Title: Life of Brian-Monty Python
Post by: bullmoose88 on February 01, 2008, 02:20:34 PM
What do you guys think? Good thought provoking comedy? Or Blasphemous? Or Both?

The recent dvd release, the 2 disc set not published by Criteron, basically has Idle, Gilliam and Cleese saying at best they lost their faith, and Cleese stating he believed in atheistic (then correcting himself)...humanistic priniciples...

I don't know, but it's a great movie.  Just so long as you don't say Jehovah...

Now let me make this perfectly clear...no one is to throw a stone until I blow this whistle...and I mean that even if he says the word Jehovah!

Awesome thought-provoking comedy and blasphemous, the best of both worlds.

Now I guess the question is, is the movie mocking organized religion and the stupidity of some its most needy followers (as the mostly a-religious Pythons have said), or do the words of the pythons ring hollow and is it attack on the christian faith

Its fairly obvious where I stand on the question (given this thread), but i'm not entirely settled on the matter.

Given the "You're all individuals!" scene, I'm personally going to go with the former.

"You're all individuals!"

"YES, WE'RE ALL INDIVIDUALS!!"

"You're all different!"

"YES, WE'RE ALL DIFFERENT!!"

"I'm not."

"SHHHHHHHHH!"

(Sorry, I can never resist.)

Agreed.  It's not as funny as Holy Grail though.

I like all three, but I think Meaning of Life has some of Python's very very very best skits*

*and unfortunately, some of their worst

Life of Brian is a fantastic comedy, one of my top favourite films.

But I don't think it's blasphemous at all. In fact, Jesus is actually treated with respect in the Sermon on the Mount scene.

What the film does, and does brilliantly, is highlight problems with some of those who are followers of religion - such as in the Sermon on the Mount scene when it's made clear just how easy it is to misunderstand things; or at the scene where the crowd harassing Brian argue amongsht themselves about what's more important the sandal or the gourd - mocking factionalism and how it's easy to get caught up in things which aren't important.

I always thought the most fun was poked at the radical communist groupings of the time and is in part a defence of traditional Britain. As Jas says Jesus is actually treated with respect. I've never felt offended as a Christian by that movie. And I know much more devout people who love it.
