Title: OOC Convention
Post by: ilikeverin on November 21, 2007, 06:56:08 PM
Unless Bacon King would like to say otherwise (you are the master, after all), I think we should have an OOC chat about what's what.

For instance, what time is it?  2007?  2057?  1957?  I suggest somewhere around 1980-1990; that way, Bacon won't have to work too hard for foreign affairs events.

Also, how should elections work?  Are we in favor of the idea from Eutopia where half of the seats are distributed in proportion to members' votes and half are the GM's decisions?

Like I said, the final say should be Bacon King's... but maybe one of us will come up with a good idea or two :)

Personally, just from a history writing stand point, it would be easier if this was just after the Cold Water, between 1988 and 1992, since that would make it quite easy to fit the rush to democracy in Antillia with the wider world movement towards democracy and freedom at the end of the Cold War.

I'd say we have a 1 year lag-so that we can still talk with current terminology, of current technologies, and with current ideologies, but so that international affairs have a structure in historic event passage. Maybe even a lag as short as three months.

I like the 1992 idea, seems good.

I'm bumping this whole section... The OOC Convention just seemed the best place to do it.

I like the ideas of either 1990ish or just a single-year lag. Or, even, present day- that way we could respond to real global events as they happen. It's really up to you guys.

The danger of doing it present-day is that we would, inevitably, be working at a very different pace to the present day.

1990 (or thereabouts) is good.

1992 sounds perfect

I like 1990-1992

I do think present-day would be a mistake, but in my opinion 1992 is less practical than 2006, or at least 2002.

I think 1972 would be interesting, as that was the time that decolonization was being completed. The idea of a Cold War policy is also appealing.

Alrighty, time for a decision.

Please select your top TWO preferences from the below list. The top results will then be voted on.

No lag
3-month lag
1-year lag
5-year lag
15-year lag
17-year lag
27-year lag
35-year lag

I would suggest to people, just for my easy of creating a reasonable history for this country, that a year between 1989-1993 is used. This era of a "spring of democracies" which saw the fall of many dictatorial countries would be the most logical time for a country like Antillia to break away from prior dictatorship.

Using STV, the count stands at 4 votes for a 15-year lag, and 3 for 17.

Using STV, the count stands at 4 votes for a 15-year lag, and 3 for 17.

In this poll each selection is equally valued, and it will conclude in roughly 12 hours (24 hours after the vote opened).

I had thought we were using preference voting not STV.  That makes the count, assuming that Colin's comment is treated as a vote for a 15 or 17-year lag, the two values that fit his time frame:

No lag: 0
3-month lag: 0
1-year lag: 3
5-year lag: 1
15-year lag: 4
17-year lag: 7
27-year lag: 3
35-year lag: 1

Unless we get some vote switchers or several new parlimentarians, it looks like we'll have a 17-year lag. making this 1990.

I was not actually voting, as I'm not fully participating in this as of now, though I may in the future. I was just stating my opinion as the man who created Antillia and who is going to be writing a full history for the island, once this question is answered.

17-year lag (meanwhile, in Indiana, a child was born...)
27-year lag

Though I'm not a member of Antillia, per se, I wholeheartedly support the 17 year option.

Actually, because you're the GM who will actually be running this, you probably have veto power over everything :)

Alright. Seeing as there's not really any more debate, I'll go ahead and decree that we'll be having a 17-year lag.
