Title: Can Virginia Democrats still appeal to the Mark Warner NASCAR Dad 2001 coalition
Post by: bronz4141 on April 13, 2019, 12:52:01 pm
Can they still appeal to the Warner-Mudcat Sanders coalition in Southwest Virginia or are those days over?

No, and they don't need to anyway.

Depends on who's prez; Tim Ryan and Beto types can appeal to Warner crowd.

I don't see this at all.

Beto is the type of candidate who does well in Sunbelt suburbs. He wouldn't play well in rural Appalachia.

Why does OP consistently ask the dumbest, most rhetorical questions imaginable?

Not for the time being. There is a strong rural-urban divide in Virginia, where rural/exurban areas heavily trend GOP and suburban/urban areas heaving trend Dem.

NASCAR sucks.  Even NASCAR Dads can agree with that.

If we are talking about 2006, then the answer is no, as Jim Webb ran well behind Warner in all parts of rural VA and only won thanks to running ahead of Warner in NOVA

Any Dem can win VA, the state has been secularized by Obama winning it twice. The state is a NASCAR state, but its a Fed govt state. Since Trump, inconvenienced Fed workers in shutdown, he wont win it

An actually interesting question would be why Webb underperformed Warner in rural areas, considering he seemed like more of a "good 'ol boy" than Warner.

Warner at the time was viewed as more conservative than Webb

I doubt that was the case.  2001 seemed pretty economic driven and Warner made an appeal to those left behind by VA metro growth and it resonated (not that he or anyone could substantially  improve rural VA).  2006 seemed pretty macacca driven which helped Webb in more diverse areas.

That coalition is long gone. Warner’s victory map next year is going to look a lot like Kaine’s from 2018. In fact I could see Warner doing even worse than Kaine in SWVA since Trump will be on top of the ballot. The days of Dems cracking even 40% in those counties are behind us.

However, at the same time I could see Warner getting record numbers in NOVA, the Greater Richmond Area and Hampton Roads. We’re going to start seeing some rigid D East v. R West divides in VA soon, especially on the congressional level.
