Please discuss.

It would have to require a huge error on Clinton's part, like dividing by zero.

I think it might've looked something like this.

Bob Dole-282
Bill Clinton-256

This scenario is of course, very unlikely

However if you look at the county by county maps of some swing states like OH  and PA many crucial areas for delivering the states to Clinton in 1996. Could have easily gone for Dole and handed him at least those two states. The same could be said for MO and FL.

The line between the Alternative History and the What-If board have always been very vague.  Frankly, I allow it to remain that way.

We'd be discussing Clinton's epic fail more than anything.

We would have had a President who was funnier than the previous one, but less effective.

We survived 8 years of Bush; I seriously doubt Dole would have been any worse.

Comparing Dole to Bush is unfair. After all Dole was pretty moderate, if we compare to current GOP. And he was not an idiot ;)

And this has nothing to do with Bob Dole's political views, just the sad unfortunate fact that he is Bob Dole. Kind of like it wasn't Michael Dukakis' views that cost him election 1988, it was just being Michael Dukakis that did it in.

Well, what happens is really highly dependent on why Clinton loses.

If it is just a bad campaign then I think we see ...

1996 - Dole/Kemp over Clinton/Gore
2000 - Clinton/Gore over Dole/Kemp
9/11 still happens ... War in Afghanistan still happens ... War in Iraq doesn't happen
2004 - Kemp/Giuliani over Gore/Leiberman
Hurricane Katrina handled much better than before
2008 - Kemp/Giuliani over Kerry/Richardson
2009 - Kemp dies in office and Giuliani becomes President

I don't think it likely that the Dems would have repeated a losing ticket, i.e. running Clinton/Gore in 2000 after they lost in '96.
