Quote
Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia (AP) -- Malaysia's new government said it will abolish the death penalty for all crimes and halt all pending executions, a rare move against capital punishment in Asia that human rights groups hailed Thursday as a major advance.

More than 1,200 people are on death row in Malaysia, which mandates hanging as punishment for a wide range of crimes including murder, drug trafficking, treason, kidnapping and acts of terror.

Law Minister Liew Vui Keong announced Wednesday that the Cabinet had agreed to abolish the death penalty and that amendments to laws with capital punishment were expected to be presented when Parliament resumes Monday, local media reported. Liew couldn't be reached for immediate comment.

Good.

And the US falls further and further behind ... in the end they will end up in a group with Islamo-Fascist and/or dictatorial regimes.

I’m pretty neutral on this. Good for Malaysia if that’s what they want to do. The USA doesn’t have to be Europe, even if we could learn from them on a few things.

This really destroys the main argument of death penalty opponents which is "the US should be exactly like Europe."

Self-preservation for the ruling class who are starting to feel they might face justice one day. (either real justice or kangaroo justice)

Uhhh... The BN/UMNO lost in May. This is PH, and even though they are led by Mahatir he (face the fact) probably doesn't have long for this world even if he wants to cling to power. If the election promises are true then Anwar will be PM "soon" and his whole message is Reformasi and the end to the institutions that allowed UMNO to establish competitive authoritarianism in the first place. Capital punishment is part that - arrest political opponents on trumped up changes and then this becomes a threat to trade for silence.
