Serving as the 65th governor of Virginia from 1986 to 1990, he was later succeeded by Douglas Wilder.

It seems like all of these former officeholders are dropping like flies. I learned that Ken Rothman and Richard Stone died this year. Let's not forget guys like Fritz Hollings and Richard Lugar.

If only Dukakis had put him on his 1988 ticket.

Virginia was an afterthought then, but the victories of guys like Baliles and Wilder signaled the beginning of demographic patterns that would make Virginia the first Lean D Southern state since 1960.
