Abstinence works.  Abstinence-only education doesn't work.
2  General Politics / U.S. General Discussion / Re: Fort hood shooter had Ties to obama on: November 07, 2009, 07:21:08 pm
Well, this guy was a sick nutcase but, as the link points he wasn't linked to the Obama admin any more than David Allen Muhammed was linked to the Bush admin.
3  General Politics / U.S. General Discussion / Re: Fort hood shooter had Ties to obama on: November 07, 2009, 08:38:10 am
Well, actually your subject line is incorrect.

And I quote from your link,

"Hasan is being reported as a participant in the GWU Homeland Security Policy Institute's Presidential Transition Task Force, not as a member, noting the group was a university think-tank, not part of the Obama administration official transition team."

So ... yeah, a university think-tank allowed a Major in the US Military to participate in a think-tank.  Keep on trying there Republi-Troll.
4  General Politics / U.S. General Discussion / Knowing Then What You Know Now .... on: November 05, 2009, 09:00:16 pm
For each presidential election in which you have voted ... if you could go back and vote again ... would you vote for the same person or change?

Here are mine ...

1996 - Voted Clinton, Would still vote Clinton
2000 - Voted Gore, Would still vote Gore
2004 - Voted Kerry, would stay home and vomit in a bucket
2008 - Voted Obama, would still vote Obama
5  General Politics / U.S. General Discussion / Re: If Air Travel Worked Like Health Care on: September 29, 2009, 04:49:32 pm
Actually if the airlines worked like health care we would pay a certain amount every month (like $100) with the idea being that if anyone wanted to travel they could.  However, the more frequently you travel the higher you would be charged to do so.

Oh, and every so often, even though you've been routinely paying for travel, when you tried to book a trip you would be told that you aren't allowed (but thanks for the money).

Oh, and if there was an emergency, you could just show up at the airport at the last minute and no matter whether or not you've been paying for it they would let you on a plane.  And then everyone else could foot the bill.
6  General Politics / U.S. General Discussion / Re: Rate the US Presidents since 1945 by thier level of charisma on: September 25, 2009, 10:37:43 pm
FDR - 5 (could have sold ice to an eskimo)
Truman - 3 (avg Presidential charisma)
Eisenhower - 3 (avg Presidential charisma ... being a war hero he didn't need any extra)
JFK - 4 (inspired many but didn't have the FDR/Reagan ability to make even his enemies like him)
LBJ - 1 (almost as charismatic feces)
Nixon - 3 (cleverly manipulative but not specifically charismatic ... made way too many enemies)
Ford - 1 (a dolt, a nimrod, less charismatic than Johnson)
Carter - 2 (really lucky he ran against Ford in '76)
Reagan - 5 (the man was a freakin' movie star ... the only way he could have been more charismatic was if he was Paul Newman)
Bush I - 2 (boring, bland, monotone)
Clinton - 4 (see JFK)
Bush II - 4 (despite his personal failings, lack of intelligence, and lousy positions he got almost 1/2 the nation to vote for him ... twice ... the only thing he had was charisma)
Obama - 4 (jury is still out, but basically it was charisma which took him from being a state senator to the White House in 4 years)
7  Presidential Elections - Analysis and Discussion / Election What-ifs? / Re: Lists of alternate Vice President (see details) on: September 22, 2009, 08:25:26 pm
39th: Robert Finch (R-AZ), January 20, 1969 - August 9, 1974

Finch was from CA

But he was born in AZ (his father was a Congressman from AZ).  I believe there is some ridiculous clause which states that Pres and VP must be from different states.  With Nixon being from CA I'm sure they would do a Bush/Cheney move where they say he's from AZ.
8  Presidential Elections - Analysis and Discussion / Election What-ifs? / Re: Lists of alternate Vice President (see details) on: September 22, 2009, 02:49:20 pm
I assume that any presidential successor will remain in office the way Truman, LBJ, and Ford all did.  This gives rise to presidencies for Douglas, Smathers, and Finch respectively.

34rd: William O. Douglas (D-WA), January 20 - April 12, 1945
Vacant, April 12, 1945 - January 20, 1949
35th: James Byrnes (D-SC), January 20, 1949 - January 20, 1953
36th: Henry Cabot Lodge (R-MA), January 20, 1953 - July 31, 1961
37th: George Smathers (D-FL), January 20, 1961 - November 22, 1963
Vacant, November 22, 1963 - January 20, 1965
38th: Lyndon Johnson (D-TX), January 20, 1965 - January 20, 1969
39th: Robert Finch (R-AZ), January 20, 1969 - August 9, 1974
Vacant, August 9 - December 19, 1974
40th: George Romney (R-MI), December 19, 1974 - January 20, 1977
41st: Frank Church (D-ID). January 20, 1977 - January 20, 1981
42nd: Richard Schweiker (R-PA), January 20, 1981 - January 20, 1989
43rd: John Danforth (R-MO), January 20, 1989 - January 20, 1993
44th: Bob Graham (D-FL), January 20, 1993 - January 20, 2001
45th: Elizabeth Dole (R-NC), January 20, 2001 - January 20, 2009
46th: Al Gore (D-TN), January 20, 2009 - present
9  General Politics / U.S. General Discussion / Soapbox Complaint About America's Messed Up Credit System on: September 12, 2009, 12:32:15 pm
So this is way off topic but I don't care I need to vent.

I'm in the process of buying a house.  I have no debt and haven't had any because I don't buy things I can't afford.  Immediately after graduating from college I rapidly paid off my student loans.  I earn a 6 digit salary and have worked for the same company for 5 years.  I have sizable savings stored up in cash as well as in stable stocks (Microsoft, Pfizer, etc) and I completely own 2 vehicles.  I pay off my credit card bills every month in full.

Now that I want to purchase a home I'm running into banks giving me a hard time over things like "you have no revolving debt" and "there's no history of you dealing with financial instability".

So WTF is messed up with this country!!  I mean seriously, the fact that I've spent my life being responsible is now actually being punished?!?!?  Maybe I should have overextended myself.

Maybe in the future I'll just steal the money.
10  General Discussion / Alternative History / Re: What if Bob Dole had won in 1996? on: August 12, 2009, 10:51:49 pm
Well, what happens is really highly dependent on why Clinton loses.

If it is just a bad campaign then I think we see ...

1996 - Dole/Kemp over Clinton/Gore
2000 - Clinton/Gore over Dole/Kemp
9/11 still happens ... War in Afghanistan still happens ... War in Iraq doesn't happen
2004 - Kemp/Giuliani over Gore/Leiberman
Hurricane Katrina handled much better than before
2008 - Kemp/Giuliani over Kerry/Richardson
2009 - Kemp dies in office and Giuliani becomes President

Hmmm .... hypocrisy?

13  General Discussion / Alternative History / Re: No 9/11 on: March 20, 2009, 07:06:27 pm
Without 9/11 there is no firm move against Al Qaeda and the Bush admin continues to push on the missile shield the way they were before.  The economy still goes into the garbage and in 2004 a stronger Democratic field runs against him.  My thought is we then see a Hillary Clinton Presidency.
14  General Discussion / History / Re: Who was the worst Secretary of Defense? on: March 08, 2009, 09:42:52 am
I am curious as to why no one has brought up any of the Carter/Clinton people who let the DoD atrophy.

You do know that Clinton was carrying out the plan put in place by the Sec of Defense of his predecessor (aka Dick Cheney).  Bush/Cheney began the plan of scaling back the military.
15  General Politics / U.S. General Discussion / Re: It's Official - Rush Limbaugh runs the Republican Party on: March 04, 2009, 08:24:53 am
The Republican party is bowing down to a fat drug addict who picked on children and proudly admits to hoping the American government fails.

Wow ... this is NOT the party of Reagan any more.

17  General Discussion / History / Re: CSPAN's new presidential rankings on: February 16, 2009, 10:29:05 pm
If you look at the categories and how they ranked Presidents within them you see that this list is ridiculous.  William Henry Harrison gets bashed in several areas.  Honestly, WHH should be in the dead middle.  The guy wasn't in office long enough to be good or bad at ANYTHING!

And putting George Washington near the top of Presidents seeking equality for all conveniently forgets Oney Judge.

Vilsack: 318
Barbour: 221

Vilsack and Barbour each win the base of their parties and the election boils down to being decided in the "farm states" where Vilsack plays better than Barbour.

20  General Discussion / Alternative History / Re: If Al Gore had won in 2000.... on: January 26, 2009, 01:55:48 pm
You know how some Conservatives seem to think that Nixon in 1960 would have meant a successful Bay of Pigs Invasion?  I think Liberals have the same thoughts about Gore and 9/11.

So 2 trains of thought on this one and they diverge depending on whether you think 9/11 would have happened or not under Gore.

First train, if Gore is President and 9/11 happens.  He takes the blame.  He invades Afghanistan but not Iraq.  I don't see him running for reelection in 2004.  Instead I think we see John Kerry get his clock cleaned John McCain.

Second train, if Gore is President and 9/11 doesn't happen.  Gore's "lockbox" strategy regarding tax $'s is blamed for rough economic times.  By 2004 though the economy is making a turn, the war on terror never happens, and Gore is defeated by Jeb Bush.

This is "what if Nixon beat Kennedy in 1960".

35. President Richard Nixon - 1961 - 1963
*Nixon assassinated by a crazy Lee Harvey Oswald
36. President Henry Cabot Lodge Jr - 1963 - 1969
37. President John Kennedy - 1969 - 1977
38. President Ronald Reagan - 1977 - 1985
39. President Robert Kennedy - 1985 - 1993
40. President Lloyd Bentsen - 1993 - 2001
41. President John McCain - 2001 - 2005
42. President Bill Clinton - 2005 - 2013

Who is Clinton's Vice President?

The VP pairings I envisioned are

*Richard Nixon/Henry Cabot Lodge Jr
*Henry Cabot Lodge Jr/Everett Dirksen
*John Kennedy/John Connally
*Ronald Reagan/Richard Schweiker
*Robert Kennedy/Lloyd Bentsen
*Lloyd Bentsen/Bill Bradley
*John McCain/Fred Thompson
*Bill Clinton/Max Cleland

What if Jerry Springer, former Mayor of Cincinnati won Governorship of Ohio in 1982, after successfully winning the Democratic Nomination upon not releasing commercials where he made reference to his use "services"?

Springer wins the election but his stint as governor is a short one.  The story breaks and he is impeached.

What if John Hinckley had succeeded in assassinating Ronald Reagan?

24  General Politics / U.S. General Discussion / Re: Bush Farewell Address - Thursday night @ 8pm EST on: January 14, 2009, 11:49:16 pm
Did the credit crisis increase unemployment?  Sure did.  You know what else also drove up unemployment?  The deficit.  The rising price of oil.  The overall mismanagement of the economy.

Now on to the price of oil.  The problem with speculation on certain commodities is that they can cause the prices of said commodities to unnecessarily spike, thereby crushing the economy.  As for my 60% figure I get it from the 2006 Senate investigation which I cited.  In June 2006 oil traded at $60 a barrel and the Senate investigation estimated that $36 of that was due to pure financial speculation.  Now the reason oil prices have dropped is because there is less money available for investment and speculation.

The CIA outing ... regardless of whether it is Cheney or Bush who gave the order ultimately they are the top 2 in the admin.  If I recall correctly Bush said he would get to the bottom of this and find out who was responsible.  But once Scooter was implicated Bush lost interest.
25  General Politics / U.S. General Discussion / Re: Bush Farewell Address - Thursday night @ 8pm EST on: January 14, 2009, 10:35:05 pm
Paul, after 8 years of watching the Bush admin trash the country I think I have a right to mock them.

Unemployment - When Bush came into office it was roughly 4%.  By 2003 it had risen to 6% and the Bush people were arguing that the reason for the rise was because they said government policies have a lag impact on the economy and they blamed the Clinton admin.  In 2007 it dropped to 4.5%.  I suspect this was because of the tax cuts which are a short term solution.  Within a year though umemployment started climbing and it continues to do so ... right now it is at 7%.   Here's my source ... http://research.stlouisfed.org/fred2/data/UNRATE.txt

Price of oil - The reason the price of oil skyrocketed was due to ridiculous overspeculation on oil futures.  In fact as much as 60% of the current price of oil is due to speculation.  A Senate Subcommittee documented a gaping loophole in US government regulation of oil derivatives so huge a herd of elephants could walk through it.  The report was then ignored by Congress and the White House.  Here's the fun part, until 2001 US energy futures were traded exclusively on regulated exchanges.  But, at the behest of Enron and other large energy traders, the Republican Congress passed the Commodity Futures Modernization Act (remember that closed meeting Dick Cheney held).  And the oil prices have skyrocketed.

Endless Wars - I agree that Afghanistan is necessary.  Iraq still seems endless and was a foolish diversion.  Now we're stuck with it.

Nukes in North Korea and Iran - Once the genie is out of the bottle there's no putting it back.

CIA Outing - It has clearly been established that Scooter Libby was the "leak".   However, numerous members of the jury have said they felt Libby was "following orders".  Now only 2 people can give the VP's Chief of Staff orders ... and they are Bush and Cheney.

Abortion - The GOP has been promising for years that they would end abortion.  It is a red herring.

No Terrorist Attacks - Prior to 9/11 there had never been a successful terrorist attack on American soil (aside from the Oklahoma City Bombing).  If you want to use this has a measure of success for Bush then maybe we should also point out that the sun continues to come up in the morning.
