T-Paw, if he still counts. I have seen Mitt Romney, Paul Ryan, and Ron Paul in person, but haven't met them. Not that this is eligible, but I've also shaken hands and briefly chatted with the then-Deputy Mayor/former police chief of Detroit.

Supposedly when I was an infant me and my parents were in Wildwood on vacation and ran into Senator Bill Bradley. I was like two or three years old though, so I don't remember, but my parents recall this. he used to walk around the New Jersey shore coastline every Labor Day weekend, so it's definitely plausible. That is really the only example I can think of.

I've met several mayors of my town and state legislature members though, and other local elected officials. In fact, my Grandma used to be a relatively powerful councilwoman. But none of those are really major politicians.

I've never met any major politicians. The closest thing would be my town's mayor, but that doesn't count.

I got a picture with Tim Kaine in 2011 and hung out a little bit with him at a parade in 2012. He was super nice and genuine. Gerry Connolly was also at the parade but when he was not friendly.

I saw Terry McAuliffe in a bar once. He shook my hand and I told him to "have a good one."

Once I was at a Washington Capitals game and I saw Tom Davis desperately looking around trying to find a napkin to wipe some sauce off his fingers.

Met four or five state reps and state senators. Once I ate dinner in the house of a MN state rep and when I was a little kid I was friends with the son of member of leadership in the VA HoD.

Don't hang out in the same social circles as many of y'all being a small-town kid from Downstate Oregon.

These are folks I met in small close environments, no campaign rallies, just in groups of 20-50 people having conversations with political figures about a wide variety of issues (Real Town Halls)....

The highest ranking politician I have met has been Jose Manuel Soria, who at the time was Minister of Industry; and also a former mayor of my town and former president of the island council.

I have also met Juan Fernando López Aguilar, who at the time was just a backbench MEP, but who had been Minister of Justice in the first Zapatero cabinet.

In a summer camp I did I also met a PP politician who was the mayor of the small Castillian town the summer camp was in. He is now a Senator, so I guess he did pretty well. He certainly seemed like a nice guy.

Finally I have also met a handful of EU politicians when I went to the EU parliament, but can't remember who they were; and 1 local politician who again I can't remember well.

I've also seen John Thune, George McGovern, Tom Daschle, Bill Janklow, and Jim Abourezk in person.  Bill and Hillary Clinton too, at a campaign rally.

Can't think of any others who were at least a US representative.

Met all of them. Talked with Yang the most. But Romney was the nicest out of them by far.

Nice. I've asked because I noticed many people tend to present simply seeing a public figure from up close as "meeting".

Dave relaxed the rules so here I will post the official policy platform statements for a few candidates in Oregon, who I met live in person during a pivotal time in Oregon Politics....

Here is Fred Oerther's Oregon Voter pamphlet from the 1990 OR-GOV GE:

()

Here is Randy Prince's Oregon Voter pamphlet statement from the 1990 OR-SEN-PUB PRIM:

()

Here is Harry Lonsdale's Voter pamphlet statement from the 1990 OR-SEN-GE:

()

Thanks to Dave & Virginia for relaxing certain rules regarding posting of images that required an extensively long approval process, even for posters without priors and citing from public sourced domains....

Oregon was going through a dramatic transformation when the late '80s hit....

Our economy and unemployment rate were the hardest hit at the heights of the Reagan Recession of the early '80s....

Reagan's solution to deal with "stagflation" and associated monetary policies of the regime essentially stopped housing starts cold in the tracts.

The economy of Oregon at that time was 40% dependent upon Timber and Mills throughout the state were shuttered and workers furloughed and Oregon experienced one if not the highest unemployment rate in the Nation.

The bosses in the Mid '80s promised us the Tech would be the salvation, as Timber went from 40% of Oregon GDP t0 20% and Tech caught up....

Then the Bush Sr recession of the '80s hit, and once again Oregonians  are suffering....

Bill Clinton comes in and Timber and "Old Growth" Wars heat up in Oregon with the false dichotomy of jobs vs envt and meanwhile the Rednecks & Hippy "downstate Oregonians" do what they do best during recessions... grow some Weed on the black market to support the family while stable jobs are not in large demand.

Met these Oregonian figures during that time, and Mike DeWine when I was out in College in Ohio, literally a 25 Minute drive from his front porch.

No voters pamphlet, but his wife has iced tea and cookies prepared as local environmentalists from a wide variety of backgrounds chatted with him on the front porch about the EPA loophole that allowed hazardous waste to be burnt in cement kilns, including one less than 30 miles away....

Wow--- that's a pretty big list of some major known heavy hitters esp between '11 > '16 !

Looks like some pretty good resume material if you are an Op, Lobbyist, or directly involved in the world of Washington Politics....

The '11/'12 experience indicates a certain background....

Personally, the most impressive item on that list was meeting Jimmy Carter in '18 considering how many folks wait in line just for the opportunity to hear him speak....

Attending Carter's Bible study was definitely the most intimate of these occasions.  It was a short lesson (maybe only 20-25 minutes), but President and Mrs. Carter were extremely gracious with and chatted with all the guests afterwards.  We arrived from Athens the night before and got to the church (with lots of coffee) at 4:00 a.m.

The Trump meeting was interesting, but pretty uneventful.  I was doing some low-level staffing for Republican Senator who was meeting with him and Republican leadership at the RNC that day.  My job was to pretty much to carry briefing books and get coffee.  I didn't even get to do the whole "[Shakes hands]Hi my name is..." thing with Trump, but I did get to see him interact with other politicians in a no-media type of environment, which I guess is a pretty rare insight.

A lot more if including ones I saw in person but didn't speak to or shake hands.

My mother was friends with DNC Chair John Bailey’s son in the nineties. Not sure if that counts for much, but lots of interesting stories.

If we include shaking hands, Geraldine Ferraro the day before the 1984 election. I told her oh, I know you've heard this a lot since the debate, but kick their ass! She gave a kind oh, but in retrospect obviously forced, laugh and said oh we will. Very brave of her since she knew what the numbers were.

Gary Hart during his incipient 1988 presidential campaign when he visited the rainbow kitchen, a famous Food Bank, serving Pittsburgh.

Bill Clinton a few weeks before the 1992 election. While shaking his hand I told him that he had inspired me to use my law degree once I graduate to help Society. And I swear to God he gave the stereotypical Darrell Hammond impression of a thumbs up plus nodding his head while sticking his tongue out and biting it. He really does that!

I met Dennis kucinich when he was running for president in 2008, when he came to host our small rural Ohio County Democratic Jefferson Jackson Day breakfast. Oh my goodness he is Tiny. And yes, his wife is that gorgeous.

I met then Governor Ted Strickland when he came to our County Democratic dinner. Oh, and another year I similarly met then candidate for attorney general Richard cordray.

Briefly met one-on-one then State AG, now Governor Mike dewine, at the small County prosecutor's office I was working at at the time. When he asked where I'd gone to undergraduate, I told him oh, and he shared that one of his daughters had attended that's small liberal arts colleges well. When I asked what she was doing with herself nowadays his face grew quite grim and he told me she had died. I could have shrunk into a hole at that point.

Most of mine are pretty boring photo lines at conferences/fundraisers and the like.  The only really cool story was with Rick Santorum.  I met him in college when we hosted him on campus.  This was during the 2016 primaries, right after Cruz had trounced Trump in Wisconsin.  The College Republicans executive board went out to dinner with Santorum before the event.  Someone asked him what he thought should happen in the event no one got to 1237 delegates to secure the nomination (which was something that was being very widely discussed at the time).  Without flinching, he said that they should give it to "the guy who came in second last time".

A couple others on the list, I've had brief conversations with apart from a handshake, and Mark Green randomly commented on a Facebook post of mine once, but the only story at all like Badger's was my Santorum one.

I spent a week in Washington as a senior in high school as one of my state's two participants in the United States Senate Youth Program. I got to meet Thurmond then, but not Hollings as he was on the campaign trail in Iowa and New Hampshire. The hotel we were boarded at that week (the Mayflower) was where Reagan/Bush kicked off their reelection campaign.

Jo Leinen (SPD), then-Member of the European Parliament
Annegret Kramp-Karrenbauer (CDU), then-Governor of Saarland, incumbent Secretary of Defense
Oliver Luksic (FDP), Member of Parliament
Christian Lindner (FDP), incumbent chairman and parliamentary leader of the FDP
Isolde Ries (SPD), deputy speaker of the state legislature

No foreign politicians

But...

for Belgium
Hilde Crevits (CD&V), who was at the time minister of education. I met her while I went to Brussel to finish some high school exams (some kind of education institution dedicated to just allow you to finish your exams, while not going to school).

Vincent Van Quickenborne (Open VLD), in terms of Twitter perhaps the closest to Donald Trump, because from all politicians here, he tweets the most. I don't think i've met him in person, but he once "recommended my twitter" to his followers, and also gave me his private phone number at some time, mostly related to the weather. Eventually i did nothing with it, due to my depression, but at least it counts for something. He was mayor of my city at the time, and is currently minister of justice. Because he recommended me, some other famous politicians & journalists also followed my Twitter at the time.

Stefaan De Clercq (CD&V), actually not him, but in a child custody case, his wife was my lawyer while he was minister of justice. Ironically the big rival of the former, and also mayor of the same city, and also been a former minister of justice.

I've also spended the night once with the candidate from my political party for my city and for my province, but she didn't get elected... But if polling is true, she will become a MP at the next election, or she might become one.

I don't have Twitter anymore, but I do have Facebook, and for some reason I do have of course a lot of party members as friends, but in some occassions, some people have added me and i don't know why (like the chairman of another Belgian unity party that is a minor party), as well as the rector of Ghent University (and i didn't add him, he added me, and i don't know why, but for some reason he seems to have a lot of marxist-ideological friends). It's quite fun for a student that your rector adds you, and not vice versa (which I would never do, because of the rules of hierarchy).

The irony of all of this, he was added while I didn't know who he was. I assumed he was just another average PVDA member, but he turns out to be my rector, which is weird.

House: Bob Dold, John Shimkus, Rodney Davis, Mike Bost, Darin LaHood, Adam Kinzinger, Peter Roskam, Jerry Weller, Kevin McCarthy, Steve Scalise, Dan Crenshaw, Will Hurd, Andy Kim, Matt Gaetz, John Katko, David Valadao, Jim Hagedorn, Brian Fitzpatrick, Van Hilleary, and many more.

Gov. Hugh Carey (D-NY)
Rep. Liz Holtzman (D-NY)
Rep. Bella Abzug (D-NY)
Rep. Tom Downey (D-NY)
Bess Meyerson (D), candidate for 1980 NY Senate Democratic nomination
Former Attorney General Ramsey Clark (D)
Mayor Ed. Koch (D-NY)
Suffolk County Executive Patrick Halpin (D)
Gov. Ed King (D-MA)
Holyoke Mayor Martin Dunn (D)
FL Senate President Mike Haridopolous (R-Merritt Island)
Rep. Bill Posey (R-FL)

The best story I have was when I met Gov. King of MA.  We were at a parade held there the Sunday after St. Patrick's Day every year; the event was a World Class Drinking Event and I was an active alcoholic at that time (early 1980s).  Gov. King was a jerk because he raised the drinking age, which no active alcoholic could easily stomach.  But I was drunk (in the early afternoon) and there he was, sticking his hand out saying (in a bit of an Irish brogue) "I'm Governor King!".  I shook his hand and said "What's shakin', Gov?".

The person whom I liked (who I didn't think I'd like) was Bella Abzug.  She was, in some ways, the AOC of her day, but she was personable and a substantive human being in ways AOC can't even dream of.  She was NOT the abrasive person of her media persona; she was friendly and cheerful, combative, but in a "Happy Warrior" way.  Even then, as a pro-life Democrat, I disagreed with her, but I am sorry I did not vote for her in the primary.  (I voted for Ramsey Clark, a vote that I deeply regret today.)   She lost that primary, lost the Mayoral primary in 1977. and lost to a Republican for a Congressional seat on NY's Upper East Side; the negative media rep did her in.  It's too bad; she would have been a better fighter for NY than the corporate hack S. William Green or the shallow Carolyn Maloney.
