Today, Monday, is the first day of the Rasmussen Reports Election 2008 Presidential Tracking Poll. This data will be updated daily, Monday through Friday, to keep you posted on the latest numbers in the race for the White House. New results will be posted each day by noon Eastern for the Republican and Democratic Presidential Nomination competitions along with general election match-ups, state polls, and information on the issues that drive the campaign. The tracking poll will be expanded to seven days a week before the calendar turns to 2008.

The latest Rasmussen Reports national telephone survey of the race for the Republican Presidential nomination shows Fred Thompson at 23%, Rudy Giuliani at 22%, Mitt Romney at 13% and John McCain at 11%. Mike Huckabee is favored by 4% and five other candidates split 5% of the vote. McCain’s slide may have halted for the moment. Today’s numbers show that 45% of likely voters nationally have a favorable opinion of him while 46% hold an unfavorable view. That’s little changed from last week when 44% have a favorable view of the Arizona Senator. However, last week’s numbers were the lowest ever recorded for McCain.

Today’s results show Giuliani viewed favorably by 52%, down a point from last week. Thompson earns favorable reviews from 44% while 31% offer a negative assessment. Those numbers are down slightly from the end of June.

In the race for the Democratic Presidential nomination, New York Senator Hillary Clinton continues on top, leading Illinois Senator Barack Obama 37% to 25%. Former North Carolina Senator John Edwards remains in third place with 13%. Bill Richardson, Joe Biden, and Dennis Kucinich each attract 2% of the vote. Data released this weekend showed that Clinton’s favorables are up a bit. New numbers out today show that Biden is viewed favorably by 32% and unfavorably by 38%.
