Title: 1976: President McGovern (D) vs. Governor Reagan (R) Post by: Robespierre's Jaw on March 26, 2008, 08:56:24 PM Unplausible I know, but I just wanted to see what your thoughts are on the matter
In November 1972, South Dakota Senator, George McGovern is surprisingly elected 38th President of the United States defeating incumbent President Richard Nixon. Despite the Eagleton Affair which plagued the McGovern campaign shortly after the Democratic National Convention in Miami, bigger scandals engulfed the Nixon Administration, such as corruption scandals involving Vice President Agnew most prominently the Watergate Scandal. Upon McGovern's inauguration on January 20, 1973, American Soldiers in Vietnam are brought home within 90 days, as promised during the campaign. An unstable peace is also brought to the region, when the McGovern Administration orchestrates a peace treaty signed by both North and South Vietnam. On April 30, 1975 after less than 2 years of unstable peace North Vietnam invades South Vietnam. On the Domestic front, McGovern's economic recovery programs to stimulate the American Economy fail and consequently the Democrats lose control of the House and the Senate for the first time since the Eisenhower Administration. How would this 1976 scenario turn out if these were the tickets? Democratic President George McGovern of South Dakota Vice President Sargent Shriver of Maryland Republican Former Governor Ronald Reagan of California Senator Bob Dole of Kansas Discuss with maps.
