7.

Looking back, i'm grateful that the show got made since that's what caused my (and many others) own reading of ASOIAF. That being said, it's a book series that probably can't be made into a traditional tv show, and that became really apparent with the last two seasons.

Like the MCU, it's one of those things that sounds so good on paper, and it does have a lot of technical marvels too it...but I just can't get into it. Something about the sum of the parts vs the parts themselves gels all wrong [which also goes for the books btw].

I liked it and always will but when they ran out of boom material there was a serious drop off in quality. The funny thing is people like to say it was the last two seasons but as a book reader I can tell you it started in S5. In particular the Stannis downfall/Sansa torture storyline was atrocious and seriously hurt the show for me which I’ll always be annoyed about as the WF storyline in ADWD is one of my favorites

Voted option 2.

The first four seasons were, imho, the best work of fantasy to ever grace the screen, even beating out the LoTR trilogy. Problems set in for the next two seasons in large part because books 4-5 are harder to adapt, but season six finished really strong as the show pulled ahead of the books for the first time. Seasons 7 and 8, which afaik the writers largely had to make up themselves aside from some key plot points, were a pretty big step down, and they really needed more episodes. Still, I don't absolutely hate the ending like many people seem to, and an underwhelming last couple of seasons doesn't invalidate everything that came before.
