Title: President Forever 2008 + Primaries: Policy Planks
Post by: RIP Robert H Bork on May 17, 2009, 10:32:53 PM
This is similar to this thread (https://uselectionatlas.org/FORUM/index.php?topic=41602.0), except that it was apparently for a different version, so I decided to start a thread about the 2008 edition.

The actual policy planks can be found here (https://uselectionatlas.org/FORUM/index.php?topic=80815.msg1672116#msg1672116), and in the post immediately after that.

A lot of those are kind of stupid, since they involve more your personal opinions than actual policy, and the far left/far right positions typically only involve rhetoric, not policy.

I wouldn't win my district, but I could win my state:

Abortion
Center: Abortion is not an issue for government intrusion. Oppose government control over abortion. Leave it to the states.

Balanced Budget
Center: Balance lowering the deficit with other priorities. No long-term deficits.

Business Tax
Far-Right: Significantly decrease business taxation.

Education
Center-Right: School vouchers for lower-income students. Privatize failing schools. Charter schools provide competition.

Energy
Center: Renewable and non-renewable energy must be equally researched (particularly nuclear power).

Environment
Center-Left: We need to leave a healthy environment for our children. Work to reduce emissions and harmful toxins. Modified Kyoto.

Gun Control
Center-Right: We should be wary of gun control. The Second Amendment protects the right to bear arms.

Health Care
Center-Left: Universal health care whether public or private. Require health insurance for every child.

Homeland Security
Center-Right: Homeland security is an important priority. Focus on fighting terrorism but also provide disaster relief funding.

Immigration
Center-Right: Illegal immigration is a serious problem. Tighter border security. Reform immigration laws.

Iran
Center-Right: We should prepare to attack Iran but be sure that we have the proper intelligence.

Iraq
Center: We should seek a multilateral solution and bring in the UN/NATO and allies to help rebuild Iraq.

Outsourcing
Center-Left: End some of the tax incentives for companies sending jobs overseas. Support American labor!

Personal Income Tax
Left: Increase income tax for the rich. Reduce slightly for those in lower income bracket.

Same-Sex Marriage
Center: Retain marriage as it is but explore civil unions.

Social Security
Center-Left: Allow a small amount of private investment but keep it regulated.

Unions
Center-Left: Labor Unions provide job security and allow workers to collectively better themselves and be paid a fair wage.

War on Terror
Center-Left: Focus on better foreign policy and cut off terrorist funding, use military force if we must.

Yeah, I also noticed the social security thing. The 'right' stance on Iraq actually sounds more moderate to me than the 'center right' too. Also not a fan of any of the Iran options, really I'd just let the Euros/Israelis deal with it and pretty much maintain the status quo.

Abortion
Left: Keep abortion as it is presently. Safe, legal, and rare. Keep partial-birth abortion legal.

Balanced Budget
Center: Balance lowering the deficit with other priorities. No long-term deficits.

Business Tax
Left: Moderate increase in business taxes.

Education
Left: No school vouchers, large increase to federal funding. Modernize school system with more after-school programs.

Energy
Left: Move towards energy independence focusing mostly on renewable energy sources. Subsidize clean energy.

Environment
Left: The environment and global warming is a major concern. Ratify Kyoto. Increase environmental regulations and pollution cleanup.

Gun Control
Left: We need gun control! Ban certain guns. Require registration/background checks. Gun control protects children.

Health Care
Center-Left: Universal health care whether public or private. Require health insurance for every child.

Homeland Security
Left: If we were more respectful to other nations they would respect us in return.  Reduce security measures and funding.

Immigration
Left: Immigration is great! The more immigrants the better. Just require a criminal record check. Full blanket-amnesty.

Iran
Left: We should deal with Iran through the United Nations.

Iraq
Center: We should seek a multilateral solution and bring in the UN/NATO and allies to help rebuild Iraq.

Outsourcing
Center-Right: Outsourcing is not a problem, it is part of a globalized world and helps America.

Personal Tax
Left: Increase income tax for the rich. Reduce slightly for those in lower income bracket.

Same-Sex Marriage
Center-Left: Same-sex marriage, even if not in name.

Social Security
Left: No to private investment and personal retirement accounts, increase funding.

Unions
Center: Labor demands must be balanced with business concerns.

War on Terror
Left: We should develop an anti-terror strategy with the United Nations to stop economic and social injustice.

My positions are more complex than many of these (see sig) but they give you the general gist of a candidates positions.

Abortion: ban it from fetilization to birth. life in prison without parole or death for violaters.
Balanced Budget: Easy.  Eliminate most government departments except defense and few others.
Business Tax: End most taxes entirely  Taxing kills jobs, business and the economy.
Education:  private religous or home school is preferable but for those who cannot a quality public school run by the local or state government should be sufficent.  It should teach real science, true history and not get into political correctness.  Phys ed and sports should be required for all.  There are too many fatties ruining this country and our health care.
Energy: Drill baby drill.  DUH!
Environment: A complete strawman issue of the left.  The environment takes care of itself.  We should take what we need.  Nature will make more as it always has.  Global warming is a liberal myth and not supported by true science.
Gun Control: There should be no limits on anyones right to own guns of any kind unless they have a criminal violent record.
Health Care: is a responsability not a right.  I should not have to pay because some fat ass ate too many twinkies.
Homeland Security: 100% in support of Bush administration policies.  We need to go back to that.
Immigration: I support legal immigration.  Illegals should be deported immediately. If caught smuggling drugs in they should be shot.
Iran: Give them a choice -- stop developing nukes and threatening Isreal or we will bomb them back to the stone age.  follow thru.
Iraq:  Go back to the McCain plan for the surge.  It was an amazing success and Put pertreus in charge of the whole country.
Outsourcing: Allow it.  It is good for the economy and business.
Personal Tax: End taxes entirely.  If not possible then dramatically reduce taxes on the producing classes -- that is those who have jobs, wealth and own businesses.
Same-Sex Marriage: ban it and I think we might need to consider restoring sodomy laws to the books.  I am not 100 percent sure.  But child molesting is a serious crime.
Social Security: eliminate entirely.
Unions: outlaw them
War on Terror: see my note on Iran

I'd agree with that approach as well as deregulating insurance so people can buy across state lines.

Wow I had some bad ideas.

Abortion: R (Only allow abortion in cases where the mother's life is at risk. Ban partial-birth abortion.)
Balanced Budget: FR (We need to eliminate all debt as quickly as possible. Outlaw deficit spending with a Balanced Budget Amendment.)
Business Tax: FR (Significantly decrease business taxation.)
Education: FR (School vouchers for anyone. Get the federal government out of education completely!)
Energy: R (Coal and oil are our main concerns right now. End dependence on foreign energy. Let private funds research other energy.)
Environment: CR (The environment is important. Find market based solutions to environmental problems.)
Gun Control: R (Gun ownership is constitutionally protected. Protect sportsmen's rights and the Second Amendment.)
Health Care: R (Very limited role for government in health care. Tax credits for personal Health Savings Accounts.)
Homeland Security: L (If we were more respectful to other nations they would respect us in return.  Reduce security measures and funding.)
Immigration: R (Tighten border security with stricter immigration enforcement provisions. Deport illegal immigrants.)
Iran: L (Deal with Iran through the United Nations.)
Iraq: L Withdraw all American troops at once. This was an illegal war of aggression.
Personal Tax: R (Taxes should be flatter and lower. Across-the-board tax cuts.)
Same-Sex Marriage: L (Same-sex marriage is a constitutional right.)
Social Security: FR (Let workers privately invest all retirement payments.)
Unions: C (Labor demands must be balanced with business concerns.)
War on Terror: CL (Focus on better foreign policy and cut off terrorist funding, use military force if we must.)

As fezzy said these aren't great choices (especially Iran, I think we should leave that to europe pretty much), but it's an improvement over earlier installments..

Iran: CL (Diplomacy and economic sanctions should make Iran see things our way.)
Iraq: CL (We have done our job in Iraq. Begin pulling out troops gradually. Set a timeline for full withdrawal.)
Outsourcing: CR (Outsourcing is not a problem, it is part of a globalized world and helps America.)
Personal Tax: R (Taxes should be flatter and lower. Across-the-board tax cuts.)
Same-Sex Marriage: L (Same-sex marriage is a constitutional right.)
Social Security: FR (Let workers privately invest all retirement payments.)

On many of the above issues, however, I can come to rational compromises.  While I am left on abortion rights, for example, I could be amenable to a certain amount of tweaking of the laws governing parental consent, etc.  I wouldn't say that makes me center-left.  More like pragmatic-left.  Does that make sense?

Abortion: Should be banned in all circumstances and treated as first-degree murder.

Balanced Budget: Should be Constitutionally required of every budget a President submits to Congress.  Meanwhile, the President should have the line item veto and should be Constitutionally mandated to use it if Congress adds to the budget in such a way as to render it imbalanced.

Business Tax: Should be eliminated immediately for small and medium sized businesses, and as soon as the deficit is eliminated, for large corporations too. Then, I would favor a Constitutional amendment outlawing any taxation above one percent.

Education: The federal government has no business in education.  The DoE should be eliminated immediately.  Vouchers should be provided to parents who send their children to private, Christian schools.  Homeschooling should be encouraged and supported, rather than persecuted and demonized.

Energy: We should begin drilling immediately in the ANWR, offshore and anywhere there might be oil.  Pipe dreams like wind, solar and biofuels should be abandoned. Strip mining and shale oil should be encouraged. Nuclear power, coal and oil are our future. Federal and state regulation should be severely curtailed.  The free market and public opinion are not only sufficient, but more effective when it comes to encouraging good corporate behavior. Some of the mining operations in my state are very good corporate citizens.

Environment: Global warming is a myth. My note above is applicable here, too.  The EPA should be immediately disbanded and laws that inhibit business growth and job creation should be stricken from the books. Baby seals, spotted owls and snail darters don't matter one damn bit and it absolutely enrages me to think that some morons care more about baby whales than baby humans.  Jobs, people.  That's what matters.

Gun Control: It is the right of all Americans to own firearms.  This right should be jealously guarded and protected. There should be no limit on the kind of weapon a law abiding citizen can own, with the exception of anything of an explosive nature. Grenades? No.  Machine gunes?  Yes.

Health Care: Is a personal responsibility and a priviledge earned through hard work. Indolence should not be rewarded with welfare.  If I had my way, we would end Medicaid, Medicare and Social Security for that matter.  Since such liberty-oriented ideas are presently unpopular, we should try to limit these programs wherever possible. Let's take what we can get until the rest of America wakes up and smells the opium it has been smoking.

Homeland Security: Should remain a cabinet level department.  I favor the right of federal law enforcement to monitor the communications of suspicious persons.  And I hate to say it.  But I support racial profiling in this regard only. If someone is getting on a plane and is wearing a turban or is named Ali Baba (or whatever)...the chances of them being a terrorist are better than if the name is Joe Smith.  Yes, I hate that this means a lot of patriotic, law-abiding Americans of Arab desent and Muslim faith will be inconvenienced.  That grieves me terribly. But it is what it is.  I also think we have, especially since Obama, become waaaaaayyyy too mindless of the Nation of Islam and extremist black groups.  I don't want to believe this has anything to do with what Barrack Hussain Obama learned at Jeremiah Wright's feet...but if the shoe fits...

Immigration: Deport all illegals immediately.  If the INS lacks sufficient personnel, use the military or privatize some of the work.  There should be absolutely NO health care for illegals, including illegal children.  What these people do is nothing more than spit in the eye of foreigners who came here and played by the rules. And hey...all their countries have Socialist Medicine, so they should be in a hurry to get home to their paradise countries anyway.  Ha!

Iran: No country is as important to the security and future prosperity of the United States as Israel.  If Iran makes any kind of threatening move toward Israel, the US should join Israel in attacking Iran and completely wiping out its military infrastructure.

Iraq: We should withdraw immediately.  This was a mistake and we should admit it already.

Outsourcing: American companies would not outsource if we eliminated the Socialist policies that already exist here...and prevent new ones from taking effect.  Scrap the minimum wage, dump oppressive OSHA regulations (which frequently lead to bribery and graft) and above all, stop worshiping those damned trees and spotted owls... and we will see American business always choose to keep jobs here.  Oh...and getting rid of public schools will help, too. The students who graduate from private or homeschool situations are invariably more intelligent, well-read and eager to work than the dummies who come out of government schools.

Personal Tax: Taxation is legalized theft.  And a good case can be made for the fact that, Constitutionally, it's not even legal. The only question I have on personal tax is whether or not this government should make reparations to its citizens.

Same-Sex Marriage: Marriage is a union between one man and one woman.  Homosexuality is a psycho-sexual disorder that leads to bestiality, pedophilia and sado-masochism. We all know that random gay who is a nice guy and seems completely harmless.  But unfortunately, every study I have read by reputable sources indicates that he is the exception to the rule.

Social Security: Should be ended as soon as possible.  Failing that, it should be privatized.

Unions: While a ban on unionization would please me tremendously, I am not sure such a law would be Constitutional...given the right of Americans to freedom of association and assembly.  But every effort should be made to discourage unions and to defeat them.  They encourage workers NOT to work, defend workers who get suspended or fired for using drugs or stealing on the job and  create a sense of entitlement that is 100% antithetical to all that America stands for. And Unions should be investigated vigorously on matters of finance and criminal activity.  Most are (or have been) a front for organized crime, anyway.

War on Terror: I support it wholeheartedly.  I think the war on terror would have a great deal more credibility if we had a President who did not travel the globe, apologizing for "American aggression" and imperialism. Ronald Reagan understood what Teddy Roosevelt meant when he said, "Walk softly and carry a big stick."  This is exactly the approach we need. Appeasement only sends a message of cowardice and lack of conviction.

Abortion
Right: Only allow abortion in cases where the mother's life is at risk. Ban partial-birth abortion.

Balanced Budget
Far-Right: We need to eliminate all debt as quickly as possible. Outlaw deficit spending with a Balanced Budget Amendment.

Business Tax
Far-Right: Significantly decrease business taxation.

Education
Center-Left: Support our public school system. Private school vouchers drain resources from public schools. Increase funding.

Energy
Center-Left: Invest in clean energy and end oil company subsidies. Cut oil use significantly by 2025.

Environment
Center: Balance environmental policies with sound economic policies.

Gun Control
Far-Right: The Second Amendment is not negotiable! No restrictions on firearms!

Health Care
Center-Right: More tax-deductible health costs. Very limited public health services. Give health coverage to uninsured children.

Homeland Security
Far-Left: We do not need to be concerned with homeland security. No Star Wars or infringement on civil liberties!

Immigration
Right: Tighten border security with stricter immigration enforcement provisions. Deport illegal immigrants.

Iran
Far-Left: Iran should be able to develop nuclear technology - they will only use it for peaceful purposes.

Iraq
Left: Withdraw all American troops at once. This was an illegal war of aggression.

Outsourcing
Center-Left: End some of the tax incentives for companies sending jobs overseas. Support American labor!

Personal Tax
Right: Taxes should be flatter and lower. Across-the-board tax cuts.

Same-Sex Marriage
Center-Left: Same-sex marriage, even if not in name.

Social Security
Right: Gradually scale down federal involvement and implement privatization of social security over time.

Unions
Center-Right: Unions are undermining our economy by blackmailing companies to overpay their workers.

War on Terror
Far-Left: Terrorism will be reduced if we stop meddling in other country's affairs. Dramatically change our foreign policy.

I don't really like any of the planks for Health Care. I also think it would be more accurate to describe the FR position on Personal Tax as "eliminate all taxation". Finally, I think the FR position on Social Security is more moderate than the R position, since it implied that you could invest none of your retirement payments whereas it is not clear that the R position would allow you to do that in the long-term.

Explain where in the bloody hell in this list of policies that I have sold out to "Social Communism"?
What that I went from far-left (all out open borders) on immigration to center-left (support of guest workers and enthusiasm for immigration)?
That I went from endorsing a national policy on abortion to a state level policy?
That I went from a neutral position on healthcare to supporting a reduction of federal government involvement in it?
Tell me Obamaisdabest where the f*** Hell I somehow sold out to "Social Communism"?

The mantra of "states' rights", of federalism so-called, does nothing, in itself, to aid individual liberty, which is my main concern with the concept. The Southern states in the 1950s were far less free and less individualistic than the north despite being less centralized.

The time has come for libertarians to stop letting themselves be roped into alliances of convenience with Social Communists (i.e. "states' rights" advocates)  on technicalities. Make them fight for it. You (claim to) believe in personal freedom; they believe in their freedom to deprive it from others. That's not something I want to support, nor I assume do you.

Abortion
Left: Keep abortion as it is presently. Safe, legal, and rare. Keep partial-birth abortion legal.

Balanced Budget
Center-Right: We need to curb spending in order to balance the budget. Respect taxpayers' dollars.

Business Tax
Center: Businesses are taxed the right amount.

Education
Left: No school vouchers, large increase to federal funding. Modernize school system with more after-school programs.

Energy
Left: Move towards energy independence focusing mostly on renewable energy sources. Subsidize clean energy.

Environment
Left: The environment and global warming is a major concern. Ratify Kyoto. Increase environmental regulations and pollution cleanup.

Gun Control
Far-Left: Ban all guns!

Health Care
Center-Left: Universal health care whether public or private. Require health insurance for every child.

Homeland Security
Center: Homeland security is a priority, balance between natural disaster relief and anti-terrorism. Missile Defense is inappropriate.

Immigration
Center-Left: Legal immigration is great. Support guest-worker program for illegals and amnesty.

Iran
Center-Right: We should prepare to attack Iran but be sure that we have the proper intelligence.

Iraq
Center-Left: We have done our job in Iraq. Begin pulling out troops gradually. Set a timeline for full withdrawal.

Outsourcing
Center-Right: Outsourcing is not a problem, it is part of a globalized world and helps America.

Personal Tax
Center-Left: Keep taxes progressive because it is fair and balanced. Exempt the very poor from taxes.

Same-Sex Marriage
Left: Same-sex marriage is a constitutional right.

Social Security
Center-Left: Allow a small amount of private investment but keep it regulated.

Unions
Center: Labor demands must be balanced with business concerns.

War on Terror
Center-Right: We should not hesitate to use military force against terrorism.

Some of the centrist positions are hilariously moderate hero, obviously.

Abortion: Center (Abortion is not an issue for government intrusion. Oppose government control over abortion. Leave it to the states.)

Education: Right (Support school vouchers and charter schools. Reduce federal government's role in education.)

Environment: Center-Right (The environment is important. Find market based solutions to environmental problems.)

Gun Control: Right (Gun ownership is constitutionally protected. Protect sportsmen's rights and the Second Amendment.)

Health Care: Right (Very limited role for government in health care. Tax credits for personal Health Savings Accounts.)

Social Security: Far-Right (Let workers privately invest all retirement payments.)

This ought to be fun to try again.

Abortion: CL (Protect responsible choice. Ban partial-birth abortions except in the case of life of the mother.)
Balanced Budget: CR (We need to curb spending in order to balance the budget. Respect taxpayers' dollars.)
Business Tax: R (Moderate decrease in business taxation.)
Education: CL (Support our public school system. Private school vouchers drain resources from public schools. Increase funding.)
Energy: CL (Invest in clean energy and end oil company subsidies. Cut oil use significantly by 2025.)
Environment: CL (We need to leave a healthy environment for our children. Work to reduce emissions and harmful toxins. Modified Kyoto.)
Gun Control: L (We need gun control! Ban certain guns. Require registration/background checks. Gun control protects children.)
Health Care: CL (Universal health care whether public or private. Require health insurance for every child.)
Homeland Security: L (If we were more respectful to other nations they would respect us in return.  Reduce security measures and funding.)
Immigration: L (Immigration is great! The more immigrants the better. Just require a criminal record check. Full blanket-amnesty.)
Iran: CL (Diplomacy and economic sanctions should make Iran see things our way.)
Iraq: CL (We have done our job in Iraq. Begin pulling out troops gradually. Set a timeline for full withdrawal.)
Outsourcing: CL (End some of the tax incentives for companies sending jobs overseas. Support American labor!)
Personal Tax: C (Leave income tax as it is presently. Keep progressive taxes and remove small hidden taxes like marriage tax.)
Same-Sex Marriage: CL (Same-sex marriage, even if not in name.)
Social Security: C (Keep social security as it is.)
Unions: CR (Unions are undermining our economy by blackmailing companies to overpay their workers.)
War on Terror: FL (Terrorism will be reduced if we stop meddling in other country's affairs. Dramatically change our foreign policy.)

One notch to the right on balanced budget and unions, one left on environment, gun control and outsourcing.  I've got 1R, 2CR, 2C, 9CL, 3L, 1FL.  So much for being a moderate hero...

Certainly not my current district (though that's because the guy's been in office since Nixon and is on the Apporpriations Committee so the voters get stuff more than anything).

Abortion - Centre-Left:

Pro-choice except for in the third trimester unless the mother’s life is in a substantial degree of danger.

Affirmative Action - Centre-Left:

Diversity in all spheres of daily life doesn’t justify quotas but is desirable, fostering intergroup solidarity.

Balanced Budget - Centre-Right:

End the wars, halve other defense-related spending, streamline government programs, and increase taxation.

Business Tax - Far-Right:

Lower these taxes markedly. A strong, vibrant economy is needed for social programs to be sustained.

Campaign Finance Reform - Left:

The campaigns should only get public funds, and receive equal airtime and coverage on a public news network.

Environment - Far-Left:

Promote sustainability, treat animals according to their qualities of personhood, and be good stewards of nature.

Education - Centre-Left:

It is a right, not a privilege. All schools should be worker co-ops. Decentralize more power to the many states.

Energy - Left:

Nationalize and invest in nuclear, phase out coal, and fund research. Let markets pick which renewables prevail.

Gun Control - Centre-Left:

Only allow small arms & light weps to folk who who register, wait, take safety classes, and get a license.

Health Care - Far-Left:

It is a right, not a privilege. Worker co-ops should run the system. Emulate aspects of French or German policy.

Homeland Security - Left:

It should be the responsibility of police and the military. Privacy trumps security. Proliferate all of our ABM tech.

Immigration - Left:

Immigration is culturally healthful. Increase opportunities for guest workers, legal immigration, and “amnesty.”

International Trade - Centre-Left:

Globalization is good but try to negotiate labour and environmental protections. Shelter poorer countries.

Iran - Far Left:

Their regime is undesirable but we should not meddle in their affairs without an invite from Iranians to do so.

Iraq - Left

Apologize for missteps on the ground. Work multilaterally to promote Iraqi development and self-determination.

Military Funding - Left:

Cut it deeply. Train for quality, pay well, and be high-tech. Retain far fewer personnel and close bases abroad.

Military Purpose - Left:

Focus on humanitarian interventions, guarding our territory and abolishing weapons of mass destruction.

Outsourcing - Centre-Right:

It is good for humanity as a whole... but without an adequate social safety net endangers our workers.

Personal Tax - Left:

Increase income taxes in their rates and progressiveness. States can do great things if adequately funded.

Same-Sex Marriage - Left:

It should be recognized by the state and convey benefits equal to those enjoyed by heterosexual married folks.

Social Security - Far-Left:

Do not privatize it. Create a lox-box. We should also eventually implement a social democratic welfare regime.

Terrorism - Left:

Empathize with the enemy, identify underlying causes of extremism, and fight those. Work multilaterally.

Unions - Centre-Left:

Workers should be able to organize, bargain, and strike without being replaced, or decide not to join a union.

<Edited for better compliance with the list of issues and norms provided in the other thread.>

Far-Left (4), Left (10), Centre-Left (7), Centre (0), Centre-Right (2), Right (0), Far-Right (1)

Abortion: FL (Full reproductive rights for women! Only appoint pro-choice judges to Supreme Court and extend abortion rights!)

Balanced Budget: C (Balance lowering the deficit with other priorities. No long-term deficits.)

Business Tax: L (Moderate increase in business taxes.)

Education: L (No school vouchers, large increase to federal funding. Modernize school system with more after-school programs.)

Energy: CL (Invest in clean energy and end oil company subsidies. Cut oil use significantly by 2025.)

Environment: CL (We need to leave a healthy environment for our children. Work to reduce emissions and harmful toxins. Modified Kyoto.)

Gun Control: CR (We should be wary of gun control. The Second Amendment protects the right to bear arms.)

Health Care: FL (We need a completely public health care system! Publicly funded, universal health care insurance. Health care is a right!)[1]

Homeland Security: CL (We must defend ourselves only if attacked. Increase some security, funding for natural disasters. Oppose Patriot Act.)[2]

Immigration: L (Immigration is great! The more immigrants the better. Just require a criminal record check. Full blanket-amnesty.)

Iran: C (Keep diplomatic channels open and use economic sanctions. Go to war as a last resort.)

Iraq: L (Withdraw all American troops at once. This was an illegal war of aggression.)

Outsourcing: L (Remove tax incentives on companies that send jobs overseas to discourage outsourcing. Protect American labor.)

Personal Tax: L (Increase income tax for the rich. Reduce slightly for those in lower income bracket.) [3]

Same-Sex Marriage: FL (Same-sex marriage is a fundamental human right.)

Social Security: C (Keep social security as it is.)

Unions: CL (Labor Unions provide job security and allow workers to collectively better themselves and be paid a fair wage.)

War on Terror: L We should develop an anti-terror strategy with the United Nations to stop economic and social injustice.

[1] I don't believe that health care is necessarily a right, only that UHC is a more sensible health care system than the corporate cluster**** that we have now.

[2] I do support a missile defense system.

[3] I don't support lowering taxes on anyone at this point, rather I would prefer to eliminate all deductions and treat "capital gains" as regular income (taxed progressively). From there, if we want to stimulate consumer spending we can raise the minimum wage.

What's it like living in your fantasy land where the "GUN RYTES" movement doesn't march in lockstep with fascists, survivalists, dipsh[inks]s who idolize George Zimmerman because he got away with shooting a black kid, and lots of other horrendously evil groups?

There are plenty of folks on the actual left that support gun ownership. I support gun ownership because (1) I do not believe that I should not be armed for self-defense when the exact types of people you mention (fascists, racists, etc.) are armed; If the far-right is going to arm itself and use those arms against the far-left (which would be a given in any revolutionary crisis or situation), then I'm going to arm myself and defend myself against them, and I would hope that my comrades on the far-left would do the same.

(2) I really, really don't trust a state that spies on me, organizations that I associate with, and causes that I support with a monopoly on force. I don't trust that government with a monopoly on force, I don't trust it's courts, it's police, or it's army, and if they attempt to liquidate me or others on the left (which they have in the past, be it during the 'Black Scare' against anarchists in the 1880s, the First Red Scare of 1920s, the Second Red Scare of the late 1940s, or the campaign against the Black Panthers in the late 1960s), I'd like to think that there's at least some possibility of resistance to such undemocratic attacks upon personal liberties.

(3) I am a revolutionary socialist, and do not think that, ultimately, socialism will be enacted in a democratic or peaceful fashion. Given that, I think it's a good idea for revolutionary socialists to be armed and prepared for any potential crisis that gives us the opportunity to participate in a revolutionary remaking of society at-large.

Individual pro-gun fanatics don't have any balls. These people constantly post of FreeRepublic and the like about CWII and RAHOWA, but every single time one of them actually acts upon that propaganda, they retreat inward and start screaming about Obama false flags and crisis actors or whatever. Mass leftist revolt is their greatest nightmare; if that ever happens, all they'll do is cower under their bedcovers, occasionally posting upon Freep about how they totally shot 50 commies.

This is laughable for the exact same reason right-wing lunacy about guns being the final defense against liberal tyranny is. You are trying to rise up against the most powerful armed forces on the planet. They have tanks, planes, drones, EVERYTHING. Pea-shooters and old rifles will not save you here. You are going to lose.

Yes, but in the meantime, Trayvon Martin, the Sandy Hook kids, and countless other victims are still very much dead, and the inevitability of the glorious socialist revolution (which we swear is going to happen any day now, really) isn't much comfort when the families of the aforementioned victims know it's still very much possible for more atrocities in the same vein to be committed.

Yeah, except that's never been the case historically. I could point out a ton of examples: the Freikorps in Germany, the Klan during the Civil Rights revolution, armed scabs and company thugs during the 1930s in the US, etc. The far-right will certainly be deputized and used to terrorize and destroy leftist groups if the opportunity presents itself. There's far more proof for what I am asserting than what you are asserting here.

Except that, time and time again, unorganized, guerrilla and militia forces have pushed back and defeated superior military forces. What happened in Vietnam? What about the American Revolution? Without armed slaves in the South, the Union would have had a much harder time of destroying slavery and defeating the Confederacy there, too.

George Zimmerman (a white supremacist) killed Trayvon Martin, not a gun. The Sandy Hook kids were murdered by a mentally ill young man. As the recent mass stabbings show, these kind of events are going to happen, whether guns are involved or not, so long as a large segment of your population suffers from neuroses. The answer to mass shootings is not gun control, it's not more cops, it's more health care. It's ending the barriers on accessing mental healthcare by establishing universal, not-for-profit, free-at-the-point-of-use, single-payer health insurance. As awful and oft-repeated as it is, it really is true that guns don't kill people; people do. And in the case of the United States, disturbed and/or racist (as in the case of Zimmerman) people do.

Latte socialist? That's an awfully big term to throw around at someone you don't actually know. The one who sounds like a 'latte socialist' here is the one apologizing for the present state of affairs and actively going after those of us who actually think that revolutionary socialism is possible and desirable. The fact that I work in fast food and have previously been active in union politics doesn't really back your claim up so much as it shows your ignorance of who it is you are arguing with. I've been out in the streets, I've done actual political work on working class issues; if that's what you deem "latte socialism", then so be it.

Energy: Centre-Left

5 Left
9 Centre-Left

0 Centre-Right
0 Right
0 Far-Right

I'm borderline when it comes to outsourcing. I'm okay with fair trade among similar economies. However, moving jobs overseas in order to get cheap labour is something that should be discouraged. I also wouldn't describe myself as a protectionist. American labour should be strongly supported, but I don't support protectionism as a policy.

I also shifted my position on the environment from centre-left to left. My view on business taxation has also moved, from left to centre-left. I do support a small increase across the board, but I think the primary focus should be on removing loopholes and ensuring that all businesses pay their fair share. I want a policy that incentives growth and innovation at the same time that huge corporations like Wal-Mart are disincentived to support only wealth at the top.

Abortion: Center-Left - Protect responsible choice. Ban partial-birth abortions except in the case of life of the mother.
Balanced Budget: Center - Balance lowering the deficit with other priorities. No long-term deficits.
Business Tax: Far-Right - Significantly decrease business taxation.
Education: Center-Left - Support our public school system. Private school vouchers drain resources from public schools. Increase funding.
Energy: Center-Left - Invest in clean energy and end oil company subsidies. Cut oil use significantly by 2025.
Environment: Center-Left - We need to leave a healthy environment for our children. Work to reduce emissions and harmful toxins. Modified Kyoto.
Gun Control: Center-Left - The right to bear arms, but only responsibly! Ban assault rifles, require registration/background checks.
Health Care: Left - Completely public health care system and include prescription drugs under Medicare. Require health insurance for every child person.
Homeland Security: Center-Left - We must defend ourselves only if attacked. Increase some security, funding for natural disasters. Oppose PATRIOT Act.
Immigration: Center-Left - Legal immigration is great. Support guest-worker program for illegals and amnesty.
Iran: Center-Left - Diplomacy and economic sanctions should make Iran see things our way.
Iraq: Center-Left - We have done our job in Iraq. Begin pulling out troops gradually. Set a timeline for full withdrawal.
Outsourcing: Center-Right - Outsourcing is not a problem, it is part of a globalized world and helps America.
Personal Tax: Left - Increase income tax for the rich. Reduce slightly for those in lower income bracket.
Same-Sex Marriage: Left - Same-sex marriage is a constitutional right.
Social Security: Center - Keep Social Security as it is.
Unions: Left - Labor unions are a worker's best protection against exploitation.
War on Terrorism: Center-Left -  Focus on better foreign policy and cut off terrorist funding, use military force if we must.

Far-Left = 0
Left = 4
Center-Left = 10
Center = 2
Center-Right = 1
Right = 0
Far-Right = 1

assuming I've traveled back to 2008

Abortion: Center-Right
Budget: Center-Right
Business Tax: Not informed enough to make a judgement. Might have a Center-Left attitude after the crash
Education:Center-Right
Energy: Left
Environment: Left
Gun Control: Center
Health Care: Center
Homeland Security: Center
Immigration: Center
Iran: Center-Left
Iraq: Center (the far right position is hilarious) (also with magical hindsight I would shift Center-Right because ISIS)
Outsourcing: Left
Personal Tax: Center-Left
Gay Marriage: Left
Social Security: Center (a bit confused about this one)
Unions: Center-Left
War on Terror: Center-Right

0 FR, 0 R, 4 CR, 6 C, 3 CL, 4 L, 0 FL, 1 completely undecided

Idea:

1 FR is worth -4 points

1 R is worth -2 points

1 CR is worth -1 point

1 CL is worth 1 point

1 L is worth 2 points

1 FL is worth 4 points

with this I would have a score of 7, with 18 being center-left on everything and -18 center-right.

Thus I would be a Democrat-leaning indie.

1the national debt is a transfer payment from the bulk of the population to a small number of extremely rich individuals.
2special snowflake position: nationalize industry, replace business and other forms of taxation with a system structured around surplus value.
3focus on natural gas, geothermal energy, and nuclear power, especially the latter. throw insane amounts of money at developing thorium-based reactors and fusion reactors, etc, etc.
4none of these positions come close to what I would consider workable as an immigration policy. first and foremost, assuming the continuation of a capitalist politico-economic system, I believe that immigrants should be defended against racist or xenophobic attacks and should be given full citizenship rights. I am opposed to the idea of a guest worker program and oppose entirely the concept of 'open borders' which is a utopian fantasy under capitalism and not workable in any real sense until capitalism as a world system is overthrown and replaced by socialism. likewise, in the extant deformed workers states, I would probably not favor 'open borders' in that this would likely lead to the emigration of highly-skilled persons necessary for the construction of a more advanced economic system in said countries and would in all likelihood be in favor of strict controls in order to prevent a general brain-drain.
5the nuclear deal was a massive -up on Iran's part, given that it will likely result in penetration of the region by American imperialism to an even greater extent without some form of opposition on the ground. nevertheless, I support the right of all powers to develop and maintain nuclear arsenals, especially the remaining deformed workers' states of china, north korea, cuba, laos, and vietnam.
6end all offensive operations against ISIS, remove all foreign troops from the region.
7see my entry on immigration. in the here and now, I am opposed to protectionism as an economic policy, as well as the so-called 'free trade' agreements like NAFTA and the TPP, which are in actuality instruments of economic domination by imperialist powers relative to their weaker competitors. ideally, I would favor free trade, and insofar as free trade expands the number of the international proletariat, I am certainly in favor of it. In a socialist context, I would obviously support a state monopoly on trade.
8see 'business taxation.' eliminate all forms of personal taxation in favor of the state requisitioning a portion of surplus value and/or ground rent.
9womb to tomb welfare state

i agree with a lot of your conclusions here actually. in regards to social security i'd support sort of a state-capitalist type set up where the government allows for some 'choices'  (e.g. annuity) but guarantees a certain % return. essentially turning the issue on its head and using 'privatization' to transform the program into more of an explicit pension scheme.

tnf:

balanced budget: i would obviously agree with that critique. in the long run the debt is going to be obviously written down just out of necessity. when and if interest rates go up it will become increasingly difficult to service. especially with the problems of aging population and greater numbers of jobs being lost to automation.

corporate income tax: in terms of business taxation i was thinking more along the lines of abolishing redundant 'corporate income tax' and shifting towards taxing things like land value and dividends more. in any case small businesses and/or cooperatives certainly should not be taxed like multinational corporations.

education: i'm ok with the government allowing for some charter schools and public school choice. although obviously there are issues with fundamentalism and other less savory elements that need to be brought into line by a future state.

energy: 100% agreed there, other than *maybe* fusion which has attracted a lot of cranks obviously.

outsourcing: i'm okay with it if there's some limits, like capital controls to keep foreign speculators and such from buying up our land. of course there are also issues with training and reliability among foreign workers which make it flawed even from a business owner perspective. (also this assumes that energy prices and other costs of globalization will not eventually go up and make that a less viable model...)

same sex marriage: i agree, marriage abolition would be preferable to modern divorce industry and increasingly hilarious debates over things like polygamy.

immigration: not that far off from your pov from the sound of it. do you support a general reduction of immigration levels too?

well ideally i think the economy would be mixed and would consist of large, state-owned and managed industries (the 'commanding heights' of the economy), cooperative industries specializing in consumer goods, and small businesses (for niche markets), at least during the transition period away from capitalist production. in terms of taxation, i agree with you about taxing the land, which would ideally be under common ownership and then the state could just collect ground rent on it based upon the kind of economic activity you were engaging in on it/state enterprises were using it for, etc.

also obviously one thing that would be different would be that everyone would be required to be a union member and the unions would be responsible for finding you work if you were out of a job, managing the shop floor, etc.

Quote
immigration: not that far off from your pov from the sound of it. do you support a general reduction of immigration levels too?

I don't really have an opinion as far as present-day immigration levels are concerned. as I am opposed to the bourgeois state, I don't feel it particularly necessary to give it advice on how to administer labor markets, given that restricting propaganda and agitation to that would be an immense waste of time and effort. demanding open borders is demanding the impossible within capitalism, because the bourgeois state exists to promote capital accumulation within a given geographical territory, and anything which might potentially complicate the ability of the bourgeois state to provide stable conditions for capital accumulation (i.e. mass inflows or outflows of immigrants) is a non-starter for those at the helm of the state.

likewise, demanding immigration controls from a government that depends upon cheap labor is not going to happen anytime soon, or at least, in any effective form. and ultimately, legislation that aims at controlling immigration typically becomes 'anti-terror' legislation or is used to police labor markets by arresting striking workers, busting up unions, etc. you can't win with the bourgeoisie on immigration, so there's no point in advising them on how best to exploit the working class, be it on this side of the rio grande or the other.

Abortion

Center-Left: Protect responsible choice. Ban partial-birth abortions except in the case of life of the mother. (Not really but closest, regulated choice in the first 10 weeks, and in certain scenarios later on in the first trimester of the pregnancy)

Balanced Budgets

Center: Balance lowering the deficit with other priorities. No long-term deficits.

Business Tax

Left: Moderate increase in business taxes.

Education

Left: No school vouchers, large increase to federal funding. Modernize school system with more after-school programs.

Energy

Left: Move towards energy independence focusing mostly on renewable energy sources. Subsidize clean energy.

Environment

Center: Balance environmental policies with sound economic policies. (Policies to help workers and promote economic equality, alongside environmental policies)

Gun Control

Center-Left: The right to bear arms, but only responsibly! Ban assault rifles, require registration/background checks.

Health Care

Far-Left: We need a completely public health care system! Publicly funded, universal health care insurance. Health care is a right!

Homeland Security

Center: Homeland security is a priority, balance between natural disaster relief and anti-terrorism. Missile Defense is inappropriate.

Immigration

Center-Right: Illegal immigration is a serious problem. Tighter border security. Reform immigration laws. (Guest programs are fycking shyte, and if any leftist supports them, that is idiotic, open borders shaft american workers, who will lose out on their well paying working class jobs, controlled immigration of students, and skilled people should be allowed though, and illegal immigration as a problem needs to be tackled, though immigration reform is for the best.)

Iran

Left: We should deal with Iran through the United Nations.

Iraq

Center: We should seek a multilateral solution and bring in the UN/NATO and allies to help rebuild Iraq. (The iraq war was shyte, but we should help iraqi people, and against Islamic facism, fyck NATO though, burn something that should have never existed to the fycking ground).

Free Trade

Far-Left: Protect the American labor market. Punish companies that send jobs overseas. (Only true pro labor position, others justify sending jobs off shore instead of a condemnation of it, and getting back products to be made by american labor, with a god living wage, push poor countries up not have a corporate race to the bottom.)

Personal Tax

Left:  Increase income tax for the rich. Reduce slightly for those in lower income bracket.

Same-Sex Marriage

Far-Left: Same-sex marriage is a fundamental human right.

Social Security

Left: No to private investment and personal retirement accounts, increase funding.

Unions

Far-Left: Organized labor is essential to a worker's state and unions provide the source of our prosperity.

War on Terror

Center-Left:
Focus on better foreign policy and cut off terrorist funding, use military force if we must.
