Title: Year of the (dead) Pig Post by: Ban my account ffs! on May 05, 2019, 11:22:36 AM https://www.scmp.com/economy/global-economy/article/3008729/chinas-african-swine-fever-outbreak-and-us-trade-war-combine
African swine fever has spread across China and has entered Mongolia and Vietnam. The disease kills nearly every pig it infects with ebola-like hemorrhages. It is projected that anywhere from 1/3 to 1/2 of China’s pig population will need to be culled or otherwise killed. This is on top of steep tariffs China put on American pork imports to punish pro-Trump farm states. China is the world’s 3rd highest pork consumer per capita making them the largest producer by a long shot. This is sending shockwaves through goobal meat markets as China greatly increases meat imports. It is suggested inflation may go as high as 5.7% in China. I think I’ll have a blt for lunch. Modestly, but there's not enough refrigerated shipping in the world to make a huge difference. Basically, the Chinese will have to eat more chicken.
