Quote
Angela Merkel said she would stand down as leader of Germany’s ruling Christian Democratic Union after 18 years in charge, heralding the end of a political era in Europe’s most powerful nation.

Ms Merkel also said she would not seek another term as chancellor when her term ends in 2021, and would seek no further political office.

“I have the strong sense that it’s time to open a new chapter,” Ms Merkel said at a press conference in Berlin.

The decision was announced after a disastrous showing by her CDU in elections in the western German state of Hesse, where the party barely managed to cling to power after its share of the vote fell by 11 percentage points.

Praise kek!

German Christian Democrats looooove their leaders... until they don't.

I've never been a big fan of Merkel, but I respect her decision. However, I doubt the Merkel chancellorship lasts to 2021. Maybe a year, but not more. Doesn't mean there will be a new federal election before this term is up, though.

Wish she would step down now, as she has done a terrible job the past 6 years.

The 2006-2012 Merkel was far better and I dont know what happened which pushed her pretty far to the left.

Schroeder tried to hang on as Chancellor after stepping down as SDP leader, but it didn't took long.

Interestingly, Helmut Schmidt never was his party's leader, and yet served for eight years.

Good riddance!

Unfortunately I think her successor will be just as bad as her...

Not sure if I should be happy that she leaves (she was used quite often as a scapegoat by the left here) or sad because her replacement will probably be worse.

Good to see her dismantled and that she calls it quits.

It was long overdue after her immigrant failure.

For the first 75% of her governing she was mostly ok though.
