So the Liberals are winning again in Canada? That's a damn shame. I grew up in Upstate New York and used to love visiting that country. But since Chretien became Prime Minister (now Martin) and they turned into a bastion of anti-US sentiment, I have engaged in a total boycott and have not been back since. If and when the Conservatives ever win power again, maybe I'll return, but I doubt it.

Well, it looks like the Liberals will win then.  I'd say the key was that voters didn't care much about the sponsorship scandal, and were more concerned about how Mr. Harper was too conservative on Charter issues.  Wait, what the hell am I talking about?

Why are you yaying? The Conservatives are losing all of thier moderate MPs! PC is vanishing before our eyes. All that will be left are those hicks from Alberta.

That is probably how the moderate Democrats in the U.S. felt in 1994 when the Republicans wiped out most of the Dem moderates, especially in the South, and left the party dominated by NDPleft-wing nutcases from safe leftist urban districts. Note how the Dems haven't won back control of the House in 4 elections since then? You have my sympathy, Beaver. :)

And on a Modified note: how will the presence of the anti-American leftist NDP in the government affect U.S.-Canadian relations? I predict things will get even chillier...

Well, it looks like the Liberals will win then.  I'd say the key was that voters didn't care much about the sponsorship scandal, and were more concerned about how Mr. Harper was too conservative on Charter issues.  Wait, what the hell am I talking about?

Oh well, forget Canada.  It is a silly place.

John Ford,

It IS a silly place, but it wasn't always like that. In the 1970's and 1980's this was a wonderful country to visit. It's such a shame what it has become. They have gone from being America's little brother to being Europe's retarded cousin all over the course of two generations...so sad.

And now he's switching from language to language... even though the NDP got like 5 votes in Quebec...
Quebec is not the only place that has francophones in Canada.  The NDP did win the Acadie-Bathurst riding in New Brunswick on the Quebec border.

Noticed the Liberal-NDP combined number now sits at 155...

If I were Harper...I'd continue in a semi-campaign mode...keep the lines open to the BQ and see if they can eventually (at a good time for both) force a new election.

Especially if the supposed coalition number falls behind the post.

Barring any reversals on recount, 155+ for the LPC/NDP combination looks firm.  The CBC website shows 154 firm ridingsright now and at least one of the others, Western Arctcic is a firm tossup between the LPC and the NDP.  Still this is a parliament that could be brought down by a by-election or two even if the LPC and NDP don't want it.

All it takes is one important bill (Clark learned that in 1979). The Liberals are a centrist party for Canada.

Harper should continue to tour the country in quasi campaign mode...wait for something like a budget or regional devolution bill to come up...and try to siphon off some of the more conservative liberals...just enough to convince Martin he needs to hold another election.

Actually the NDP/LPC Coalition is exactly at 155 seats because the Liberals need to nominate a speaker of the house who does not vote unless there is a tie. Also, if martin is implicated in the Adscam and sponsorship scandals when the report is released we may see the NDP rethink it's posistion on an informal government. I don't think even then the NDP would stand in the way of a no confidence vote.

And now for the bad news. The CPC has swept Saskatchewan as a result of the Child Porn slur. Proctor and Nystrom lost by a handful of votes each.
They go down as heros.

Does the speaker need to be a sitting member of the house though?

In the US house, techicnally he does not...remember something about this when dingell gave up his seat.

Don't forget that the Conservatives and the other parties might wear down the liberals already tenuous hold on the Commons if they can win any By-elections that might result between now and the next election.

Nathen Cullen has taken Skeena-Bulkley Valley! Yeeesssssss!!!!!!!!!

There's a really, really tight race in Vancouver Island North: incumbent CPC MP John Duncan (who had been expected to walk re-election) is leading by just 26 votes with 4 polls to come in.

And in New Westminster-Coquitlam where a Dipper challenger leads the CPC incumbent by 75 votes with a few polls left to close

And technically as long as he reaches 155, it doesn't matter

308/2=154
Since 155 is 50% +1 seat

The Opposition tops out at 153

so the speaker doesn't vote.

Straight coalition line votes...
154-153, 1 present.

But things could change if the Sponsorship Scandal actually implicates Paul Martin. If it does, All bets are off as the Conservatives and the Bloc would introduce a motion of no confidence. Such a measure would make Jack Layton think twice about supporting Martin.

Popular vote numbers tell the tale
Last Updated Tue, 29 Jun 2004 02:44:58 EDT
TORONTO - Predictions that voters would desert the Liberals in droves over the sponsorship scandal were proven wrong on election night, judging by the popular vote numbers.

Though Paul Martin's party lost 41 seats compared to its showing in the 2000 election, picking up 135 seats this time, voter support dropped by only four percentage points. About 37 per cent of Canadians who voted today cast ballots for the Liberals, compared to almost 41 per cent four years ago.

By comparison, the united-right Conservatives won the support of about 30 per cent of voters, compared to the 37.8 per cent who voted for either the Alliance or the Progressive Conservatives in 2000. That's down eight percentage points, though the party earned 99 seats.

The New Democratic Party was the big winner of the night in terms of popular vote. Its number rose seven percentage points, to more than 15 per cent in 2004, as it took 19 seats.

The Bloc Québécois gained 22 seats for a total of 54 as its support rose by 2 percentage points.

The Green Party of Canada pulled down 3.5 per cent of the popular vote, attracting the votes of more than half a million Canadians, making it eligible for annual funding from the federal government.

The Liberals may be Center-Left but they also want to govern, they'll work with the NDP.

And Canada has only gotten better since the 1970s. Outside of those dark days of Mulrooney. Besides, I'm Canadian, I think I'd know, and so would my family if things had become terrible.

Depends when it's called... if Martin calls another one soon and wins a majority it'll be bye-bye Harper.

Martin was PM before the election. He's just been re-elected. M.P stands for Member of Parliament.

Current results:

LIB:   33
CON: 19
BQ:     5
NDP:   5
OTH:   0

LIB:    42.00%
CON:  29.81%
BQ:       3.07%
NDP:   21.18%
OTH:     3.94%

I never noticed it before, but the province of Ontario looks remarkably like a fish jumping out of the water.  Hmm, maybe there is a hidden meaning in it.

Interesting trend for you all to ponder: the Dippers did well out in the boondacks... even in ridings they were not targeting.
Take a look at these examples:

In Madawaska-Restigouche, NB the NDP came second with 27.5% of the vote

In Prince George-Peace River, BC they came second with 20% of the vote

These are the sort of ridings that it was assumed that "Jack wouldn't play well" and neither were targeted at all.

The BQ and the CPC are unlikely to co-operate in Opposition. It's not in either parties interest to do so.

It's odd to see that the leader under the most pressure now is Harper... who'd of though that 2 weeks ago?

But it is in their combined interest to give the government all the headaches they can.

If the liberals try throwing a bill at the commons that deals with provincial powers or some budget that throws too much money Ontario's way...and they could be in for some trouble.
