Title: 2019 NHL Playoffs
Post by: JGibson on April 08, 2019, 03:12:19 AM
With the 2019 NHL playoffs (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2019_Stanley_Cup_playoffs) having begun, who are you rooting for to win the Stanley Cup?

Some burning questions: Will the Washington Capitals repeat as Stanley Cup champions? Can the St. Louis Blues continue their miracle comeback season to win it all for the 1st time ever on the back of Jordan Binnington? Can the Tampa Bay Lightning win it all after winning everything in the regular season, or will they be knocked out early? Will the Vegas Golden Knights exact revenge to win it all? Will the Stanley Cup return to Canada should Calgary, Winnipeg, or Toronto win it? Find out as we get through the playoffs.

Rooting for Winnipeg, realistically it's probably Tampa.

How 'bout them Blues! They came back to win 2-1 to take a 1-0 series lead. #PlayGloria

Stars come and top the preds in Nashville in the first game, a much better team, very unexpected.

That was such a great game by the Leafs. Shut them down well in the third and did very well defensively (Zaitsev and Muzzin in particular were great tonight). Also, Marner <3. Still just one game, but a great start.

Leafs and Columbus have both won game 1, maybe this will be the year of the upset.

Top Choices:
Boston Bruins
Followed by New York Islanders

Would not root for:
Tampa Bay Lightning
Washington Capitals
Pittsburgh Penguins

Who I think will win, sadly either Washington or Tampa Bay, whichever one wins the Eastern Conference

It was interesting to see the Leafs give us a lesson in how their strengths can actually be used to shut Boston down. We never really saw it last year, which kind of led to this impression that Toronto's style of play was a poor match for Boston. But on Thursday the Leafs made Boston look like an old, haggard team. Gives me some hope for the series, though Saturday's game was definitely frustrating.

Honestly, I disagree and think Dubas needs to take a backseat to Babcock, but to each their own. Sparks was Dubas’s fault, and I’d say that was a pretty bad debacle...

Just a question:
Is Tampa Bay, the team with the best regular season record to be swept in the first round of the playoffs, in NHL history

(Meaning has there been a team with more points than them, who was swept in the first round)

Yes, Tampa Bay, who won the President's Trophy (best regular season record/most points), was swept by Columbus, a wild card team

Yes, it's the first time the President's Trophy winner has been swept in the first round and only the 3rd time the President's Trophy winner has been swept period (the other teams were swept in the Stanley Cup Finals).

The Blackhawks had the best record in the Campbell Conference in the 92-93 season, but didn't win the President's Trophy, and got swept by the Blues in the first round.  I was at the 4th game, 60 feet or so behind Belfour when the Blues won it in OT.

What a comeback by the Blues! Going into the 3rd, they were down 2-0 and came back to win it, with Jaden Schwartz's goal with 15 or so seconds left being the difference maker.

They can clinch a ticket to the 2nd round on Saturday night at Enterprise.

The Sharks have completed the comeback in game 7, as they were down 3-0 to take a 4-3 lead, only for Vegas to tie it up 4-4 to force OT, and complete the caper as they scored in OT to win 5-4 and eliminate the Golden Knights in Game 7.

Cody Eakin's 5 minute major + game misconduct was the game and series' turning point.

A penalty like that shouldn't be called in the waning minutes of a game 7 unless it's really egregious. Pavelski clearly tripped backwards as he was pushed into Stastny.  That push "cross-check" happens often in face-offs. At worst it should've been a standard 2 min minor.

RIGGED!

Yeah this game sucked, total waste of time and resources, painful to watch. I can see the end of the road for Dallas here. Gg

Further (hella bias) “thoughts”

refs sucked but that was only like 10% of it the rest was the Stars fault

Dallas played mediocre, Blues played a solid good game but not great

Bishop had yet another sh!tty game getting cheesed from the inner blue line corners

Blues ran a much better interference on the previously far superior stars puck passings

Dallas is sorely missing out on the big defensive bodies on its team but not currently playing  such as Mark Methot who has been out all season and is probably never coming back, Stephen Johns also out all season, maybe coming back next year, and Oleksiak who has been gone for the past few games and on a day by day return watch, hopefully soon. Only Esa and Roman have some size left in our defense and Roman is older and not quick, Klingberg and Fedun are just getting bodied without enough backup, Klingberg is a stick and Fedun is just not big or that good for nhl hockey. Only defenseman thriving on the stars rn is Miro (duh).

Man, does the NHL have the best professional postseason or what! Even with just one of the eight teams I casually (very casually) cheer for in the quarterfinal stage, this is just so much fun. At risk of sounding like the those SUPER annoying people who only show up for March Madness with full confidence after not watching a game in 11 months, I assure you I do at least watch my Rangers for most of the year. Thank you all for being more than casual fans the rest of the year so we can all experience such a pure and energized postseason.

The Dallas-St. Louis game last night was an unbelievable roller coaster of momentum shifts and turns - the shorthanded goal was unreal, only for the Stars to go south as they always have and give it right back. And even with three goals against, Binnington felt like a brick wall in the crease that was not going to let Dallas beat him. He was like a 160 pound bowling pin trying to be knocked down by the 6 pound training ball. Not a chance!

And tonight's game between Columbus and Boston was really what drove me to post that this is some of the best hockey I have seen in a couple years, which comes with the territory of living in New York. Columbus' pure passing and consistent opportunity-creation for the duration of the game was artful. Where was a Power Play like the one that scored the second goal when Tortorella was leading the Rangers! Rask did everything he could, but the Blue Jacket energy was unmatched. Boston also had flashes of brilliance with some magnificent set-ups ricocheted off Bobrovsky, but they weren't able to convert and the strategy did not create nearly as many opportunities.

And I'd hate to forget to commend Columbus' defensive wizardry when they were at full strength in the defensive zone which was extraordinarily helpful in minimizing the Boston opportunities. That is a Tort staple I did not forget.

Great job to all participants!

San Jose is my favourite team left. Dallas is tolerable, has beloved Zucc and would give the Rangers a pick. The Jackets are a lovable underdog with a deserving coach. And the Isles are the only division rival I could consider cheering on. Definitely a lot of reasons to keep on watching!

Thank you James Creighton for creating this great sport. Thank you Gary Bettman for revitalizing the game and the whole playoff experience. Thank you players for fighting for a fair wage on the ice and being exemplary citizens off of it. And thank you to the true fans from Nashville to Vegas (Las Vegas) to Columbus for coming to the games, cheering your hearts out and welcoming this funny foreign ice sport with open arms. Let's go! I'll let you so-called experts get back to your stats and numbers. Happy everything forever!

Holy sh!t Binnington is 6 foot 2 and 160 pounds?! I though Klingberg was a stick lol. That's like ultra twig skinny! He is still very good though, but Miro should have been a Calder finalist, not Binnington. This is a must win game 4 for Dallas momentum wise, Miro still has my faith, we were at the game on monday and waited in one of the crowded fanshops for quite a while to get a Miro jersey.

Wtf was that final minute of Stars vs Blues game 4 of the 2nd period? Perron just whacks Bishop in the back and nothing? My dad was screaming someone should beat the sh!t out of Perron, he’s not that big, and I said forget that sh!tbag, flipping board one of these refs a la Roenick style. This crew of refs has sucked the past few games. Sh!tbags like Perron are expected to be that way, but not the refs. Also lol at Binnington shoving Benn, Binningtom better hope he would have backup in the fight otherwise that twig would get snapped by most anyone on the stars roster.

Prediction for Finals: Carolina over San Jose (want San Jose)

I'm rooting for Toronto to win it in 2020 though. Toronto has not won since May 2, 1967 and is the only Original Six team not to win the Cup in the expansion era (Fall 1967-present).

8. Blues
9. Stars

Sunday's a do-or-die game for the Blues. This is a familiar scenario for my club these past few seasons, like having a 2-0/2-1 series lead and lose it to be down 3-2.

I hope the Blues at least force Game 7 (and hopefully win that game too), because I am personally sick and tired of the Blues bowing out in the 1st or 2nd round just about every time we make the playoffs! We're long overdue for a Stanley Cup!

That was a much-needed 4-1 victory for my Blues to set up a win or go home game for both teams Tuesday night. Hopefully we continue our quest for the Cup past Tuesday night.

The winner of Game 7 gets the San Jose-Colorado series winner, while the loser goes home.

Anything can happened in game 7, but if I had to plant my wild guess, I would bet on St Louis. Bishop played super well in the regular season, and he got us here, but his post season performance has taken a dive for the worse. Our top one line of Benn, Seguin, and Radulov (thought not as much Radulov), has also not performed nearly as well as their regular season playing. Also, we are missing a lot of big muscle, letting St Louis phyiscally control the game. Hanzal, Methot, Johns, and Oleksiak all gone, that really hurts. Those are big dudes that could have been a series changer, guess we will never know. Rn the true Stars are the new kids, especially the super talented 2nd line, where even older Spezza is holding down his own, and preventing an otherwise complete faceoff blowout (even though it is pretty bad as is rn). This especially sucks since game 7 is there, and I will have to watch the second most obnoxious crowd in the NHL (just behind Nashville) jeer and party if my guess is right. Oh well, I guess as a democrat I am used to watching my team lose to an obnoxious and dirty coalition on the other end, so at least I am prepared, sigh.

yes, Boston is soft, the Blues are hard.  The Blues are going to punish them, just like they did SJ.  History owes the Blues.  The last time the Blues were in the finals, they got swept by the Bruins.  In this playoffs, the Isle swept Pit, Carolina swept the Isle and then Boston swept Carolina.  So now it's Boston's turn.  Poetic justice.  Karma.  Momentum.  Everything is pointing towards the Blues.

The Blues choked away a 2-0 lead, lose the game 4-2 to allow Boston to take the series 1-0. Everything after Tarasenko's goal that got us a 2-0 lead was bad for the Blues.

What an awesome game for the Bruins. They were a bit rusty in the start because they had not played in forever, but they caught fire and pulled Binnington's pants down, just wish they got that empty netter in the final twenty something seconds. If they were not rusty, their already plenty adequate 4-2 beating of the blues would have been 5-2 or 6-2 given so many so close pipe shots. Blues still playing nasty but at least refs are finally clamping down on them, but when you have a sh!thole city can you really expect the team to not be dirty players? lol

They started playing their old Bloozer way of stupid cheap shots and penalties. That identity has been mostly gone on games they won, the Ducks are similar.  It's why I dislike those teams.  If the Blues break free of that nonsense, they can become likable and win the Cup.

Tonight, there's three simple tasks for the Blues to do: Get back to St. Louis with the series tied 1-1, stop with the stupid penalties and turnovers, and no more blowing 2-0 leads.

What a big win for the Blues that was. We're headed back to St. Louis even at 1-1, thanks to Carl Gunnarsson's OT game-winner. 3 more Glorias, and that Cup's going to St. Louis!!!

Two wrongs never makes a right, never said that, but Nordstrom is also substantially smaller haha and he did not obviously raise his shoulder blade to aim for the head like Sundqvist did. No puck, severe boarding, and Sundqvist is a dirty goon, deserved it. St Louis is obviously a great team, but they are filthy as hell, and deserved that.

The Blues lose 7-2 to the Bruins in Game 3 to go down in the series 2-1, thanks to the Bruins' PP scoring 4 of the goals. This game was a damn embarrassment in front of our home crowd. The good news is that we finally scored on the power play.

This team had better wake the hell up in Game 4 if we want any chance at winning the Stanley Cup!!!! 😡🤬😡🤬🖕🏼

The Blues are two Glorias away from winning the Stanley Cup, as they defeated the Bruins 4-2 to even the series 2-2 and ensure a 6th game happens on Sunday Night.

bagel23's correct regarding the Bruins future without Zdeno Chára, which could happen as soon as this offseason or within the next year or two.

Bruins spoil the Blues' 1st ever #StanleyCup trophy hoisting chance , as they buttwhooped the Note 5-1 to even the series 3-3. 🤬😡😡🤬

4 of the 5 Bruins goals came in the 3rd.  The game was close until we got to the disastrous 3rd period, when Brandon Carlo scored a goal off a lucky bounce to extend their lead to 2 goals.

The only good thing about this game is that at least we scored a goal, coming via video review.

On Wednesday night, the Blues and Bruins will play a winner take all Game 7 in Boston to determine which team will take home Lord Stanley. If the Blues want to win the Cup, we need to play way better than this debacle of a game (esp. the 1st 5-on-3 and the 3rd period) and stay out of the goddamn penalty box!!!!!

Lol watching stuff like this to feel a little better haha, if Chara did not have that broken jaw he would have taken Maroon to the woodchipper for like the third or fourth time. Then again a person who is even a small guy at 5'10 5'11 but knows where to land his skate properly could take that goon out for a while. Hopefully a cheapshotter pulls a stunt like this next year if they get close to the cup again. He's a formidable opponent and a big dude who can only be countered by a handful of people in the league, and it would be very beneficial to take him out of a playoff series.

Since the beginning of May, this town that sees red in the summer has been all about the Blues. And the stories extend beyond the hockey team.

Take the blue lobster for instance.

The owner of Arnold’s Lobster and Clam Bar on Cape Cod decided to gift a unique blue lobster to the new St. Louis Aquarium currently under construction inside Union Station.

On Friday, that lobster landed in its new Midwest home.

The blue lobster is 11 inches long and weighs about 1.5 pounds. The lobster is estimated to be about 7 years old. They can live up to 100.

<snip>

As a thank you to the Boston restaurant, the St. Louis Aquarium sent 150 cups of blueberry Ted Drewes Frozen Custard.
