Title: Ron DeSantis: Overrated or underrated?
Post by: Suburbia on July 31, 2019, 11:25:24 PM
Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis is viewed as a potential Republican presidential contender in 2024, 2028, 2032 or 2036 one day.

Is he overrated or underrated?

Neither. I think we need to be closer to 2024 to analyze this further.

Neither. He's governed like somebody that knows he just barely won, & has been running a remarkably tight ship here in Florida, & has definitely done a good job in fixing some of our governmental dysfunction. I actually like some of what I've seen since January re: the environment, marijauna, etc., though I vehemently oppose his reimplementation of a poll tax for the people whose rights we voted to restore last November. And those 2018 campaign ads... they won't age well.

Right now, massively overrated and over talked about given he's been in office less than a year.

A bit overrated at this point but I think he still has a decent enough chance of being President some day.

Hard to tell right now, though he is likely an odds-on favorite for re-election at this point

Overrated. He has negative charisma.

What Republican potential candidates have charisma in your eyes?

What Republican potential candidates have charisma in your eyes?

Dan Crenshaw is definitely one. But I haven't heard many of them speak besides those two.

Dan Crenshaw is definitely one. But I haven't heard many of them speak besides those two.
lmao if we're talking about overrated, Crenshaw is equal to Nikki Haley.

Nikki Haley isn’t overrated.

Probably a little overrated, but not nearly as overrated as Nikki Haley.

How, exactly, is she overrated?

How is she not? She’s a generic pre-Trump era Republican with nothing particularly compelling besides her ethnic background. She’s the next Rubio.

Underrated.  Natural successor of the Trump movement without the personality problems.

Exactly. She would be better off as a staunch defender of Trump, because no one is going to give her credit for waffling. She couldn't even condemn blatantly racist statements, so she's firmly wedded to the Trump-GOP, whether she likes it or not.

But she condemned Trump making fun of Elijah Cummings amirite :)

(But yeah Nikki Haley is a paper tiger)

It really depends on what's happening in 2024, right?

Is it like 2000/2016?
It will then probably be a close race between someone between the new and old establishment like Cruz or Pence. There's a 90% chance it will be Pence and DeSantis would be up there with other "Trumps without Twitter" contenders for VP.

2008?
It will probably be someone who is as not-Trump as possible while still being sufficiently right of center. Marco Rubio or Nikki Haley. I think Rubio gets it. Maybe he would still be a "gamechanger" like Palin was but he isn't as "provocative" as Palin.

 1996? 1980?
He probably has a shot here whether if he is inevitable or a sacrificial lamb.

He would definitely be in a strong place if Pence doesn't run and the GOP is as powerful or as popular as ever. When did that ever happen, though?

He seems to be talked about less than Pence, Haley, Hawley and Trump's kids, so he might be a bit underrated.

This.  He's rightfully seen as a skilled politician in how he is running Florida and as a potential future president.  However, there is a lot of recent history of "governor wonderful" types flopping later in their political careers when they seek federal office, however popular they were previously.  The list is long: Chris Christie, Jeb Bush, Jay Inslee, Steve Bullock, Rick Perry, Tim Pawlenty, Bob McDonnell, Tommy Thompson, Scott Walker, Phil Bredesen.  And even though they still have their Senate seats, Mark Warner and Tim Kaine both got humiliated in 2014/16.
