Title: Secretary of Defense Joe Lieberman?
Post by: Moooooo on December 05, 2005, 10:00:16 AM
Newsmax (http://www.newsmax.com/archives/ic/2005/12/4/141040.shtml):

Quote
That’s the prediction from former New Republic magazine editor Andrew Sullivan, who told NBC’s “Chris Matthews Show” on Sunday: “Before the next congressional elections, Joe Lieberman will be asked to be Secretary of Defense to succeed Don Rumsfeld.”

“That’s the back story behind Lieberman’s amazing defense of the administration this week,” Sullivan insisted.

Face The Nation host Bob Scheiffer, claimed he has sources saying the same thing. From the transcript (http://www.cbsnews.com/htdocs/pdf/face_120405.pdf).

Quote
Last night–over this weekend, I had four different people tell me that the White House is thinking if the secretary of Defense goes over the next year–and a lot of people think that he will, that the president is thinking of nominating Joe Lieberman to be secretary of Defense.

If the rumors turn out to be true and Lieberman accepted the position Gov. Jodi Rell would have a chance to appoint a senator to fill his seat.  It would also boost the Presidents approval for reaching across the aisle.

I would love to replace Lieberman with Richard Blumenthal in the Senate. It would definitely strengthen the Democratic caucus.

His name was mentioned for that postion or another one last year.  I wouldn't mind if he was nominated after losing his re-election.  However, I would not want to remove him from the Senate right now.  He's one of the more rational Senators around.

Can you blame him? Jodi Rell is one of the 3 most popular governors in the country. I wouldn't want to run against her, either.

i would love to have lieverman in the cabinet, but i don think itll happen.

We can hope. You never know.

i dont think joe will do it because i would mean republicans would gain a seat in the senate.

Only temporarily so it wouldn't be a big deal. Blumenthal would beat any Republican.

Were I Lieberman and Bush offered me the Secretary of Defense post, I'd accept but it would be conditional on Connecticut Governor Jodi Rell appointing a Democrat in my place

Lieberman would be a good replacement if Rumsfeld were to leave.

I sincerely doubt that's a condition Lieberman would have in mind.  He might even be happier to see the GOP gain a Senate seat instead.

If he accepts the appointment Gov. Rell would obviously appoint a Republican.  Someone like Rep. Nancy Johnson (http://www.house.gov/nancyjohnson/).  A liberal/moderate Republican like Chafee who could hold the seat.

Or Rep. Nancy Johnson (http://www.house.gov/nancyjohnson/).  A liberal Republican who could hold the seat in '06 would be ideal for the Republicans.

I doubt any Republican could hold that seat in 2006.

If Lieberman accepts a position in the Bush regime, his credibility is toast.

If Lieberman accepts the Demo-Leftist credibility is shot; he could play a Jean Kirkpatrick roll.

How appealing - being named Sec. of Defense just as the department is cracking under the strain of of Vietnam II.

I heard about this scenario on the Chris Matthews Show, sunday Morning.

I really hope Joe doesn't do it, you don't join a sinking ship. It would make me think twice about voting for him.

The good thing is that there aren't any conservative Republicans left in Connecticut for Rell to appoint if he did go. Shays and Johnson are probably equal in ideology to the Blue Dog Dems, maybe further left on social issues, and Simmons doesn't have the experience plus he's in a swing district.

I really like Liebermann, and I think I'd rather have him in the Senate trying to talk sense to the Dems for an indefinite amount of time than in the DoD for 3 years.

I like the sounds of Sec. Lieberman, Sen. Shays and Rep. Farrell.  I hope it happens.

I like the sounds of Sec. Lieberman, Sen. Shays and Rep. Farrell.

I assume then that you are in favor of the Republicans keeping their Senate majority?

I'd rather have a Senate full of Snowes, Chaffees and Shayses than Boxers, Schumers and Corzines.
