Title: 2019-2020 College Basketball Discussion and Pick 'em Thread
Post by: GeorgiaModerate on October 20, 2019, 01:07:59 pm
It seems like the right time to start a thread for the new college basketball season.  The AP preseason rankings will be released tomorrow, and the initial kenpom.com ratings (https://kenpom.com/) are out.  The consensus favorite is Michigan State, which features the expected player of the year, guard Cassius Winston.  But there are a host of other plausible contenders that include usual suspects like Kentucky, Kansas, Duke, and North Carolina, as well as Louisville, Florida, Villanova, and defending champion Virginia.

One of the more intriguing (IMO) teams to watch is Memphis, with former star and NBA great Penny Hardaway in his second season as coach.  They have the nation's top recruiting class (the first time in years it hasn't been Duke or Kentucky) featuring center James Wiseman, who is forecast to be the freshman of the year and possible #1 NBA draft pick.  On paper they have a huge amount of talent and potential, but with a team full of freshmen and a second-year coach, they could finish almost anywhere.

Some people in the college football pick 'em game have expressed interest in having a similar one for basketball.   Post here if you're interested, and also if you're willing to choose the weekly slate of games.  I'll volunteer to keep score.

Preseason Polls tracker since I have yet to see them consolidated anywhere.

America East: 1. Vermont 2. UMBC 3. Stony Brook 4. Albany - Vermont is a heavy favourite but is not expected to compete for an at-large.

American: 1A. Houston 1B. Memphis 3. Cincinnati 4. Wichita State 5. USF 6. UConn 7. Temple 8. SMU 9. UCF 10. Tulsa 11. ECU 12. Tulane - Three very serious Final Four contenders and a highly thought of team returning to prominence in Wichita. Each of the next three will have their chances to make their case, but I think this will ultimately be top-heavy.

Atlantic 10: No poll yet released. Their media day was today? VCU is ranked in the AP poll and Davidson and Dayton are highly regarded enough for at-large consideration. I think the next tier is URI/St. Bonnie's/Saint Louis/Duquesne? 1. VCU 2. Davidson 3. Dayton 4. Rhode Island 5. St. Bonnies 6. Richmond 7. Saint Louis 8. Duquesne 9. George Mason 10. La Salle 11. UMass 12. George Washington 13. St. Joseph's 14. Fordham

ACC: 1. Duke 2. UNC 3. Louisville 4. Virginia 5. Florida State 6. NC State 7. Notre Dame 8. Syracuse 9. Miami 10. Pitt 11. Clemson 12. Georgia Tech 13. Boston College 14. Virginia Tech 15. Wake Forest - Three very serious national title contenders and two ol' reliable teams. The depth of this conference will rely on the next three because the expectations are very low for the bottom half. I am glad the media is hyping Notre Dame's return, but I definitely have some question marks there.

A-Sun: 1. Liberty 2. North Florida 3. Florida Gulf Coast

Big 12: 1. Kansas 2. Baylor 3. Texas Tech 4. Texas 5. West Virginia 6. Oklahoma State 7. Iowa State 8. Oklahoma 9. Kansas State 10. TCU - not my expertise, but is it possible to be underrated Chris Beard still? Baylor has a bit to replace. Top seven could all contend, but likely down to a five bid year.

Big East: 1. Seton Hall 2. Villanova 3. Xavier 4. Marquette 5. Providence 6. Georgetown 7. Creighton 8. Butler 9. St. John's 10. DePaul - Seven contenders hope to get at least six bids and perhaps some wins to improve on last year's epic disappointments.

Big Sky (Coaches): 1. EWU 2. Montana 3. Weber State - The media picked EWU third.

Big South: No poll yet released.

Big Ten: 1. Michigan State 2. Maryland 3. Ohio State 4. Purdue 5. Michigan 6. Wisconsin 7. Illinois 8. Iowa 9. Penn State 10. Indiana 11. Minnesota 12. Rutgers 13. Nebraska 14. Northwestern - My spring forecast flipped Minnesota and Wisconsin - I know Wisconsin tends to find hidden gems, but the loss of Happ is enormous - and slotted Iowa four slots higher. I pegged it as an eight bid league at the time, which feels slightly high. I think Illinois can get it done. I am less certain that Penn State is capable should the Illini fail.

Big West: 1. UC-Irvine 2. UC-Santa Barbara 3. Cal State-Northridge 4. Hawaii

Colonial: 1. Hofstra 2. Charleston 3. Northeastern 4. James Madison 5. Delaware - Hofstra loses their star and plays perhaps too light a schedule. Every game is winnable including UCLA, but I think everyone will take multiple lumps in conference play to prevent an at-large. I see a new winner this year.

C-USA: 1. WKU 2. UTSA 3. Louisiana Tech 4A. UTEP 4B. Old Dominion 6. UAB ---- UTEP returns?! KenPom loves them too. I've awaited this for so long! But the story will be if WKU can compete with higher rated Cincinnati, Arkansas, Belmont and URI in order to build a bubbly resume.

Horizon: 1. Wright State 2. NKU 3. UIC 4. Oakland 5. Green Bay

Ivy: 1. Harvard 2. Penn 3. Yale 4. Princeton - I think they got this right, and I don't think #1 will be particularly close - the Orlando Invitational will be fun to compete against other bubble teams, but I don't think Harvard will leave any doubt. Watch out for Gabe Stefanini and Columbia who could stealthily push for second/third and a coveted spot in Ivy Madness in Cambridge.

MAAC: 1. Iona 2. Rider 3. Quinnipiac 4. Monmouth 5. Manhattan 6. Siena - Really hoping this will be Baker Dunleavy's breakout season at QU! He is surrounded by all the traditional powers (save Niagara) plus recent breakout program, Rider though the coaches see this as a two horse race.

MAC: No poll yet released. Buffalo is once again considered a big favourite.

MEAC: 1. NC Central 2. Bethune-Cookman 3A. Norfolk State 3B. North Carolina A+T - one of the closest votes!

MVC: 1. Missouri State 2. Bradley 3. UNI 4. Loyola (IL) - The Ramblers did bring in a nationally ranked recruiting class but will be very young.

MWC: 1. Utah State 2. San Diego State 3. New Mexico 4. Nevada 5. Boise State - While most feel Utah State is solidly in, SDSU and New Mexico could spend all season long on the bubble if the hype is actually for real this time. Nevada could fight for a spot but nearly fell behind Boise in the poll, so expectations do not involve a return to the Big Dance.

NEC: 1. LIU-Brooklyn 2. Sacred Heart 3. St. Francis (PA)

OVC: 1. Belmont 2. Murray State 3. Jacksonville State 4. Austin Peay 5. UT-Martin - Belmont had a bit of trouble scheduling tough this year but has road trips to BC, Alabama, Saint Louis and WKU plus their home and home with Lipscomb, but this team is every bit as legit as last year's team. Murray and JSU will certainly continue giving them fits so put them on bubble watch immediately!

Pac-12: 1. Oregon 2. Colorado 3. Washington 4. Arizona 5. USC 6. Arizona State 7. Oregon State 8. UCLA 9. Utah 10. Stanford 11. Washington State 12. Cal - Has the turnaround year finally arrived?! The hype says the same thing as I said for the Big 12 - Seven contenders fighting for about five bids though I remain slightly skeptical of Colorado's miraculous growth this quickly.

Patriot: 1. Colgate 2. Bucknell 3. American - Second place may be the most interesting race to watch. Colgate got a national AP vote, and it wasn't an accident!!

SEC: 1. Kentucky 2. Florida 3. LSU 4. Auburn 5. Tennessee 6. Alabama 7. Mississippi State 8. Ole Miss 9. Georgia 10. South Carolina 11. Arkansas 12. Texas A&M 13. Mizzou 14. Vanderbilt - The SEC is so deep that no team would truly surprise me by making the Tournament, and they may push for 8 bids. Isn't Georgia criminally underrated though? No respect for Tom Crean!

SoCon: 1. ETSU 2. UNC-Greensboro 3. Furman 4. Wofford

Southland: 1. New Orleans 2. Sam Houston State 3. Abilene Christian 4. Stephen F. Austin

SWAC: 1. Prairie View A&M 2. Texas Southern 3. Grambling State 4. Alabama State

Summit: 1. North Dakota State 2. South Dakota 3. Oral Roberts 4. Omaha 5. South Dakota State

Sun Belt: 1. South Alabama 2. Georgia Southern 3. Texas-Arlington (average of three media polls)

WCC: 1. Gonzaga 2. St. Mary's 3. BYU 4. Pepperdine 5. Santa Clara - I think we all know how this conference goes by now :)

WAC: 1. New Mexico State 2. Grand Canyon 3. Seattle

Alright! Since no one's stepped up yet, I'll inaugurate the pick 'em.

Rules:
- I'll pick 25 games a week
- Each game equals 1 point, so if you are perfect in a week you will get a total of 25 points
- Tournament picks will be handled separately

I'll post a slate of games every Sunday evening, which will include games that will be played the subsequent Friday through Sunday — staying away from weekday games for now.

n.b. the schedule will start out pretty top-heavy (I'm a Carolina fan and mostly follow the ACC). I'm making a proactive effort to look for interesting matchups in small conferences, but if there's one you think should be highlighted just let me know before Sunday evening.

If you want to get a head start, here's the slate for the first weekend (November 8-10)

Friday, November 8

Me too — I'm following the lead of the CFB pick em and only choosing Friday-Sunday games to make this run on a regular basis, b/c some people don't check the board every day and I don't want to have a tight turnaround for weekly picks. But the donwside of that is missing out on weekday matchups like this one.

Yikes, Illinois.  I’m hoping this is a blessing-in-disguise wake up call before heading out west.  Effort like that at Grand Canyon (I’ve read that place is a very intense gym), and we lose!

What a debut performance by Cole Anthony!

On the other end of the spectrum, the UVA-Syracuse game is painful to watch so far.

EDIT: Under 10 minutes to go in the first half, UVA leads 10-2.  Yes, Syracuse has two points in ten minutes.  Time to turn it off.

Most exciting thing about this time of the season is that you learn about schools that you never knew existed.

Also, did you see Utah beat Mississippi Valley State 143-49?  that's just cold.

Miss. Valley State also lost today to Central Michigan 134-78.  I think we can safely say they're a bad team. ;)

Clearly Kentucky doesn't do well when they are a 25 point favorite.

I know I haven't been making picks (I'll start in conference play), but I'm coming here to note that this was Duke's first home non-conference loss in almost 20 years!  And, the way it happened was insane- kind of like how I always imagined the finish of the first 16-over-1 upset, instead of a 20 point final that lacked any real drama!

A couple of terrific simultaneous games just about wore out the remote: Gonzaga over Oregon by 1 in OT in a game that went down to the wire, while Memphis (minus Wiseman and another starter) nearly blew a 20-point lead but held on to beat NC State.

God is great.

In my bracket, three schools played their way out today, and DePaul is now the last team in.

The player who hit the winning shot for Stephen F. Austin, Nathan Bain, is from the Bahamas and he and his family lost everything to Hurricane Dorian.  A Go Fund Me had been set up by Stephen F. Austin (which can be done under NCAA rules) to help his family and had a kind of paltry $2,000 before the winning shot, it now has $132,000+, mainly driven by people who like seeing Duke lose.

Haha! And LMU where I accidentally selected both. I think it will get more controversial when conference play begins.

I was tempted by ECU, IUPUI Green Bay and Tulsa. The little guys outside of the top 2 in their conferences are a lot tougher to watch in basketball.

Our picks are exactly the same except for Princeton-Bucknell.

Haha! And LMU where I accidentally selected both. I think it will get more controversial when conference play begins.

I was tempted by ECU, IUPUI Green Bay and Tulsa. The little guys outside of the top 2 in their conferences are a lot tougher to watch in basketball.

Glad you mentioned the double-pick.  I saw Southern Utah bolded and put that in the spreadsheet, and didn't notice LMU was also bolded.

General note: I try to double-check all entries (I simply missed the double-pick), but if people omit games from their list, or list a game with no teams bolded, that's considered to be no pick unless they correct it.  If anyone finds an incorrect number in the weekly results, let me know and I'll go back and check again.

Thinking about Loyola Marymount, does anyone else remember the crazy teams they had under coach Paul Westhead in the late 80's and early 90's?  Those have to be the most entertaining teams I've ever seen in 50+ years of watching college basketball.  Westhead recruited excellent shooters and got them into top physical condition.  Their philosophy was to run at top speed the whole game and shoot 3-pointers as quickly as possible; defense was an afterthought.  They typically scored well over 100 a game, often in the 140's or 150's, and I recall one game where they scored over 180.

They're most famous for the 1989-1990 season, featuring stars Hank Gathers and Bo Kimble, which was marred by Gathers's tragic death after collapsing during the WCC tournament.  That team went to the Elite Eight, losing to eventual champion UNLV.  During the tournament they beat defending national champion Michigan, who tried to run with them but lost 149-115.  IIRC Michigan shot over 60% for the game, outrebounded LMU by 30...and still lost by 34!

That season also featured a nationally televised game with LSU, which had star Chris Jackson and a 17-year-old freshman named Shaquille O'Neal.  LSU was one of the few teams athletic enough to keep up with LMU and won 148-141 in OT, in what has to be the most fun game I've ever watched.  Replays come up occasionally on the SEC network, and are worth catching.

Here's an article about that team and their style: https://www.usatoday.com/story/sports/ncaab/2015/03/05/loyola-marymount-hank-gathers-death-25-years-bo-kimble-paul-westhead/24447175/.

Almost, but not quite, a Sportscenter moment: Illinois gradually claws back from 27 down against Miami...has the ball down 1 with the shot clock off...player drives for the potential winning shot...and commits a charge (a blatant charge, not a ticky-tack call).

^ Lost faith in our coaching staff last night ... WTF was that effort coming out of the gate in the first half?!  All the comeback does is show us how talented we are and how good we should be ... also that last play was just pathetic.  That's what we had drawn up?

This team has the pieces, but I am - for the first time - not sold on Underwood being a good hire at all.

Virginia is absolutely garbage (compared to the standard they have set for themselves). I don't see how they could be considered a top 25 team when there is no talent on the roster, just a system defense. I had them 27th entering the day. They'll be fine by virtue of a soft conference. Highly reminiscent of last year's Villanova.

Seeing UCLA-Notre Dame on the schedule will always remind of this game (https://www.sportingnews.com/us/ncaa-basketball/news/notre-dame-upset-ucla-88-game-winning-streak-anniversary-college-basketball/5ekvt3dod93s1en5l6o8t4io9) that I watched on live TV.  The Irish broke UCLA and Bill Walton's record 88-game winning streak.  The Bruins led 70-59 with a little over 3 minutes left, but Notre Dame scored the last 12 points of the game to win 71-70 -- and that was before there was a shot clock or 3-pointer!

Oddly, Notre Dame "book-ended" that streak.  They were also the last team to beat UCLA before it started.

Digger is a wimp! That's gonna be quite a duo calling this game. Neither is even within the first 25 teams out of the tournament so it's time to pull out all the gimmicks. Appreciate the history tales from a firsthand source as always! I should have had you write about the Princeton-Rutgers game.

As far as modern history, I was extremely triggered by this article entitled Notre Dame's Move To The ACC A Monster Blow For Big East Basketball (https://www.sbnation.com/2012/9/12/3320548/notre-dame-acc-conference-realignment-big-east-basketball). It's crazy how much more often realignment damages the team leaving than the beautiful conference even while they still have iconic coaches. I still wish to welcome back Notre Dame (and Syracuse) with open arms to form a real power conference. Hopefully a quick UConn resurgence gives them inspiration.

At halftime of Illinois-Michigan, Illinois has committed only three fouls, which looks pretty impressive...until you look at Michigan's ONE foul (and that one came with about 2 minutes left; it looked like they might get to halftime unscathed).  I don't think I've ever seen a game with so few fouls.

North Carolina (without an injured Cole Anthony) loses at home to Wofford, 68-64.  Oddly enough, two years ago Wofford also won by 4 at UNC.

I can't believe that stat that flashed on the screen - first team to win back-to-back games in Chapel Hill since Georgia Tech 84-85. Really? Duke never accomplished it? I read three times looking for a 'ranked' or 'unranked' qualifier.

Looks like you're right and they're wrong.  According to sports-reference.com, Duke won in Chapel Hill on 3/7/15 (84-77) and then again on 2/17/16 (74-73).

Bart Torvik now has UNC as 11% chance of receiving an NCAA Tournament bid. Insanity. I don't buy that, and another source still has it at 73%, but I think it's definitely between those two, but probably at least 40-50% depending on injury timeframe. They are #95 in the NET Rankings released today, so maybe I am too bullish!

NC State (#50) is simply lucky to have gotten their first Q1 win yesterday. They still have realistic opportunities @Syracuse, @UNC, and vs. Florida State/Duke/Louisville, but the schedule is only slightly more difficult than last year. Four absolutely dreadful wins on there.

NET Rankings Out! Some notables:
#3 San Diego State
#4 Butler
#5 Baylor
#9 Stanford (Similar to Erik Haslam, unsurprisingly)
#10 Dayton
#19 Liberty
#20 Duquesne
#22 Richmond
#43 DePaul

Penn State in the top 25.  Kind of bummed the Illini don't even have a vote in the AP Poll yet (we do have some in the Coaches' Poll), but I guess it's understandable.  Just keep winnin'. :)

On a side note, even though it is for some inexplicable reason on the SEC Network this year, Illinois-Missouri is this Saturday in St. Louis.  To my knowledge, it's one of the very few rivalries in college basketball that uses a Texas-Oklahoma or Florida-Georgia setup with the crowd split 50/50.  It has lost a BIT of its appeal over the last several years, but it is routinely one of my favorite sporting events of the year, and it is a truly unique atmosphere.  I must admit, it's often my "super bowl" of the non-conference, and I'd say it's very likely Missouri is our "biggest rival."

A hilarious look at the Big Ten standings right now (after conference record, I sorted by AP ranking, overall record and then alphabetically):

#15 Michigan State: 1-0 (7-3)

#5 Ohio State: 1-1 (9-1)
#7 Maryland: 1-1 (10-1)
#14 Michigan: 1-1 (8-3)
#23 Penn State: 1-1 (9-2)
Indiana: 1-1 (10-1)
Illinois: 1-1 (8-3)
Iowa: 1-1 (8-3)
Rutgers: 1-1 (8-3)
Purdue: 1-1 (6-4)
Minnesota: 1-1 (5-5)
Wisconsin: 1-1 (5-5)
Nebraska: 1-1 (5-6)

Northwestern: 0-1 (5-4)

No home team has lost a game yet, though I predict that streak to come to an end on Wednesday when MSU visits Northwestern, but ... honestly, who knows??  That game wraps up Big Ten play until the new year, and it would be absolutely hilarious to have every single team tied at 1-1, haha.

In a game I nearly went to in person, Kentucky losses to Utah. Wacky CBB season continues.

Though I am going to the Kentucky/Ohio State and UCLA/UNC double header on Saturday. Considering I've been to every Oklahoma home game this year as well, I may have a shot (pun intended) at a personal record for college basketball games I attend in a single season.

Haslam had Utah by 1! Kenneth was right that the lying media is too stupid to rank teams so they'd rather call this season 'crazy' than admit to being so completely ignorant of the 2018-19 incarnation of certain schools. Kentucky is rightfully ranked outside the top 40 at respectable outlets.

The #1 curse takes down Kansas, which blew it in the last minute and lost to Villanova 56-55.

The Big East's decision to purify will go down as one of the four most morally upright decisions in the history of Western Civilization. The Big East is truly greater than ever before. God has blessed his chosen people too much. Too much blessings! I can't take it any more!

DePaul never makes it easy!! Finish non-conference play at 12-1. The 7-11 conference forecast would likely leave them just off the bubble without 2 BET wins. I think they need 8, but Iowa, TTU, and Minnesota wins all keep looking better.

St. John's is even more surprising with the lead over Arizona at the half. Could be yet another undefeated Saturday for the Big East which is very difficult to believe. I don't even mind not taking this one though when Zona inevitably makes it a game.

I will now accept my accolades. Losing at JPJ? OUCH!

Will San Diego State jump to #1 next week?

Warren Nolan took until this late hour to publish the new official NET rankings. San Diego State did take the top spot there, and it wasn't particularly close since Kansas tumbled to #7. Only the failed media are keeping San Diego State out of the top 5  since analytics love them and the results validate it.

I think Villanova will more likely lose to Creighton than Marquette in their next two. Should be 3 point dogs in both, but if we steal one, Marquette looks easier to shut down. Creighton has better guards and a much better home court advantage. Of course, we could just lose both! I've never loved the Big East more than this season. Every game is close to a toss-up.

So, Jay Wright has elected the option to get swept on this road trip :) The ticky tack first half officiating prevented this from being an interesting game by preventing Saddiq Bey, Markus Howard and Sacar Anim from playing large chunks of this game. And when all three went out, they finally decided to let the game be free flowing and enjoyable! The only problem is that left us without many offensive weapons, and Marquette's stellar defense turned it into no offense - great effort! Jay Wright better realize soon that Collin Gillespie is not a starting point guard for any respectable team and make Justin Moore the starter. Gillespie's defense will not hold up against serious competition.

DePaul's first two Big East games have been by far had the highest quality of play of the first nine Big East games. Devastating to come out of this 0-2. Absolutely heartbreaking today. They'll start winning soon, but I am getting concerned. The next four game stretch is brutal, so if they can't start it with a win in Madison Square Garden, things may start sinking for such a talented team and fast.

Power Rankings
Tier 1
1. Butler - They have a lot to learn about finishing, but I went into the conference season thinking they were a tad overrated. That is no longer the case. This team could win 13-14 games and deserves to be in the Final Four discussion. Blech.
2. Seton Hall - To think they are playing without MAMU! I think the defense is sneakily even better than Butler (and that's Butler's calling card!) The offense is a bit too chaotic.
Tier 2
3. Creighton - Clearly the best (only?) offense in the conference. I question whether they can win away from Omaha limiting their potential to perhaps an 11-7 team.
Tier 3
4. DePaul - I have some depth concerns, and I think they will struggle against very structured and coached teams like Villanova, Butler and perhaps Xavier whether there is a talent advantage or not. The chaotic style is fun but not build to win championships.
5. Providence - I went into the year thinking they had the most talent and most veteran talent. I don't know why it took so long to finally begin to show it - I thought having transfers practicing for a year would make for a smooth transition. Their shooting percentage has still been woeful, but they look a bit faster to the ball showing a sense of urgency...finally. You don't know exactly who is going to beat you on any given night, but Diallo, Duke and Watson all need more consistency if this team wants to finish in the top half.
6. Villanova - No defense whatsoever. No senior leaders. Only Swider, Bey and Moore are natural shooting threats. Very impressed with development of Samuels but he doesn't fit into the offense. Winning largely depends on the other team taking bad, quick shots.
7. Marquette - Very average on aggregate at just about everything. They can defend against smaller teams, and the offense is even streakier and focused on a single player than Seton Hall.
8. Xavier - The next week is going to be very telling given that they will have #2 and #3 in Cintas. You have to think they need to take at least one to build some semblance of a resume. The bench is a little thin, but they seem like they will grind out more than a few low-scoring games.
Tier 4
9. St. John's - Long Jumper Figueroa is making strides without Shamorie Ponds there - and he actually plays elite defense unlike the prior focal point of the team! I am still uncertain if this team could be for real or if they can beat any Big East team on the road - we'll find out in the next four days! The schedule starts easy, yet they could easily go 1-8/2-7 on the easier half despite taking the top team to the wire.
10. Georgetown - I was so optimistic. Yurtseven should be first team All Conference. Patrick Ewing keeps getting elite big men and no adequate support for them. Very sad. And now the Oklahoma State road win might mean almost nothing. Should've beat Duke. Shoulda, coulda, woulda had a win worth talking about.

Clemson beats UNC and Duke back to back and they aren't anywhere near a tourney team.  Though in the ACC this year, who knows?

DePaul really has no choice but to wring off three consecutive home wins against Butler, Creighton and St. Johns. Two will keep them in it, but it would be hard to see more than 7 conference wins. Three absolutely heartbreaks already.

It's time to accept that, one year after making history as the first SEC team in more than half a century to go winless in conference, we're going to do just that again.

The SEC losing streak stands at 23 and counting, back to the 2018 SEC Tournament.

LOL! You are actually favoured in the final game of the season by 0.1 vs. South Carolina! Apparently 3% chance of one win or less. 0-18 would be an incredible accomplishment given the (terrible) quality of the SEC this year. You have four home opportunities against terrible teams to avoid it.

Does that take into account Nesmith being shutdown?  Between that and SC beating UK I can't imagine Vandy being a favorite in any system.

I saw somewhere that Big Ten home teams are still 37-6 at home, and one third of those losses are from Northwestern, haha.  So, the other 13 teams are 36-4 in B1G play, with these being the only road victories:

Illinois winning at Wisconsin
Rutgers winning at Nebraska
Wisconsin winning at #5 Ohio State
Wisconsin winning at #20 Penn State

Ironically, those three teams (UI, RU and UW) are tied for second place, one game out of first right now. :)  Though Big Ten fans are obviously the best in the nation in my mind (I believe we've led the nation in attendance for like 40 straight years?), this stat is likely - and unfortunately - indicative of how absolutely atrocious the refereeing has been in favor of home teams.

I agree.  After the close loss at Auburn, I expected to win 4-5 SEC games, but Nesmith's injury drastically changes things.

Terrific comeback by Dayton on the road.  They were down 13 in the 2nd half, came back to force OT, fell behind again, and hit a 3-pointer with 0.1 left in OT to win by 2.  Obi Toppin is a heck of a player.

As if this season couldn't get any worse, against our biggest rivals tonight, we lost our 1,080 game streak of making a 3-pointer, dating back to the introduction of the 3 point line.  We went 0-25 from the line and have now lost 24 straight SEC games, including the SEC Tournament.

Now, UNLV and Princeton are the last two schools that have made at least one 3 in every game since the introduction of the 3 point line.

Both Oklahoma and UNLV get epic home wins. With the Lakers also winning, a personal 3-0 on the day.

5 top 25 teams go down today to unranked teams or something like that.

Also Boise State rallies from 18 down with 3 mins left to beat Utah State.

Oklahoma's Q1 record is going to look dreadful by season end at this rate. Huge missed opportunity. I'm not sure a respectable Q2 record will make up for 10-12 Q1 losses, but Mississippi State is going to be a must-win.

So, how many bids will the Big 10 get?  I've seen brackets that have them with 12 right now.  I think by law a conference with "10" in the conference name should only be able to get 10 bids max.  Ohio St. is fading badly but it's hard to tell the rest apart.

Ohio State is miraculously not even going to miss the tournament even at 7-13, or so it appears based on NET forecasting. They are still a 6/7 seed in spite of all this and the awful Q1 record because the efficiency numbers have held up their NET. Sorry for letting you guys down earlier this year :(

Michigan is the likelier candidate to be held out (in spite of the superior Gonzaga win!) and has dropped to 9/10 seed territory due to their similar skid. Also have to assume Purdue is out - that scary schedule is more of a curse than a blessing in the race to stay more than a game over .500.

I think 9.5 or slightly fewer feels like the safe projection. Minnesota could be in a heap of trouble with a loss this weekend. As could tOSU if it gets really bad. Disappointed that Indiana appears to be on track now in spite of the minefield in front of them.

Guess the SEC and ACC benefit from this when the A-10 bubble takes bad losses.
