

Oh, and Michelle was hired for this job.  It's almost as if they don't properly vet the people they hire.....

In truth, if I made some of the comments Michelle Wolf made about people's wives, mothers, sisters, or daughters here, I wouldn't be surprised to find myself on the losing end of some "corporal punishment" by some of the aggrieved loved ones, requiring a short hospitalization.

That is a good point. Most people who commentate in a political sense have got some axe to grind with their opposite ideology.

Then they chalk up how good they are sounding confident and superior.

I can understand a mudfest in a campaign, and I don't begrudge either side "going negative".  If this is a "campaign" event, however, it begs the question of the objectivity of the Fourth Estate.

Reminds me of the recent ECHO scandal in Germany, where a controversial songtext by rappers led to the cancellation of the ECHO in future years:

http://www.dw.com/en/germany-scraps-echo-music-awards-after-anti-semitism-controversy/a-43528588

Quote
A firestorm of outrage erupted after the Echo's Hip-Hop/Urban prize was handed out earlier this month to the rap duo of Kollegah and Farid Bang, who in a song titled "0815" say their bodies are "more defined than Auschwitz prisoners."

The WHCD could follow suit (even though many jokes from Wolf were pretty funny).

It is funny how Republicans care so much about being nice and respectful when it means licking the boots of men with power but think blunt honesty is what's needed when trampling down private citizens who went through traumatic experiences. Yet another exhibit of how the modern GOP lacks any intellectual coherency or moral principle.

I thought the bit was solid, though not fantastic. The awkward delivery was obviously intentional and the fact that some of it fell flat is because the targets can't always take the jokes. The complaint that you can tell she really dislikes Trump or whatever is like yeah, who in their right mind wouldn't?

The WHCD remains a great American tradition. One of the things in which the US does still stand out as an example to most other countries, including most liberal democracies is the acceptance that those in power are expected to face derision and have to take it. It's a valuable thing to preserve true freedom of speech. As such, it is unsurprising that the Constitution-hating Republicans are so upset about it since dismantling Constitutional freedoms is one of their overarching ambitions. To quote their great leader - "some people will say 'freedom of speech', 'freedom of speech'. Those are stupid people."

I think whether you're pro-life or pro-choice, we can all agree that abortion is not something to celebrate as good, in and of itself. Not saying she shouldn't have been allowed to say it, just saying that it's sad that this is what passes for humor.

I don't know, maybe you were so disgusted you missed the second half of this joke, otherwise you clearly missed the complications in her routine. She was not just telling a collection of ad-libbed jokes as some slow on the uptake people here have suggested.  To me, this was the best part of her routine, not for this line you've quoted here, which is tasteless, but because it was a set up.  I was like you, initially thinking to myself "oh dear, has she finally gone over the edge?"

But, she soon made it clear that joke was meant to be unfunny and in poor taste when she quickly followed up by saying (this isn't her exact line but it's very close) "A lot of groans.  Much of the audience here is clearly anti abortion...except when they ask their mistresses to have one."  (And the aside: "different standards for different times.")

She laid the trap for them, and they fell in it.  That's about as brilliant as a comedian can get.
