The American Way

A 2016 Election Game

()

Quote
Note: The timeline of the reality in this game is completely the same as in real life before April 2015. This is not an alternative reality scenario, except for the different candidates and election events, etc.

It has been 7 years since the historic election victory of Barrack Obama in 2008, and 3 years since his re-election in 2012. It is 2015, and the country is desperate for something new. The effects of the recession are starting to wear off, but it's echoes are still heard throughout America, mainly in the midwest and rust-belt states. Terrorism is still a very large problem in the world, with ISIS rising in the middle east, and new concerns over who we are really letting into our country. Concerns and movements such as the Iraq war, the Tea Party, and the issue of Gay marriage are gone. New issues, such as border security, healthcare, and global trade leap into the stage of American politics. New and bold candidates must rise up and aim high for the presidency, with new ideas and solutions on how to fix our countries problems.

On the Democratic side, 8 years of President Obama have changed the party from 8 years ago. The Democratic party is now more bold in it's policies and has tracked further left as liberalism is now undoubtedly the party's core ideology. The democratic party, while incumbent, has weakened in its government power. Democrats no longer control the house or senate in congress. There is also a divide internally, between more establishment friendly moderate democrats, and the newer and growing progressive section of the party, heavily defined by the 2011 Occupy Wall Street protests. Despite this, the party is still the leader in popular opinion.

On the Republican side, the momentum is strong within the party and growing. After 8 years of Democratic rule of the executive branch, the Republicans are eager to reclaim the white house. The party has seen major success over the past few years, reclaiming the senate and house of representatives. With a new potential democratic nominee, and new prospects in the country, the party is experimenting with new alternatives to the usual christian conservatism. Tea party movements and the election of 2012 have changed the party. While still the underdogs among popular opinion, the GOP is building stronger platforms and candidates for the upcoming election.

With no incumbent, and a changing political environment, the future of the country and the outcome of the election is up to you.

Rules:

1. This game lasts from July 20, 2015 to November 8, 2016 in-game.

2. Each turn lasts four days (96 hours). This may be extended by 24 hours if a large percentage of candidates have not posted their campaign schedules.

The campaign is divided into three stages:

(July 2015-June 2016) Primary: Candidates from the two parties duel off in their respective party's polling, each aiming for the party's nomination. Starting in February 2016 and running until June, primaries and caucuses will be held to assign delegates to the winners and runner-ups of each state held. I will post the results of each caucus and primary the next turn from the one in which the primary takes place. There will be a debate for each party every 2 turns. The winner and results of the last debate will be displayed the next turn, along with polling numbers posted every turn.

(June-September 2016) Conventions: The candidate with the most delegates from each of their respective party's primaries will go on to win the nomination for each of their respective parties. Both of the winning candidates will choose a running mate, and have the option to request/ask another experienced forum user to act/play as that running mate if they want to.

(August-November 2016) General Election: In this phase, the two candidates and their running mates, along with their campaign management and endorsers, duel on the campaign trail leading to election day on November 8th. The 72 hour turns will represent shorter in game timespans as the race gets hotter. There will be three presidential debates for the main candidates and a vice-presidential debate for the running mates. On November 8th in-game, I will post the news broadcasted election results over a period of 6-8 hours, then there will be a winner. Over the course of the election, polls will be shown for key swing states every turn, as well as election polling maps every so often. Green Party, Libertarian, Constitution, and up to 2 independent candidates are allowed to join in during this phase.

3.Direct message me for endorsements! Only 2 per turn are allowed during the primaries, and 5 per turn are allowed during the convention and general election phases. You can ask for endorsements of politicians, notable people such as celebrities, and newspapers. During the general election, you can get endorsements from large organizations, such as the NRA or the Human Rights Campaign.

4. Many things can cause a candidate to rise or fall in the polls. Attacks by opponents, a RL scandal, endorsements, rallies, strategic planning, your debate performances, your attendance or absence on the campaign trail, and RL current events can sway your polls at the drop of a feather.

5. No celebrities are allowed except a direct few with my permission. Donald Trump is not allowed to play, in order to ensure a more equal, fair, and competitive GOP primary. Clinton is only allowed in the game due to the fact that she had major opposition in RL, so keep that in mind when signing up.

6. No trollish behavior, constant updates, or sockpuppetry.

Quote
A. Don't be in here to get on everyone's nerves. This is a serious thread, in which the most realistic scenarios, gameplay, and results are ideal. Unrealistic celebrity candidates or semi-sarcastic speeches with cursing are not allowed.

B. Give your campaign schedule ONCE PER TERM. You can do it in 2 or 3 parts if you need more time or your post is too big. You can put rally speeches or Q&A's in the schedules, but don't take up the entire schedule. You may also create 1 or 2 posts for a speech or to respond to a candidate for example in the instance of a debate attack or an attack ad, you can make posts responding to that candidate. You can also create ads, 1 per term in primary, 2 per term after that.

C. No sockpuppetry allowed under any circumstance. As some of you know, there was a major case of sockpuppetry in one of the election game threads about a year ago, and it will not be tolerated here. Any suspicion will be reported to a mod which will result in an IP check.

7. Keep it civil and realistic, just like in real life. Pretend like YOU are the presidential candidate yourself.

Follow these rules and you will be good to go.

Lets make this work. I'll be doing my very best to post updates on schedule. Summer is starting and there isn't any excuse for me not to.

The game starts this Wednesday, June 12, at 12 AM.

Also: I would encourage everyone, if they have time, to make an announcement speech for their candidate. Not only does it help identify your campaign themes and bases, but those who do so will get a polling boost once we start the game!

Congressman Renacci Annouces Bid For White House
Wadsworth, OH

Congressman Jim Renacci (OH-16)-I'm not a career politician who has made millions off the backs of the taxpayer. When I was growing up, I never imagined living in the White House and I never had such large ambitions as so many of my fellow colleagues in the Congress do. I grew up in a small town in Pennsylvania with a blue-collar family who earned every dollar unlike the politicians in Washington. When I moved to Ohio in my early twenties, I didn't have more than one hundred dollars but I worked hard, never quit even when times were tough and I was able to create thousands of jobs for the state of Ohio. That's why I love America because this is the only country where that story would be more than fantasy because if you work hard in America and never give up then you will be successful. I never needed a welfare check, I just needed a little determination. That's what America needs right now, a little determination so our country can continue to be the most successful and strongest country on this planet. Every person in this country should be with little determination to be successful in this country.

This is why I am here today. I am going to run for president of the United States so every working class America with a little determination and a dream can achieve the American dream just as I did. I know how to achieve the American Dream because I achieved my own American Dream. The politicians in Washington can't say the same, they have worked off the taxpayer's dime and got rich on the backs of those they have turned their backs on. Real Americans work hard for their money, I worked hard for everything I have ever gotten. I am proud to be an American and I will give a little message to my opponents, Nikki Haley, Rand Paul, George Pataki, I'm a hard worker and I will work my butt off to win this nomination so I can work for the American people in Washington.

Senator Tim Scott announcement Speech, February 6th, 2015

North Charleston, South Carolina

Quote
Hello, my fellow South Carolinians. It's great to be back in the town I grew up in for a special announcement.

Ladies and gentlemen, for the last few years, we've been lied to. For the past few years, we were tricked by a man who pretended to care for us all but truly cared for the coastal elites of the country.

I was just like many of you in 2008. Sure, I disagreed with Obama politically but I thought he would be able to bridge the last racial gap in America today and officially bring an end to any lingering racial divides in this country. Instead, what you see now are thugs tearing apart cities because of a crime that didn't happen. Riots destroying cities, like in Ferguson, Missouri, as the so called'Black Lives Matter' organization pounces deeper and deeper on the divides left by Obama. All Lives Matter. Not just Black or White, Man or Woman, Cop or Civilian, all lives truly matter.

It is with great pride that I announce that I am running for President of this Great Country to try and be the mend of the racial divide that President Obama failed to be. Unlike Obama, I grew up in a poor black family in this city. I faced the devastating effects of my parents divorce from a young age and I was raised by my single mother, who worked tirelessly to make sure her children got a better future. I flunked out of school yet I found my way back by working hard and being true to myself. I got my act together, completed college, and became a successful person in the insurance business.

People will ask if America is ready for two Black Presidents back to back, I say it is! People will ask if one Black President was enough, I say it isn't!

I am a solution to many problems that Obama has left behind. There are a great many things that he shouldn't have touched but he touched anyways and I will fix those things that he had touched.

People will probably be wondering why I'm running for President after I've been in the Senate for only two years when I could just endorse South Carolina's very own Governor, Nikki Haley. I say this to them : From 1995-2008, I served as a member of Charleston's county council, even becoming the chair of it in 2007. In 2009, I was elected to the South Carolina House of Representatives and proved myself as a hard-working and diligent figure in the state house. In 2010, I was elected to represent South Carolina's 1st Congressional District, becoming the state's first Republican African American Representative in 114 years. I proved myself a hard working member of the House and proved that I earned my place, which is why I was re-elected in 2012.

I was then chosen by Nikki Haley to replace Jim DeMint as Senator in 2013 and while I did have initial doubts about my abilities, I've proven myself in the Senate after only two years in it and I promise you, I will prove myself to you on the campaign trail, as the party's nominee, and finally as your President!

I hereby swear that when I decide to focus on a state for a specific amount of time, I will go to every county in that state and listen to the citizens of this great country, from the least populated villages to the largest cities in this country because the President needs to know the ideas of everyone in order to effectively do their job.

I promise you. On this Campaign, I will become known as the man who ended America's Racial Divides and end the war on the American way of life for good.

I pledge myself to be strong leadership for a strong future!

Marco Rubio: A New American Century

()
Miami, Florida
Florida, it's been an honor to be your Senator for the past 4 years. I've met little girls, boys, grandparents, fathers, mothers, and families all across this great state. Florida is leading the nation in unifying together to tackle Climate Change, to tackle ensuring Families are Protected, and we're leading the nation in Spirit. In specific, I met a little girl in Clearwater, her name was Alice. Alice was the daughter of a Hardworking Nurse, and a father who worked in the Oil Industry.

On one Thursday morning, Alice headed off to school, saying bye to her dad, not knowing it would be the last time she would get to say something to him again. Alice's mother wasn't there to say goodbye to her husband, as she was working at the hospital already. Alice boarded the school bus, and her dad headed off to work.

As Alice's dad arrived at work, he had to go and fix a valve at the plant. As he was using his wrench to turn the socket on this valve, oil began to leak onto the rags and floor of the ground. Not knowing this, Alice's father fixed the valve, and took the rags to be burned (a tradition that he and his buddies would do after fixing something at the plant.) He was around the huge fire, and he noticed that the top of the screen of the fire place was removed, but he didn't think anything of it.

As he put the rag into the fire, the fire cought his face, and his uniform. Not knowing what to do, he stumbled, and fell into the fire. He sat there burned for 5 seconds, until his buddies came in and saw what had happened. They called 911 immediately. Once Alice's dad arrived at the Hospital, he was treated. He was recovering, then, the bill came. The bill was for over $20,000. The family couldn't afford it. The Insurance Companies wouldn't help. They were out of solutions.

Alice's dad passed away, simply because the family couldn't afford to pay a Medical Bill. This is because of programs like Obamacare, where they bring up the prices of Medical Costs and Prescription Drugs.

I ask the Democratic Party, are you happy that Alice's father died so that you could gain Political Points while passing Obamacare? Are you proud that you and your corrupt buddies in Washington got this passed, and let Alice's father die? Are you proud that Obamacare rises Prescription Drug Prices?

Folks, today, I'm taking a stand against these Corrupt Democrats, and these Disgusting Policies. It's time that we enact a True American Change. A New Century. That is why I am officially announcing my campaign to run for President of the United States, as a Christian, as a American, and as a Republican, in that order! This campaign is being run because of families like Alice's and others across America. Let's take real change when it comes to this next election, and let's enact some real goddamn change.

Wow, isn't it amazing to be here? It's been an amazing honor to serve as Ohio's Governor for the past six years. I've been able to meet Americans of all different shapes and sizes, from different backgrounds, and from different incomes. This has given me the opportunity to understand what the people of this country want in their government. They want an end to the divisive rhetoric being spouted from the Democrats, they want an end to untested and bad policy. But what they want most is a prepared and honest government that will always put America first.

Over the last six years, I have spearheaded and lead that exact type of government. A government that truly works for the people, and we've seen the results of what this type of leadership can achieve. So my friends, we need to take our example of the success of Ohio and take it to the country as a whole! Which is why i'm proud to officially announce my candidacy for the Republican Nomination for President of the United States of America!

Americans need a President who will deliver on real policy, not one who campaigns and governs on fantasy, like our current President. When I am elected President of the United States, we will deliver a tax cut for millions of middle class working Americans. It's been over 7 years since the Great Recession hit, the people of this country should no longer have to pay the price of Obama's unnecessary taxes.

After the past 8 years of the Obama Presidency, we need new leadership, we need change and we need it now! Join with me in delivering sensible and tested change to America! Join with me in delivering a government that will govern for the majority. Join with me to unite this amazing country!

Thank you all for getting out here today, God Bless Ohio and God Bless these United States of America! Goodbye!

Tammy Baldwin: A More Equal Union

()

"Three years ago, the people of Wisconsin elected me as the first openly gay Senator in US history, continung our proud history of progressivism in this state that goes all the way back to Fighting Bob LaFollette. I have been proud to serve as your Senator for these last three years.

Yet this election is a crucial one. We have Republican candidates who will attempt to undo all the progress that has been made in this ciuntry under President Obama. They deny the existence of climate change, and want to cut social services all across this nation so that their wealthy freinds on Wall Street can get away with as huge a tax cut as possible. They want to keep the minimum wage as low as possible to keep people as poor as possible. They want to roll back protections for the LGBT community. They want to sign as many free trade deals as they can without a care for the American worker. They want to bust our unions to ensure that workers don't have a voice. They want to pass anti-choice laws to prevent a woman being able to control her own body.

We need a bold, progressive agenda for the future. We need a plan to build up our renewable energy sector and end our addiction to fossil fuels. We need a plan to rebuild our national infrastructure. We need to a plan to create jobs and raise the minimum wage. We need to toughen protections for the LGBT community. We need to create a true universal healthcare system. We need to properly enforce our anti-trust laws and prevent the spread of corporate monopolies.

It is with this in mind that I declare my candidacy for Presdeint of the United States of America!

PATAKI 2016 CAMPAIGN LAUNCH
New York, NY

()

For 12 amazing years, I was the Governor of this stunning city and of this truly awe-inspiring state. We have gone through a lot together. We have gone through a lot together, New York and I, but the thing I will never forget is my time as the state's executive on September 11th. The country's collective eyes were focused on us. I felt the need to not only help heal the city and state but even the whole country. We did so much in those previous years, but I'm here to announce my intentions to do something even greater.
The country has been growing more and more divided over the past years. But I believe that my time as the successful Republican leader of one of the most solidly Democratic States in the Union proves that there is hope to heal the divides of the county. In my first Election, I dislodged an entrenched Democratic incumbent in a strongly blue state. My strong performances in each subsequent cycle showed my strength in the state. I was able to convince many Democrats in my state to vote against their candidates. We need to
We need a uniter, not a divider in the White House. The Democrats and even our own party have many people running for this job who are incapable of uniting. Why would we give these divisive people more attention and continue the destruction of American unity and political discourse? I am not that. I am George Pataki, I unite, I inspire and I lead. Thank you.

Agreed, a lot of good Republican candidates so it will be interesting and I think a lot of inter-party battles will take place especially since my candidate will be taking the anti-career politician approach.

My prediction with no information except the political climate of 2015, name recognition and some announcement speeches.

(
)
Delegate Count:
Paul Ryan: 542 (Red)
Marco Rubio: 511 (Orange)
Jeb Bush: 371 (Blue)
Nikki Haley: 312 (Green)
John Kasich: 233 (Lite Blue)
Tim Scott: 140 (Dark Orange)
Rand Paul: 130 (Lite Green)
Jim Renacci: 113 (Dark Red)
Rick Santorum: 74 (Dark Green)
George Pataki: 37

If everyone stays in till the convection then it will likely be brokered with the top candidates being Paul Ryan and Marco Rubio with Black Horses being Nikki Haley, Jeb Bush and John Kasich. Most likely a frontrunner will have to choose a black horse to win the nomination so my prediction of a ticket would be something like Rubio/Haley or Rubio/Scott or Rubio/Renacci or Ryan/Kasich or Ryan/Scott.

Paul Ryan Announcement

Milwaukee, WI

()

3 years ago, I ran with Governor Romney as his Vice President. I warned about the dangers of the Democratic agenda. I warned about the impact of Obamacare and reckless Democratic spending. The truth is that healthcare costs are still going up, deductibles are still going up. Meanwhile, President Obama and the Democrats, in the Senate and House, do nothing about it. The American people, got sick and tired of Democratic inaction, and Republicans took back the House in 2010 and the Senate in 2014. That is why, I am announcing that I am running for President of the United States. Hillary Clinton and Joe Biden are more of the same of Obama's failed policies. They will defend the disaster known as Obamacare, I will repeal the law and replace it, with something that works for the American people. The Democrats claim that this law gave healthcare to millions of Americans, what it actually did, is it made healthcare, more expensive for middle-class families. Hillary Clinton and Joe Biden, want your healthcare costs, to continue to rise. In Congress, I have a proven record. I led the fight to balance the budget. We cannot let spending spiral out of control. If we elect tax-and-spend liberals Hillary Clinton or Joe Biden, they will raise your taxes and then spend it on pointless social programs, that we seriously need to consider phasing out. I led the fight on entitlement reform. The fact is simply that either we cut Social Security benefits now, or we lose the program, forever. The Social Security program is becoming insolvent, I have a plan to cut the benefits, but not in a drastic way, with the main goal, being protecting Social Security for future generations. Lastly, as Speaker of the House, I have led the opposition to the Obama agenda. We have taken on the President, and we have let him know when his policies were wrong. I am bringing nearly 20 years of experience in Congress to the table, and during my time, in Congress, my priority was never money or donors, it was the people of Wisconsin, as President my priority will be the people of this great nation. Thank you, God bless you, and God bless America.

Breaking News!

Quote
People of America, we stand at a turning point in America. Eight years of broken promises under President Obama, eight years where millions continue to struggle, eight years where the people felt a level of government control unparalleled by any time in our history. But the time has come to make a choice, to pick another democrat and continue the failures of the last eight years, or to move on and begin the process of righting the ship. That is why I am here before you, to announce that I am running for president, that I am here to right the ship.

I've learned a lot from my time as governor of Florida from watching my father and brother take on the responsibility of leading this country. In that time I've talked with people, of all ages, from the CEOs who create jobs and invent in this nation, to the hard working common folk who just want the government out of their lives. I'll be talking to even more folks as I begin a tour of the states, making my case, and hearing the concerns you face. So look out for the Jeb-mobile America, because this bus won't stop until I've made my case to everyone in this nation. Lets get to work!

Joe Biden Announcement Speech-Scranton, PA

“Seven years ago, I received one of the greatest honors of my life. I was asked to serve as Vice President under one of the greatest Presidents this country has ever seen: President Barack Obama! For the past eight years, I served the country as Vice President just as I served the people of Delaware in the Senate for 36 years: With honor, dignity, and respect for the office I held. For the past eight years, together as a nation, we achieved great things, bringing the nation out of one of the worst recessions the country has ever seen, we saw civil rights expand for Americans across the country, and we showed the world once again that America will not give in to the fear of terrorism.

But there is still work to be done. The economic opportunities given to millions of Americans have to be expanded to bring millions more out of poverty. Education opportunities across the country need to be expanded to give more Americans the chance to excel. America needs to continue to stand by our allies around the world.

The work isn’t done. The only way it can be done is not by changing paths, but by continuing along the path we’re already on. I am the best candidate to continue to lead us down the path, which is why I am announcing my candidacy for President of the United States!”

Rebuild the American Dream

Quote
Hello Baltimore! I am here to tell you that I am seeking the highest office in the land, and I would like to know what you think because this is the city it all started. I spent 8 years as your chief executive as mayor, I spent 8 years as your chief executive as Governor, and I ask for your votes to spend 8 years as your chief executive as President of the United States of America. I am asking this because of the fact our nation is at a crucial crossroads, the crossroads of progress and regression, the crossroads of freedom and fear, and the crossroads of Democracy or Demagoguery.

For too long has the number in your bank account, determined how much you matter to Presidential candidates. I am throwing down the gauntlet today, and I am saying to the special interests and billionaires, I. am. not. for. sale. We are a nation by the people and for the people. When you send me to Washington, we will win because it is a matter of life and death. Our nation faces disaster, the disaster of Republican demagoguery, the disaster of climate change, and the disaster of war.

Some of my Democratic adversaries in this race supported the Iraq War, I was a critic of the Iraq War. I am the candidate that is against war, that is against fiscal irresponsibility, and is in favor of putting the American People, and the American Working Class first. The symbol of this nation is the statue of liberty, not a barbed wire fence. We as a nation stand for Life, Liberty, and the Pursuit of Happiness and as President, I promise I will do all in my power to help every American succeed in accomplishing this goal.

I ask you from here and Baltimore, to those in Maine, and even those in Miami. Join me and be proud to say I am a member of the Democratic Party. I am a Liberal. I am a Progressive. and I am a Democrat. We need to fight against and stand up to Wall Street, who think they can cost hard-working Americans billions and plunge our world into financial chaos, do you know what I say. No more. If we can bail out Wall Street, we can afford to bail out main street! We need to rebuild the American dream, because it is fading. We are all Americans and we will persevere. Thank you all and God Bless the United States of America!

Heath Shuler presidential announcement in Knoxville Tennessee
()
For the almost past half decade we have seen a president that while I have admit isn’t perfect and I disagreed with on some issues. Still at the end of the day he has put America back on its feet and working again.

We have seen the GOP instead of trying to be a bipartisan force in getting things done they continue to block and deny anything President Obama gives even ifs a compromise on something!

We need a president that will work for both Americans and both parties while setting our differences aside on important issues such as trade, the budget foreign policy and healthcare so that is why I am running for the Democratic Nomination of the President Of the United States.

I am not the Tax and Spend Democrats as of Secretary Clinton and others I am a Democrat who wants Financial responsibility like middle class tax cuts, balancing the budget, supporting the right to bare arms while at the same time I am socially progressive I will fight for LGBT rights and a woman’s right to choose and making sure the future of America has a bright and better education and make sure the top 1% get the bigger piece of the pie!

Thank you and I will see you on the campaign trail!

Amy Klobuchar Announces Candidacy in Duluth, MN

()

"Hello, Duluth! I'm so happy to be here in the Iron Range, where my family has ties that go very deep. My grandfather was an iron worker, like so many other hardworking Minnesotans in the region. He never finished high school, but achieved the American dream for his family by working hard, saving money, and sending my father to college.  I stand before you as the granddaughter of an iron-ore miner, as the daughter of a teacher and a newspaperman, as the first woman elected to the United States Senate from the state of Minnesota, to announce my candidacy for president of the United States.

I was proud to endorse President Obama seven years ago, however, we still have much work to do. We need to end the digital divide by pledging to provide internet access to all Americans, and yes that means for rural America! We must strive for shared prosperity, where no American goes broke to pay for their medication, where universal healthcare is achieved, and no worker is untrained for the job market of tomorrow! I have always believed in standing up for what's right, as both Senator and during my time as a prosecutor. This is why I have been an advocate for criminal justice reform, working to prosecute the guilty and protect the innocent. This is why I have stood up against the gun lobby, alongside the majority of Americans, for common sense background checks and gun control. This is why I've fought for lower prescription drug prices against the pharmaceutical companies. As the daughter of a union woman, I know a little something about the power of the little guy standing up for what's right.

Duluth, that's why I'm asking you to join this campaign, it's homegrown and doesn't answer to special interests. We've heard how far the odds are against such big names, but we here in the heartland know a little something about grit, determination, and hard work. I'm not afraid to work to make your voices heard, thank you!"

It has been so great to Serve Texas in the Senate since 2013. We've done so much for this state, and for the economy. I know that Texans are better off, and so is the rest of the country. I am announcing my run for President of the United States to end this treacherous era of Barack Obama, and bring an era of Conservatism. Where we reduce costs, lower taxes, and represent and fight for everyday Americans.

Republicans, and Americans, we must come together to stand up to Barack Obama, and stand up for the Constitution. I ask that you join my campaign and help us fight for the Constitution, from the Oval Office. Thank you so much!

Announcement Speech

I want to tell you a story.

A little over 100 years ago, textile mills in Lawrence like the ones behind us today employed tens of thousands of people, and immigrants flocked here from more than 50 countries for a chance to work at the looms.

Lawrence was one of the centers of American industry. Business was booming. The guys at the top were doing great, but workers made so little money that families were forced to crowd together in dangerous tenements and live on beans and scraps of bread. Inside the mills, working conditions were horrible. Children were forced to operate dangerous equipment. Workers lost hands, arms and legs in the gears of machines. One out of every three adult mill workers died by the time they were 25.

Then, on January 11, 1912, a group of women who worked right here at the Everett Mill discovered that the bosses had cut their pay. And that was it , the women said “enough is enough.” They shut down their looms and walked out. Soon workers walked out at another mill in town. Then another. Then another ,  until 20,000 textile workers across Lawrence were on strike. These workers ,  led by women, didn’t have much. Not even a common language.

But despite these odds, they overcame the challenges to make history's most important accomplishments.

They organized. They embraced common goals. They translated the minutes of their meetings into 25 different languages, so that the English and Irish workers who had been here for years and the Slavic and Syrian workers new to America could stand together.

They hammered out their demands: Fair wages, overtime pay, and the right to join a union.

Big business at the time called those demands a threat to the very survival of America ,  and the bosses tried to shut it down. They spread rumors and fear about the strikers. One factory owner even paid a guy to plant sticks of dynamite around town so he could frame the workers as a violent mob. The mill owners also owned city government, which declared martial law and called in the militia. Some strikers died in violent clashes with the police. It was a hard fight. Families that were already going to bed hungry had to make do with even less.

They were under attack. But they stuck together , and they won!

Stories like these are the heart of America's progress, the story of solidarity between working families of all races, creeds, and origin. Together, we instituted minimum wage and worker safety laws; they fought for good wages and benefits. They built the country we have today, opening new chapters in the book of American history, through hard work, grit, and sacrifice. It's not the triumph of one person that makes us stronger, it's the triumph of all of us.

Together, they unleashed the progressive era of this country.

I've seen the promise of America in my own life. My mom saved my family with a minimum wage job. My parents would have never dreamed that their daughter would be a U.S. Senator, let alone run for president. But for too many of my fellow Americans, the dream of progress and opportunity is being denied by the grind of an economy that funnels all the wealth to the top. Wall Street crooks and predatory corporations enlisted politicians to cut them a fatter slice of the pie, they stacked the courts to block campaign finance reform and they stifled unions so nobody could stop them.

We see the effects of it now. The price of everything, childcare, health insurance, prescription drugs, is skyrocketing while the paychecks of working families like mine barely budge. Economic mobility is at an all-time low, families just can't get their way out of the cracks that Koch brothers have set for them. They can't vote out corrupt politicians because corporate executives finance Congress to keep them on their side.

But it doesn't have to be this way.

We CAN unleash the next progressive era.

We CAN rebuild the middle class!

I'm proud to officially announce my candidacy for President of the United States!

It's a hard journey ahead of us. Corporate executives and corrupt politicians are ready to stop us at every turn. That's no surprise, they've tried to halt every progressive movement in American history. As Franklin Delano Roosevelt once said a little under a century ago, "I welcome their hatred." Today, we stand here today to rebuild his testament to our nation's unmatched spirit. 'Equality of opportunity… Jobs for those who can work… Security for those who need it… The ending of special privilege for the few… The preservation of civil liberties for all… a wider and constantly rising standard of living.' We can live in a country where those principles ring true for every working family.

I ask you today to join me on this journey.

Granted!

So I can't pm yet for endorsements, so can I get Steve King (R-IA) and Mike Conaway (R-TX)?

I'll grant you those, thanks for letting me know!

I'm going to be out of town from Sunday to Saturday with no internet so I won't be able to play the next turn

That's fine. I wont penalize you.

Jesse Ventura Campaign Announcement, Saint Paul, Minnesota

“Hello there, St. Paul!

I would like to thank all of you for coming out here and hearing what I have to say. I would also like to thank the people of Brooklyn Park for electing me all those years ago as mayor, starting my political career. I would also like to thank the people of Minnesota for allowing me to serve the great office of the Governorship.

Now, I would like to go back in time to the date of November 3rd, 1998, the date when the great state of Minnesota chose me to be her Governor, when just weeks and weeks back, I was being called a spoiler, a joke, a man who could never make the way from wrestler to politician. The night that I won, I made a speech in which I outlined that I hoped my victory would encourage the Democrats and the Republicans to become less partisan. It doesn’t seem like the two parties picked this up. In fact, it seems like they saw what I said, and ran away from it at top speed.

Over the last couple of years, as the Reform party died, and it became very clear that there would not be a new American third party to change our corrupt two-party system, the people became dissatisfied. Our options have been between two awful candidates, and little option of another choice. Washington has become less able to work together, and more partisan, with the Democrats spitting in the face of the Republicans, and vice versa. And after taking a good long look at all of the major party candidates, I’m feeling pretty sad about the future of this country.

So, after a long month of talking with family, friends, and allies, I have decided to give another choice for America. I announce my candidacy for President of the United States as an Independent candidate. It is time that we show the Political Machine that change needs to be done, and not any fake change that has been promised in the pass, I mean real change. Change such as a bigger role for third parties by changing our system to an instant runoff electoral system, returning any budget surplus to American Citizens, ending the war on drugs, and getting America back on track! I’m Jessie Ventura, and I’m running on real change.

(Posting this on all active games, not singling out anyone or any particular game yet)

Friendly reminder that the policy regarding image posting must be followed on the games, there was already an announcement on the board and it is followed by this. Watermarked images are out of the question, and posted images must be attributed in terms of origin (even in footnotes at the end of the post so as to not break the illusion).

To give you a useful example taken from a player in Atlasia (I hope he doesn't mind):

Quote
(Image in question)

Note for mods: Image taken from Wikipedia's article on Pittsburgh

And one from Dave himself:

Quote
(Image in question)

President Bush Nominates Henry Paulson as Treasury Secretary 2 (https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:President_Bush_Nominates_Henry_Paulson_as_Treasury_Secretary_2.jpg)
Shealah Craighead [Public domain], via Wikimedia Commons

For the time being I'll be removing the watermarked ones, and from this second announcement on pictures that are not attributed (that comes with an infraction). I get that it will take some effort to adapt at first because it changes how pictures are used within the board, but it is necessary to make such an effort.

(Please don't make me use the flamethrower)

Holding up a policy like that makes me less willing to continue this game or anything on the election games board. A truly terrible rule that breaks the flow and feel of the game.

Are you just going to delete images that people haven't marked?

In all seriousness, it's not really optional for Lumine or Dave. If Dave wants to continue running the site he needs there to be some rule of law, and if people keep on posting copyrighted images then there is a large liability for the site to get shut down. I just really hope more people see where they're coming from as I don't want to see people get banned or the site shutdown.

Why don't we just make it to where if we used images that are labeled for re-use, then we don't have to hyperlink them, but if we get ones that aren't labeled for reuse, we then have to cite them?

Well yes. I very much regret the impact it may have on some players but sadly, the policy is necessary if Dave and the site are to avoid legal issues, and not a random act of fascism. So yes, I will have to delete images that are not attributed.

Indeed. Would I wish it was optional? Yes, but it isn't and there are good - or at least compelling - reasons for it.

When you go to google something, for example say I google, "Marco Rubio Speaking."

I would go to the tool menu, press on Usage Rights, then press on Labeled for Reuse.

The images that are labeled under Reuse, are non-copyrighted, which means no punishment for using them.

JIM WEBB ANNOUNCES PRESIDENTIAL BID ON MSNBC
[/b]

Joe Scarborough "We are now joined by former Virginia Senator Jim Webb, and we have word he has a big announcement he wants to share with us. Jim?"

Jim Webb "That's right Joe. But first, I just want to thank you for having me today."

Scarborough "Our pleasure. So what is this announcement of yours?"

Webb "Well Joe, I have done some reflecting over the past few weeks, and one thing is clear: our party, the Democrat Party, has swung to the left in recent years, and as a result he have taken a real beating, from local elections all the way to Congress. But it seems we haven't learned from our mistake. In fact, we have some of the most liberal presidential candidates ever running for the nomination this year.

We won't win this election if we nominate someone who keeps pushing us to the left. America is more polarized than just about ever before, and the only way we can win is if we nominate a moderate, someone who can appeal to both sides and unite our nation. Seeing that there are no other candidates who I believe can do this, I have decided to run myself."

Scarborough "So it's official: Jim Webb is in!"

Webb (laughing) "That's right, Joe, that's right."

Scarborough "But how do you win? What do you think makes you stand out from the other candidates, and if you do win the nomination, how do you win the election?"

Webb "Good question. Like I said, I'm a moderate, but I'm still a Democrat. I pushed for criminal justice and drug law reform, I was a critic of the Iraq War, I supported the repeal of Don't Ask, Don't Tell. But at the same time, I believe in a strong foreign policy plan, I support the Second Amendment, and I think we need to address the issues of immigration and why people are coming here illegally. I still believe that my views are in line with many of your average Democrat voters, the average middle-class or blue collar worker, and once the message gets out, I think we have a great chance at beating out the other guys, who are all fighting for that small, hard left vote bloc. And of course, once we win the primary, the election will be easy, because my views are also in line with most of the country, and I think people won't be too happy voting for a pro-rich tax cut, pro-big business Republican."

Scarborough "Alright, I'm afraid that's all the time we have, so Senator, thanks for coming on and sharing your plans with us. Folks, former Senator and current presidential candidate, Jim Webb."

Webb "Thanks again, Joe. Appreciate it."

Heads up, I considered what jakobisgood argued and unless the images policy is further specified I will allow it, just as long as the image is still attributed and has no watermarks.
