It's like every former President in Latin America is being arrested for something nowadays.

Except, you know, Álvaro Uribe, who is free tweeting about how massacres are justified and MI6 is spying on him.

WTH just happened ? Does anybody know why Garcia offed himself ?

He was involved in the Odebrecht scandal, and he would have not gotten off lightly in either the eyes of public opinion or the courts.

That makes the last three Presidents of Peru involved in that. Wow.

3 consecutive former Peruvian Presidents in a row involved in this big scandal ? YIKES.

I've heard that they're going to hold a big funeral for Garcia later next week if I heard correctly.

So the only ones not involved are Fujimori and Bermudez? That's hillarious.

Of course. After all he's a hero of the war on terror and for years he defended the last bastion of freedom in South America, drowning under the socialist wave.

List of Heads of State in Latin America engulfed in the massive Odebrecht Scandal:

1.) Former Peruvian Presidents Alejandro Toledo, Alan Garcia (deceased), Ollanta Humala & Pedro Pablo Kuczynski (who resigned from office last year).

2.) Former Argentine President Cristina Fernandez de Kirchner

3.) Former Brazilian Presidents Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva, Dilma Rousseff & Michel Temer

4.) Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro

5.) Former Mexican President Enrique Pena Nieto (he's not arrested yet).

Garcia's accusations were very weak. He got U$120k from a lecture he made in Sao Paulo, he paid all taxes.

Apparently Toledo is too and Peru is seeking his extradition from the US, so that means the last four.

And his predecessor Alberto Fujimori was convicted of crimes against humanity I believe. It seems like all Peruvian presidents have done something pretty bad while in office.

I've heard that Garcia might get a grand State funeral. Is that true ?

Fujimori's daughter was also ensnared in the scandal iirc: her party now seems to be dead.

Is it just me or former left-wing leaders in the region are more likely to get a harsh legal treatment than the ones from the right?

He was acting really weirdly when he was in california last month. Pity that he went out like this.

Certainly true in Brazil, although I don’t think García could be considered to be particularly left-wing.

Big question is whether the current Peruvian President will be next to get engulfed in corruption scandals ?

My understanding is that he is probably too much of a non-entity to have even been targeted. Apparently he was simultaneously Ambassador to Canada whilst being Vice President (I haven't the faintest idea how that would have worked), so he'd have well insulated from scandal in any case.

What I gathered from a quick reading is that the only reason of existence of the Vice President of Peru is to take over the duty of President when the latter is incapacitated, dead, etc. And they have 2 Vice presidents, so one of them being ambassador to wherever shouldn't be a problem I guess.

He actually referred to himself in the third person in his own damn suicide note, which is incredible him.
