I seriously doubt that Arkansas, West Virginia, and Kentucky would’ve voted for a Democrat in 2008, even a southern one.

Fmr. Mayor Rudy Giuliani (R-NY) / Governor Sarah Palin (R-AK)
Fmr. Governor Mark Warner (D-VA) / Governor Kathleen Sebelius (D-KS) ✓

Reduced religious right turnout and a Democrat who excites the base/youth/Netroots types while not alienating racists? Big win.
