Title: Omaha sets record for Murder

link-local (https://www.wowt.com/content/news/Record-breaking-homicide-free-streak-in-Omaha-metro-503531011.html)
Quote
101 days without a homicide in the Omaha metro area.

A consecutive-day record for homicidal crime in the city.

<snip>

But lee is right. Things are changing.

Since 2015, homicide prevention has improved, but 2018 saw a significant drop in crime.

Eight fewer homicides than last year - the number of homicidal deaths in North Omaha were cut in half.

"I think it's been slowly getting there, but now it's really getting there for us,” said Lee. "It's a lot quieter around here. We can see that difference."

Lee and others attribute a stronger police presence and overall discipline as some factors for the improvement.

Just three years ago, there were 48 homicides in the metro area. This year, there’s been 22 - nine in the northeast precinct.

I do feel more fiscally murderous than socially murderous right now.

On a serious note... this is something very good, for very obvious reasons. Good work from everyone involved. I don't have much more to say.

So they say the worst crime is north or northeastern Omaha. Can you give further details for those of us looking at a map where the worst neighborhoods are deadman.

Edit. Is Carter lake bad, or a carved out island of habitability?

Holy $hit! It's part of Iowa?!?

22 murders is still a lot for a city of just 470.000 people.

Vienna had roughly the same amount of murders this year, but 1.9 million people - so the murder rate in Omaha is 4x higher.

Omaha has a Republican mayor and only a 4-3 Democratic city council.  It's one of the most conservative "cities" in the country.

And higher than NYC, with 278 murders for 8.6 million people.

There is a lot of gang crime in North Omaha.  Carter Lake is white trash (mobile home parks) that is starting to gentrify as "downtown" creeps closer.

101 days without a murder in a city of such size? Something must be going right!

Crime has been dropping ever since the 90s, due to a wide range of factors. This isn't said enough amid the continued scaremongering and 'tough on crime' freakout(just spouting 'tough on crime' without actually addressing the causes of crime is a sign of weakness, not strength, btw).

It's widely known that the murder rate everywhere in the U.S. is much higher than in pretty much every other developed country.

Mind = blown. Did Jordan Peterson teach you that?

Now for a fun question: what’s the cause of criminality? Hint: it’s rarely “moral failing.”

22 murders in the metro which is over 1,000,000. Not just the city limits. Unless I misread?

I'm not sure about that ... there are conflicting reports.

It could also be that all 22 murders happened in the city of Omaha, but no additional murders in the other areas belonging to the Omaha metro ...

22 murders is still a lot for a city of just 470.000 people.

Vienna had roughly the same amount of murders this year, but 1.9 million people - so the murder rate in Omaha is 4x higher.

The US homicide rate is ten times higher than that of Austria and over one hundred times higher in major cities such as Detroit, Baltimore, and New Orleans. A large city here in which people can expect to be murdered only four times as often as they are in Vienna is unusually safe.

That's correct.

The reasons for this are also very obvious: The US has a lot of gangs, a huge amount of guns available to the public, a massive drug epidemic, a much higher share of poor people, virtually no social safety net for poor people, veterans on the streets in poor conditions etc. etc.

In the media here, Vienna with its 2 million people is always referred to as the "murder capital" - but even there murders only range between 10 and 20 each year, for a murder rate between 0.5-1 per 100.000 people.

In the US the rate is 4-5 per 100.000 people. Vienna, if it were a US state, would have the lowest murder rate among the 50 US states + DC ... :P
