Title: Counties you have been to that no other Atlasian has
Post by: they don't love you like i love you on August 19, 2007, 02:00:37 PM
Here are some guesses for me in Minnesota, though snowguy probably has a bunch of these:

Goodhue
Dodge
Lincoln
Lyon
Watonwan
Big Stone
Swift
Chippewa

And some in North Dakota, though MHS probably has some of these, but he hasn't posted in awhile. I bet I'm the only other poster who has been to his old home county of Ward too:

Sioux
Emmons
Sheridan
Wells
Eddy
Foster
Slope
Bowman
Dickey
Lamoure

Can't say if I'm the only Atlasian to have been there, but here are some that I'm certain that no more than one or two of you have been in.

In Georgia, I'll list Baldwin, Ben Hill, Burke, Colquitt, Dougherty, Glascock, Hancock, Irwin, Jefferson, Johnson, Putnam, Telfair, Worth (and possibly Screven save for those old enough to have traveled before I-95).

I've been to every South Carolina county, but I'll only list Saluda, since that's the one I consider least likely for people to have visited, as it's off the Interstate and has nothing touristy there.

In North Carolina, I'll hazard Pamlico and Beaufort counties as possibilities, as I doubt there is anyone else who chose to take a country drive on NC 306 just to go over a couple of ferries.

Here are some guesses for me in Minnesota, though snowguy probably has a bunch of these:

Goodhue I went to college 7 miles away and biked frequently, plus the drive through Red Wing is my favorite alternative to I 94 between Mpls and Chicago.

Dodge MN 56 to US 14 was the back way from Northfield to Rochester.

Watonwan One of my best friends from college lived one county to the west, so MN 60 through this county was the way to get there.

I can remove some from your list. My comments are in italics.

I haven't been to Salem County, and there's no other county in NJ so out of the way that none of you would have been to it. Maybe Somerset or Franklin County, Maine?

There are few places in California where I do not have relatives, and I've made day trips to most of the others. (Although even before my second cousin moved to Redding, I had been through Shasta County to Mount Lassen when I was kid.)

I slept in Redding.  What a craphole.  It's on I-5, though, so lots of people have probably been there.

I imagine I'm probably alone on Skamania and Wahkiakum counties, WA.  Maybe Hood River, OR, too?

I've been through Charles as well, taking US 301 to get to Baltimore (where my mother's family is from) while avoiding the mess known as I-95/I-495, since we would normally have hit Washington at rush hour had we stayed on I-95.

I have been there many ways, just to try different scenery. Since I frequently stay in Peoria, I often pass through Stark Co., IL. Anyone been there?

Last weekend I went to the original state capital of IL, Kaskaskia, the only incorporated place in IL west of the Mississippi. It's in Randolph Co, IL, the home of Popeye. Anyone been there?

I'll assume you've been to Decatur, and therefore to Macon County, IL. My "most obscure place in IL" goes to Warrensburg, IL, but it shares a county with Decatur.

Oh, and the Delaware Memorial Bridge is at the north end of Salem County, NJ, so I have actually been there, as probably have a lot of other people. Oh well.

Nope, I got you on those (been to all of them). I have personally been to all the counties in Western Washington & Oregon. Also I have been to out of the rare ones Okanogan, Ferry, Garfield and a number of others in Eastern Oregon and Washington (also a splattering of counties in Idaho and Montana...)

I haven't been through there, but I have been in six NE counties further west: Dawes, Box Butte, Sioux, Scotts Bluff, Banner and Kimball. Kimball's on I-80, but I've used NE 71 and US 385 to go up to Hot Springs, SD.

US-220 to Sayre is the only reason I'd drive the road from Central PA. Syracuse is better reached using I-80 to I-81 and Rochester is better reached by I-80 to I-180 to US-15 to I-86 to I-390. Binghamton is similarly better reached using I-80 to I-81. Elmira is also quicker reached using the I-180 to US-15 route.

Not sure what counties CultureKing has been to, but here are some possibilities for me:

Powell, MT
Lewis and Clark, MT
Flathead, MT
Lake, MT
Cascade, MT
Meagher, MT
Nez Perce, ID
Latah, ID
Yakima, WA
Chelan, WA
Whitman, WA
Klickitat, WA

I know I went on vacation with my family once to somewhere in NE Oregon (from Spokane) but I don't really remember where. It is also possible I went to the Tri-Cities when I was young. I could be missing the Northeastern-most counties in WA and maybe a couple in Montana, as well.

I drove through Essex and Warren (and Clinton) when I went to Montreal a few years ago. Its a very remote area by regional standards. Its the only time in my life I ever used cruise control on my car.

Anybody been to:

Herkimer County, NY
Androscoggin, Maine
Ocean, NJ
Sussex, DE
Wicomio and Worcester, MD
Accomack and Northampton, VA
New Hanover, NC
Beaufort, SC
Monroe, FL

As you can see, I rarely leave the East Coast. I've only been west of the Appalachians 3 times.

I've picked up Schuyler. Allegany, Chenango, Ulster and most of southern NY by travelling along I-86, the Finger Lakes, and Catskills.

I've been to counties in and around Clayton IA, traveling along both sides of the upper Mississippi.

Yes to the above. I've vacationed in Rehoboth Beach, DE and Hilton Head, SC.

I've still not heard any responses to Stark or Randolph, IL.

Baldwin- I've been to Millidgeville several times.
Dougherty- I went to Albany once when I was young, I think.
Johnson- I've got an uncle in Wrightsville.
Putnam- I travel through whenever I go to my grandparents.
Telfair- I've got cousins in McRae. In addition, we pass through Telfair on the route my family usually takes to the beach.

Quote
I've been to every South Carolina county, but I'll only list Saluda, since that's the one I consider least likely for people to have visited, as it's off the Interstate and has nothing touristy there.

I've passed through once, taking US 378 to Colombia.

Ive been to all of the counties in Florida.  There has to be one that nobody's been to, maybe Alachua?

I actually just got home from a trip to Gainesville.

---

I don't know where all in the state Clay and Dibble have travelled, but I'll guess Gilmer, Murray, Oconee, Oglethorpe, Walton and Wheeler.

Only ones I can think of that relatively few other forumites have been to; mostly these are 'go-through-on-car-trips' counties:

DeSoto, FL (although I bet StatesRights has been there)
Hardee, FL (probably there too)
Putnam, FL
Allegheny, MD (although one or more of the Maryland forumites probably came; I've been to Cumberland)
Hampton, SC (on an I-95 traffic detour)
Orange, VA
Possbily Pittsylvania or Page, VA  (although anyone using US-29 south of Lynchburg would hit Pittsylvania and Luray Caverns is in Page).
Custer, SD (some people who've been to Mt. Rushmore have been there, but the border is just south of Mt. Rushmore itself and most people come there from the north. If you've been to Wind Cave, the town of Custer, or a couple of other attractions though, you've been there).

You got Gilmer and Walton right for me.  :)

The counties I've been to that no one else has....Fannin, maybe?

Or even my current home, Dawson County.

I think I've never been to Fannin. Not sure.

Have you ever been to Barrow County, Clay? I've always been curious as to what my hometown is like from the perspective of an outsider.

I'm throwing Essex, NY out there again and possibly Warren, NY

I drove through Essex and Warren (and Clinton) when I went to Montreal a few years ago. Its a very remote area by regional standards. Its the only time in my life I ever used cruise control on my car.

Anybody been to:

Herkimer County, NY
Androscoggin, Maine
Ocean, NJ
Sussex, DE
Wicomio and Worcester, MD
Accomack and Northampton, VA
New Hanover, NC
Beaufort, SC
Monroe, FL

As you can see, I rarely leave the East Coast. I've only been west of the Appalachians 3 times.

I've been to Beaufort, Ocean, Androscoggin (white-water rafting!) and Sussex.

What was your impression of Dawson?  There's not a whole lot here.

Yep, I've been to Winder many times actually.  My sister and brother-in-law used to live there and I'd visit a lot.  I thought it was a nice enough place.  It's been a few years now, but I remember thinking that it seemed like a really small but cool city.  And driving through downtown Winder (I think it was downtown anyway...).  There were a bunch of businesses and restaurants and stuff right off the street and not adequate parking.  But there was this one sandwich and bar type place that was really good.

I also go to Monroe a lot, which I think is like right next to Winder, isn't it?  I'm really not sure, but I know it's pretty close anyway.  And it's real close to Athens too.  But my sister lives there now, as well as my grandparents, so I go quite often.

BTW, Fannin Co is where Blue Ridge is.  It's north GA, bordering with TN.  I have another set of grandparents who live there and I'm up there all the time.

To be honest, I don't remember much of Dawson. It was several years back and my dad decided to take a different route up to Elijay. If I recall, I was actually reading a book through the whole county.

And yeah, there's not much parking in the downtown area at all; though I've heard there's going to be a parking garage built at some point in the future. By the way- sandwich and bar type place in downtown? Loco's, maybe? I love that place.

And Monroe is only 20 minutes down GA 11. I've got several friends down there, and I had some family living there at one point.

I could be wrong, but didn't you live in Dahlonega at one point? That's a nice place.

No, I've never lived in Dahlonega, but it's real close to me.  I used to live in Snellville...all my life really until just a couple years ago...in Gwinnett County.

Lots of places in Sweden, obviously ;) (anything Johan hasn't visited). Has anyone else been to Mauritius, Curacao, Bonair, Marsa Alam or Chengdu?

Has any of the British posters been to, say, Reading? I'm guessing some of the Germans must have been to Münster and Düsseldorf.

What else? Helsinki, Bratislava and Split are places a bit off-ish in countries from which we don't have posters. Riga is another such place.

Indeed I have. Pretty country. I don't know whether I've been anywhere in the United States that nobody else has been to; I've been to some remote counties in eastern Idaho, but they're on the road from Salt Lake City to Yellowstone. Abroad, I don't think anyone else has been to Dhaka, though Lewis might have. Presumably others have been to Singapore; certainly others have been to Hong Kong and Bangkok.

My family has a place in Gillespie County, TX - have to assume someone's been there and surrounding environs..  Let's try some weirder ones...

Union Parish, LA
Sabine Parish, LA
LaSalle Parish, LA (infamous)
(insert northern LA parish - and I don't mean driving through with these either)

Grant, NM
Catron, NM
Hidalgo, NM
(insert southern NM county - and I don't mean driving through either)

I've been to almost all counties in west Texas/Big Bend south and west of Midland/Odessa - let's try Culberson County and Brewster County (who's been to Big Bend).

My east Texas list is pretty impressive too, but I haven't been everyplace.  Chambers County is a bit of an oddity.  How about Shelby County.  Once again, none of this is "driving through".
