Title: Charlie Baker should be offered a prominent job in the next Dem administration
Post by: Heebie Jeebie on January 30, 2019, 09:44:45 PM
If a Democrat wins the presidency in 2020, she should offer Charlie Baker a prominent position in her administration, just to get him out of the governor's mansion.  There are no term limits in Massachusetts, so if Democrats want to win the governorship in that state they need to find some other way to create a vacancy.  What's more, Baker seems like a very capable administrator and would probably do a good job.

Thoughts on this?  Would Charlie Baker ever accept an offer like this?

Maybe as ambassador to somewhere, or something in Foreign Policy (maybe even UN Ambassador). But I can’t see why the Democrats would want to give away a domestic portfolio to a Republican when they’ve got such a larger domestic agenda the base wants to implement.

Well, Baker is moderate enough even on economy, to be an obstacle to most Democratic programs. In addition - a healthy dose of pragmatic moderate fiscal conservatism is even desirable for such Democratic administration. Otherwise it can spend a state into bancruptsy.

Maybe ambassador to China, or something, but nothing past that.

He isnt a threat to Democrats in MA, and we have incredibly large supermarjorities anyway.

If he (and likeminded people) does it - Republicans in Massachusetts may forget about winning any substantial offices...

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I don't think Massachusetts has gubernatorial term limits.

You're correct. Massachusetts does NOT have gubernatorial term limits.

Fun Fact: No Republican Governor of MA has served a full two terms, nor has been reelected for a 3rd term. Only 2 Democrats have served the full two terms; Michael Dukakis and Deval Patrick.

Baker would be a great Secretary of HHS or the Treasury.

I would like it very much, but not for the purpose of getting out of the governor's mansion. He'd make a great Treasury or Commerce Secretary. Or even HHS, though I'd like to see something bold on healthcare that finally covers everybody without blowing the deficit. Phil Scott would also be a good choice for a cabinet position or ambassadorship (an important one).

No thanks. This clown recently subverted the will of Massachusetts voters by using a backdoor method to establish more charter schools.

Oh well, in any case we have veto-proof majorities so whether he sticks around isn’t that big a deal tbh.  Certainly no need to offer him anything imo

I am not sure he is too interested in your offer, BTW)))))

Why would he bother to do that when he already is one?

He would probably decline. He's a loyal Republican and has no interest in leaving Boston.

Not since they extended the term to four years, at least. John Volpe was elected to a third term and served two full terms in the 1960s.

Would you rather have Baker as governor than Maura Healey?

If the next Democratic President appoints a Republican governor to anything, it makes the most strategic sense to appoint someone from a state without Democratic supermajorities.

Baker isn't really threatening Democratic policy in MA. Same with Hogan, IIRC.

It makes much more sense to, say, appoint Chris Sununu or Doug Ducey to ambassador of some minor country
