Title: Do you learn more on Atlas than you learned at college?
Post by: Scott 🤡🌏 on June 20, 2019, 03:33:45 pm
Despite all the memes, silliness, trolls, white noise, drama, etc., I think it's safe to say that, overall, Atlas is a far better repository of information than almost any college.

And any polysci major who's never cited Atlas for an assignment or a project is fake and should be banned IMO.

I cited it in high school, but didnít have many projects related to American politics in college, so watch it with the accusations, bub. That said, this place had been integral to my education in political theory and American political history.

On political issues, definitely yes.

My interest in the United States and American politics in general over the years also heavily advanced my English language skills (the forum, English Wikipedia, books, MSNBC/CNN). The English training I received from school does not even make up half of my current skills. I'd also say I speak pretty much standard American English without accent. My American uncle may play a role here as well. I don't know why Melania Trump, Arnold Schwarzenegger and Henry Kissinger have that much of an accent even though they've been in the US for decades (however, their vocabulary overall is certainly wider than mine).

Atlas always provided some in-depth views on political history that really helped refined the simplified fairy tale you get taught in everything short of an advanced college course (of which I was only fortunate enough to take one, about the Civil War and Reconstruction and the true political coalitions behind both), and for that I am truly thankful.  Gems like Mechaman (spelling?) are truly missed.  Even the tsunami of shltstain partisans of the last 5 years or so doesn't take away from that.  So, to answer your question, I guess kind of!

Than Grad School, no. Than Undergrad, possibly. Than High School or Middle School, most certainly.

About politics, economics, and political history yes, absolutely, because I didn't take classes in those subjects in college. About Japanese literature, which was my major, of course not.

About most of American and Western European politics, yes. That being said, certain things in American politics (e.g. ethnic politics) and 95% of things about politics and history outside of the West, I learned more in college. Though I don't think I would've taken as many classes about non-Western places if it weren't for Atlas making me feel pretty confident in my knowledge of American history and politics.

Then again I am not studying political science and have never studied it in college or high school so it's just different fields I guess

Maybe for the one Poli Sci course I took, but that would be offset by the misinformation posted about taxation. You'd get crucified trying to use Atlas tax knowledge in an accounting or finance major.

Maybe about politics, but about just about any other subject, no way. The internet is riddled with lots of misconceptions about my field.

For politics yes ,For everything else, lol no. Even for history which I took in high school and took 1 class in college , I learned way more about that subject in class than I did here .

I was an agricultural economics major with a polisci minor, and I find Atlas to be more intellectually stimulating than any polisci course I took at college.

But no.

Hint:  Political science is a dumb major, don't choose it kiddos

Yes, I have learned a lot more about politics from Atlas than in college, though that was mostly because I majored in something different and only took a few Political Science courses at the time.

Well, in a bog standard Humanities/Social Science university course the real thing you're learning is the skills of being able to take in and analyse information, structure your thoughts, deal with complex issues and so on... The actual "facts" that you learn are not so important in the long run.

In that respect, atlas is clearly realy no match for a university degree.
