Title: Did Henry Wallace win a single county in 1948 Post by: morgankingsley on June 22, 2019, 06:03:46 AM As we all know, Henry Wallace when he ran as a progressive in 1948 got no electoral votes, but he did run nearly the same amount of votes as Strom Thurmond, who won 4 states, and performed rather well in the other 7 Confederate states. But did he finish first in at least county, and if not, where was he closest? And before the election, was there any polls or data that indicated that he would have had a chance to win at least one state?
Title: Re: Did Henry Wallace win a single county in 1948 Post by: Podgy the Bear on June 22, 2019, 09:06:51 AM I'm sure someone could get the data. But I would have to say no. Close to half his national vote came from the NYC area. Of the five counties, Wallace received 18% of the vote in the Bronx, 16% in Kings County (Brooklyn), and 15% of the vote in New York County (Manhattan). That reduced Truman's NYC vote to about 52%. And that was enough to tip the state to Dewey.

VOTE! on June 22, 2019, 03:45:37 PM As we all know, Henry Wallace when he ran as a progressive in 1948 got no electoral votes, but he did run nearly the same amount of votes as Strom Thurmond, who won 4 states, and performed rather well in the other 7 Confederate states. There's no comparison between the two. Thurmond ran only in the South (with Truman not even being on the ballot in Alabama nor listed as the official Democratic nominee in Mississippi), thus being able to get electoral votes, where a significant part of the electorate was disenfranchised. Votes for Wallace were spread across the country. Title: Re: Did Henry Wallace win a single county in 1948 Post by: nclib on June 25, 2019, 09:09:11 PM Atlas has Wallace's best counties as:

Does a socialist doing well there in 1912 really help explain why Wallace did well there in 1948? Title: Re: Did Henry Wallace win a single county in 1948 Post by: MASHED POTATOES. VOTE! on July 14, 2019, 02:24:03 PM I've actually made a map a while ago of second places by county in 1912 (couldn't find the data for TX and GA, and some random white counties)
