Title: Would it bother you if the President was...(insert religious affiliation)
Post by: TDAS04 on January 11, 2019, 03:42:47 PM
Voted NOTA.  The President's religion shouldn't matter, as long as he/she doesn't govern according to his/her beliefs.

If I had to pick one to be concerned about it, it would be the evangelical, since I'm a gay, pro-feminist, social liberal.  Yes, I'd be more concerned about an evangelical POTUS than a Muslim POTUS, as no Muslim would get anywhere in the US politically by supporting Sharia Law.

None as long as it does not interfere with others' belief or religion (normal, likes freedom.)

I would ideally like the president to be a Christian and to truly embrace his or her faith in every decision that the president has to make, but I wouldn't actively oppose a president who was Jewish or Muslim (especially since they at least believe in parts of the Bible) but supported the values Christians care about in office.

I would be strongly opposed to an explicitly and outwardly atheist President. Aside from that I don't care what religion they are.

wouldn't bother me exactly for the President to be an atheist, but I always think of the stress of having a position like that without someone to pray to.

None, as long as they respect the constitutional right to freedom of religion and separation of church and state it's all gucci.

I'm simply not comfortable with the leader of the free world being someone that believes in nothing higher than themselves. Religion provides essential moral grounding to put things in perspective. Outside of positions like the Presidency I wouldn't care, but when you are at the very top, with no civil authority more powerful than you, it does matter.

These kind of statements need to go and crawl in a pit and never return. Barely any American muslims would want this. If I was in leadership, my religion would have no influence on my policy. That's personal. Hate me because of my policy and immaturity and idiocy, not because of my religion, of which I would never use to oppress or harm anyone.

I'll never cast my vote for an Evangelical Christian under any capacity. No other group has done more damage to the environment and safety of this world than those bible-thumping hypocrites who want to unleash amajgeddon in the name of the sky dandy.

So you would've voted Republican if you lived in MI-11?

The only religion that I would categorically refuse to vote for under any circumstances would be a Scientologist

Would you vote for a Jimmy Carter-style Evangelical?

I would prefer my president to have at least some form of religious belief.

Sure, but they don't exist in electoral politics anymore. The Evangelical brand is polluted with con men that I don't a path where they could reside in the climate today.

Settle down.  There was nothing anti-Muslim about that statement.  (Though I understand why someone could interpret it as anti-evangelical).  I clearly stated a Muslim president would be fine, as any Muslim elected POTUS would not govern based on religion.  I appreciate that Muslim-Americans are well-educated and assimilated, and many are supportive of such issues as gay marriage.  The Muslim community in this country tends to understand that this country is supposed to respect diversity.

A Pence-style evangelical POTUS, on the other hand, would be a huge threat to social liberty, and not something to be desired by anyone concerned about women's rights, gay rights, or human rights in general.  And evangelical President, unlike a Muslim one, could easily be under the illusion that he speaks for a "moral majority", and has some divine obligation to govern as such.
