Title: Japan to resume commercial whaling

Quote
Japan says it is to restart commercial whaling in July in a move that is likely to draw international criticism.

It said it would withdraw from the International Whaling Commission (IWC), the body tasked with whale conservation.

Commercial whaling was banned by the IWC in 1986 after some species were driven almost to extinction.

Officials in Japan, an IWC member since 1951, say eating whales is part of the country's culture.

Good. The Japanese should be allowed to mantain their centuries old tradition.

Japan and other whaling nations only agreed to a temporary halt until sustainable quotas could be developed, but then other IWC nations tried to make temporary into permanent despite the fact that whale numbers have rebounded considerably and some species are not at all endangered. The only surprise here is that Japan waited this long.

Expected.

At least they won't be whaling in our waters anymore...

Like most emotional issues, there are good arguments for both sides.  The kind of whales the Japanese are after, there are plenty of them.  On the other hand, the "culture" reason to hunt whales is kind of stupid since they're doing it from giant factory "mother" ships, I'm sure that's not how great grand pa did it.

Not to mention nobody in Japan really even eats whales anymore.

Norway and Iceland already do it. (but it's okay because they're white liberals) Japan did it too, under the guise of "scientific hunts".

They weren't whaling in your waters to begin with.  They were whaling in Antarctic waters and Antarctica is terra nullius and owned by no country despite fanciful claims to contrary by some nations.  At most Argentina and Chile might have a claim since they had people born there, but their parents weren't really settlers so I wouldn't consider their claims valid either.

I can't comprehend how a civilized nation can commercially kill intelligent sea creatures.

What's the actual point of whaling for them? Do the whales they fish actually have economic value?

I mean there has to be a reason they take international flak from this besides just "it's traditional", which is basically saying "we do it for fun".

Why limit it to sea creatures?  Is it because bacon tastes so good?

The rest of us are hypocrites to give the Japanese (and the Norse and Icelandicks) sh**t for this while we allow the fishing of bluefin tuna (closer to extinction than the minke whale) and veal, while eating bacon and ham by the ton.

Generally I’d only support whaling for the less intelligent and more numerous species.  But I wont be eating it myself or encouraging others to.
