Title: CNN: The news channel for people who have never looked at a map
Post by: Joe Republic on June 23, 2007, 07:31:43 AM
Does anybody remember when I had these two screencaps from CNN in my signature?:

()

()

Well now it seems they've done it again.  Just to illustrate how much the war in Afghanistan has been forgotten, CNN has now shown that they can't even remember where the damn place is any more:

()

This should be news for the people of Syria.

So between FOX's convenient attributions of corruption and sex scandals to Democrats instead of the Republicans who actually committed them, and CNN's almost total ineptitude with basic geography, it looks like the American media is still going from strength to strength.

That's one huge France!

()

Why is it that CNN always gets either the Czech Republic or its neighbors wrong?

()

I think residents of Cardiff would object to that one...

()

CNN's geography problems aren't limited to Europe, either... apparently Ottawa is now on Lake Ontario...

CNN uses google earth for their maps.

I doubt the legitimacy of that photo, as I watch CNN, they use google earth, and don't overlay their fonts or text on a map anymore. If that was supposed to be recent, I'd say its fake.

For the France one, that too would be google earth to blame, probably because of poor loading. As for the others, those can be real.

Was channel flipping last night and saw Sen. Pryor's photo on CNN (Anderson Cooper) with the allegation that he was a Senator from Arizona.

LOL,

Well, I wonder if we could arrange a swap.  I'd be more than happy to trade Pryor for McVain.

France is definitely screwed up. Toulouse is not southeast of Paris, and Lille is not northwest either. They really need a graphic artist who can read a map before overlaying anything.

Anchorage's local CBS affiliate, their night time news program has atrocious spelling capabilities. Maybe them and CNN could join forces for a very bad news program. :P

Even if we went with your bizarre assumption about Google Earth being to blame, you don't think it's important that anybody at CNN's graphics department or editorial staff wouldn't take one look at that map and think, "uh, that just looks plain wrong"?

He managed to get himself pseudo-famous for 5 minutes by helping to get a fake Tea Party candidate onto the ballot in NJ-03 last year.

Quote from: http://michellemalkin.com/2010/07/20/reports-dems-polluting-tea-party-in-new-jersey/
Asked through a Facebook message last Thursday about his signature on the petition, [MAS] wrote: “Yes, I signed that petition. I did so with regret because I was very disappointed in the Congressman’s (Adler’s) vote on health care.”

Runyan campaign adviser Russell responded: “That’s the most ridiculous, dishonest political spin I’ve ever heard. [MAS] is a professional political operative. He’s paid to run campaigns.”

Ridiculous and dishonest are certainly two descriptions for MAS117.

Yeah, MAS and I are cool but I love laughing at this one over and over and over again. Congressman Runyan thanks him!

The best part is MAS' logic: he was "mad" at the now late Congressman for voting against the healthcare proposal...so he signed the petition of someone who was supposed to be even further right on the issue. Good one.

While I don't doubt that MAS was upset with the vote, he wouldn't be that mad with Adler anyway. They were friends. So he was not only caught doing something stupid but decided to make an even more ridiculous excuse that could be easily uncovered.

First time I've looked at this thread, and the maps are hilarious.  I don't have any links to ridiculous maps.  But I do remember once reading a CNN story back when I lived in Tokyo, and where the story mentioned Japan, the name of the country was hyperlinked.  I clicked on the link, and a map popped up identifying Japan.  Thankfully, the map was at least right, but I sat there wondering why the online editor felt it was necessary to remind readers where Japan was...  I understand now; they were not reminding readers, they were reminding themselves  :)

Are they even trying? Who would look at that map and think that it conveys any useful information?

Looks like the intern who made the map plotted the data including the dollar sign in front: at that point the map software interprets the number as a string instead of a number. Then the program keeps changing colour to resolve the problem of there being more labels than available colours in the swatch.

I redefined the data and improved the map if anyone cares. (https://datawrapper.de/chart/w0UtJ/publish)

I know that the forum will appreciate this crime against cartography (http://www.newrepublic.com/article/119011/map-how-much-24-states-lost-refusing-expand-medicaid) from The New Republic:

Update: I adjusted my zoom level in an attempt to take a better screenshot and the colors changed! What the hell is going on here?

The New Republic proudly announces the hiring of Mr. Pbrower as its map design specialist. He will enjoy a full salary and benefits, including dental and on-demand access to cat drugs.

Well now it seems they've done it again.  Just to illustrate how much the war in Afghanistan has been forgotten, CNN has now shown that they can't even remember where the damn place is any more:

()

This should be news for the people of Syria.

More like eerie prophecy now.

These aren't as bad, though. They Utah does border Nevada, and Vermont does border New Hampshire. They probably just colored in the wrong state by mistake.

As opposed to all these other examples of coloring in the wrong states deliberately, you mean?
