Northern Ireland should remain part of the UK.

Catholics to receive an Irish passport, protestants to keep their British passports. Northern Ireland to become a neutral territory, Irish and British at the same time.

Heck, I know it's far-fetched, but the world lives through compromises.

Thats unworkable.

I know it is, hence the term 'far-fetched'. ;) I'm a bit of a dreamer I guess.

I can give a complete ranking again. ;)

1) Dual Sovereignty
2) International Territory
3) Status Quo
4) Independence
5) Another partition
6) Eire annexs NI
7) Other
8) Bloodbath

Also check out the "Northern Ireland Politics Selector": http://www.selectsmart.com/FREE/select.php?client=northernireland

It says I´m a "liberal Unionist" (followed by "moderate nationalist" and "politically neutral").

Me too.
1 Liberal Unionist
2 neutral
3 for an Independent NI
4 Moderate Nationalist
5 Nationalist
6 Republican
7 Unionist
8 Hardcore Unionist

I figure Liberal Unionist is like the Alliance Party? Which would be more like non-Unionist Protestant? Because otherwise I think the test result is wrong.

One problem: Most of NI is hilly and/or mountainous...

Newton Emerson (www.portadownnews.com (http://www.portadownnews.com)) Is a liberal Unionist.

Looks more like a satirist to me.
And hilliness is not a problem for a good engineering team with a monstrous budget.

Down with the Alps! For a free view of the Meditteranean!
(Old Swiss and South German joke that gave me the idea)

He's a satirist (and a funny one as well. The headline after the Assembly elections was: "Voters choose Evil")... but he's a self described Liberal Unionist.

True... although most of County Antrim is volcanic rock...

Except 7 and 8 flipping (NOT flattering to me...) that was my exact result.

It's so very complicated. I think that maybe the only solution is independence for Northern Ireland. It's not what I want, nor is it what the Catholics want. Prods will not submit to Irish rule. Cathies will not submit to British rule. We must all make compromises.

Some rational responces so far... not what you usually get on NI debates (see the comments on www.sluggerotoole.com (http://www.sluggerotoole.com))... or soc.culture.irish... aaiiieeee!!!

Another question:

How much gerrymandering is there in this map?

The Belfast map sure looks odd. And I like the bit with Mid Antrim and Central Antrim.
Oh, and: The problem with NI Independence is that without proper guarantees to the Taigs (to use the appropriate slur) it'll mean Protestants dominating Catholics - as between 1929 and 1973, when NI had largescale autonomy.

The most gerrymandered constituancy was City of Londonderry... IMO

No... no I haven't... and I wouldn't want to either... Shankill is about 90% Protestant and Falls about 90% Catholic...

I would want to go to see the Peace Wall and the Murals. Better not wear my Rangers top to Falls though.

Wearing a Rangers top in the Falls isn't reeeeeeeally a good idea... actually going to both Shankill and Falls in the same day is something to brag about...

Thats another thing that annoys me! The stupidity displayed by some Celtic and Rangers fans both sides of the Irish Sea. They are GLASGOW....SCOTTISH teams- I wish people would stop hijacking it for religious means, and that goes to not only those from Northern Ireland, but from Scotland too. That said- congratulations Celtic on winning the title this year;) I'm local- I have an excuse!

It's funny...I always rooted for Celtic, but that's just b/c Henrik Larson plays there. ;)

Well, at this point I'm the only one voting for 'Another Partition'. To the maximum extent possible, chop them up again, since obviously it wasn't done quite right the last time around. Let the Republic of Ireland inherit the leftist nutcases of Sinn Fein (not that they really want them, but that's how it goes) and the United Kingdom can keep the right-wing Unionists. Damned if I know just what such a map would look like, but since neither the Protestants nor the Catholics will willingly live under the other's rule, apply the Israel/Palestine approach - separation.

And to those who said 'give it to Ireland'...result: instant Unionist uprising and guerrilla war - the mirror of what's been going on up to this point. That's not gonna work, folks...

Actually a Unionist uprising would be far worse... most Catholics in NI live out in the Sticks... same can't be said for Protestants.

Outside Belfast it would actually work just fine. If you look at a map of the 2001 election results you'll find that the 6 Constituencies bordering the Republic are 6 of the 7 to be won by Catholics. What to do about West Belfast is the big question...There would of course be Protestants included in the Republic as well, but the 1920s show that that's not really a problem. As long as they aren't Presbyterians.
