Title: "Mike Huckabee and the Coming Republican Realignment"
Post by: AltWorlder on February 09, 2008, 08:46:06 PM
Insightful article, some good comments. (http://www.dailykos.com/story/2007/11/24/55537/214)
Does it have any bearing on reality, however?

If only he ditched the UnfairTax, I would like him.

BTW, I voted option 2 in the poll.

I wouldn't like being split between a sort of European liberal party and a populist party. I mean, I guess economic issues are more important to me, but I'm also not a big fan of theocracy.

It would be interesting for the Republican and Democratic parties return to their respective 19th century positions, updated for 125 years of history.

Civil War-era or Gilded Age-era? As you well know, there is a large difference.

Assuming Gilded Age, was there really a difference between the Republicans and Democrats? Except for the Cleveland and Bryan wings, the Democratic party was essentially a pro-business, quasi-laissez faire party just like the Republicans.

I wouldn't describe the 19th Century Republicans of either the Civil War/Reconstruction-era or the Gilded Age as laissez faire.  They differed somewhat on which government subsidies needed doing most, but not on the general principle of government action to stimulate the economy.

The principle difference for the Republicans of the two eras is that by the Gilded Age they lost their zeal for social reform.

I'm still really not sure if Huckabee's populism reflects an overall trends or not. The elite of the party isn't too happy with his more"big government" approach., as many may know.
