Both have drawbacks that I’ve heard personally from people I respect who have lived there - Hawaii can be really hard to break into the business community as an outsider, and SoCal has the obvious sprawl/traffic problem. The flight from Hawaii to other states would just get too old for me, I think.

Also they are by far two of the most scenic states in the country(The Coastline is amazing, the Cascades are amazing the Gorge is extremely scenic, Olympic National Park is amazing, and many other places like Crater Like and Painted Hills).
