Title: Trump vs. Clinton in 1980
Post by: 538Electoral on August 24, 2019, 01:03:03 AM
I know both would've been 1 year too young. But imagine both were born a year earlier and both ran in 1980 on exactly the same positions they did in 2016 and Carter being as unpopular as he was didn't run for re-election and Anderson didn't run. What do you guys think the map would've looked like?

Trump 343 Electoral Votes, 52.4%
Clinton 195 Electoral votes, 46.2%

Not nearly as big a victory as Reagan but I still believe Trump wins comfortably.

Being pro Russia would guarantee anyone a loss back then

Wait a minute. Trump was still a Democrat in 1980. I would switch California and West Virginia. California was real Republican in 80 and West Virginia was pretty reliably Democrat. On the other hand, McGovern did way better in California than in West Virginia. Privately, I see Trump as a George Wallace Democrat at heart even then.

From about 1948 to 1960, and then again between 1972 and 1984 New York State was really flirting with the Republican Party. I agree that the Democrat Party in the South in the 1980s was a thousand times stronger than it is now; especially, in Governor and Senator races.

using President Elect 1988, with your scenario of the exact same positions (I guess we'll also assume same parties) and both being 5-5-5 (which I know isnt exactly accurate but those are more subjective most of the time)

Closest states include DE (~500 votes difference), WV (~1,500 votes difference) and CA (~40,000 votes difference)

Wasn't Hillary the First Lady of Arkansas in 1980? Or is my memory mistaken?
