Nashville would be such a nice place if growing up around there hadn't ruined it for me.

Top 5:
- Seattle
- DC
- Denver
- San Francisco
- Boston

Bottom 5:
- Birmingham
- Oklahoma City
- Cincinnati
- St. Louis
- Indianapolis

The only one of my bottom five that I've been to is Cincinnati, which probably explains why they're on that list - except for Cincinnati.

Jacobin has a very strong list, so his is heavily leveraged. The top 10 are all serious contenders for my life. The next 5-10 are places I like but would be unlikely to live in. Decidedly mixed on 21-26ish until I really visit before a steady drop-off.

01. Philadelphia, PA
02. Chicago, IL
03. Boston, MA
04. Baltimore, MD
05. New York, NY - New York could easily bump to 4 on job opportunity, but it is increasingly less appealing and Baltimore has a slightly greater charm and frankly cooler opportunities just a drive away.
06. Richmond, VA - One of the most underrated cities in America
07. Atlanta, GA - Atlanta is probably not a top 25 metro, but it does present unique job opportunities that I would like to be involved with. More of a forced pipe dream.
08. San Antonio, TX
09. Washington, DC
10. San Diego, CA - I have severe issues in sub-40 degree weather, so this had to make an appearance at some point for health reasons. Self-medication living.

11. Providence, RI
12. Nashville, TN
13. Austin, TX
14. Las Vegas, NV
15. Louisville, KY
16. Minneapolis, MN
17. Raleigh, NC
18. Salt Lake City, UT
19. St. Louis, MO - slightly edges Detroit on cultural landmarks. I would like to move both up three spots, but I am more intrigued by the Raleigh job market and Utah cultural stability.
20. Detroit, MI

21. Virginia Beach, VA - as a non-driver, I would not last long, but family is family and the historic neighboring counties are good
22. Charlotte, NC
23. New Orleans, LA - I hear nothing but negatives...
24. Milwaukee, WI
25. Cincinnati, OH
26. Tampa, FL - I keep hearing people rave about the culture. Skeptical but my opinion is getting warped!

27. Columbus, OH
28. Denver, CO
29. Dallas, TX
30. Cleveland, OH - OK, so maybe I'm just eager to keep them in front of LA to 'own' LeBron. Arguably flip them and drop both a spot or two.
31. Los Angeles, CA
32. Hartford, CT
33. Seattle, WA
34. Houston, TX
35. Portland, OR
36. Kansas City, MO - Sorry JA, but I could not believe how desolate the city itself is. Kansas is great so maybe a bit low, but it's hard to wrap my mind around this mirage of an anchor.
37. Buffalo, NY
38. Pittsburgh, PA
39. San Francisco, CA
40. Sacramento, CA
41. Birmingham, AL
42. San Jose, CA
43. Phoenix, AZ
44. Jacksonville, FL

36. Kansas City, MO - Sorry JA, but I could not believe how desolate the city itself is. Kansas is great so maybe a bit low, but it's hard to wrap my mind around this mirage of an anchor.

Kansas City certainly isn't for everyone. It's not a particularly unique city, there are no remarkable landmarks, and any sense of "hipness" is only beginning to develop as the city tries to lure people from Denver who're seeking a lower COL. The Power and Light District is being renovated and improved; same with the Plaza. Both are the main urban attractions in terms of shopping and such. We do have some good sports teams, there are some nice parks and public gardens, and the suburbs are very cheap and decent (also our traffic is nothing compared to similarly sized cities). The job market is very strong on the Kansas side (OP is a magnet for corporations) and, according to a recent study I saw, KC has one of the nation's highest growth rates for white collar jobs. It's a good city if you're looking to settle down, buy a house, and start a family or are just a homebody who wants to live cheaply; otherwise, I'd suggest looking elsewhere.

I don't plan on making KC my permanent home, but it's a good spot for me at this time and I appreciate the opportunities it has provided me.

As a hater of rain and hippies, I can strongly attest Portland is a top 10 metro area in the USA, and the best under 3 million people (possibly excluding Honolulu).

I live here and its pretty great: People are super nice, the weather is not all that bad(It doenst snow much here or get super hot like the South and doesnt rain as much as people think) , is relatively inexpensive ,  has many natural attractions close by(the beach and the mountains are an hour away, the Gorge is half an hour away, and has many great hiking sports, and was recently ranked the best food city in America(https://www.oregonlive.com/dining/2015/12/portland_named_no_1_food_city.html_ )

While I may be biased due to personal reasons , I like the city for many other reasons too and if you look at my number two choice you will see that it is another North Western City

Bottom 5

5. Tampa
4. Orlando
3. Jacksonville
2. Miami
1. Phoenix

Why yes, it's all mostly Florida. I can stomach a little desert if it means staying out of Florida...though even Phoenix is a bit too far in that regard.

Top 5...That's too hard, good with anything that isn't a desert, overly suburban, or Florida.
