Title: No 9/11
Post by: Psychic Octopus on March 20, 2009, 06:33:04 PM
Let's say the terrorists are caught at the airports by security and never board the planes. It is reported on by the news but only briefly. There is no Twin Towers Disaster, Airplane Crash at Pentagon, and the Plane Doesn't crash in Pennsylvania. It is just a normal day. How does this effect history?

Without 9/11 there is no firm move against Al Qaeda and the Bush admin continues to push on the missile shield the way they were before.  The economy still goes into the garbage and in 2004 a stronger Democratic field runs against him.  My thought is we then see a Hillary Clinton Presidency.

Bush's defeat was almost assured sans 9/11 and the subsequent scare tactics (Vote Bush or WE WILL ALL DIE!!!). His performance was underwhelming until that day and no president who was elected despite losing the popular vote won reelection.

But I think it would be rather difficult for Hillary to run, and much more win, only four years after her husband left office. And let's not forget that many people in the party were still smarting from the 2000 Gore defeat, for which they blamed Bill.

Bush's aggragate approval rating before 9/11 was still hovering around 55%.

Without 9/11, there would have been an equally-catastrophic event, due to no moves being made on terror/Al-Qaeda, etc. If this event happens after election day '04, Bush doesn't win.

Bush tries to go to war with Iraq, but people never support the war. The Republicans don't gain in the 2002 elections. The 4th President who lost the popular vote is another one-termer. Kerry is elected President in 2004.

I think we see a boring Second Bush Term. We get a Democrat in 2008, and he gets Van Buren'd in 2012.

McCain changes parties (which he came close to doing) and wins the Democratic nomination - and the Presidency in 2004.

^This was clearly in the cards until 9/11.
