About Me
As someone who's posted here for eight years, I know how difficult it is to get caught up in discourse that goes beyond the academic dialogue for which this forum was intended; to rely upon your fellow posters not only as reliable associates for which to discuss a shared hobby, but as friends.  However, as some of you who are still reading this thread may already know, this forum (or its AAD counterpart) can also serve as a place for less desirable discourse which has on display at various times throughout the site's history.

Although many of these "altercations" don't amount to anything more than petty strawmans and name calling, the repetition of these outbursts can take a psychological toll that would one would be smart not to endure.  The sources of these stressors coerce their participants into cultures which are blatantly unhealthy for any person to practice in the real world.  Most depraved is that those who seem to bear the grudging respect of the common heard act no different than those they bully (or police, if you will); rather, they use internet institutions like these to attempt make up for the lack of social affection given to them in their own lives by mercilessly degrading those who suffered the same abuse as themselves, blatant emotional inconsistency which can be described as nothing less than sociopathic.  Knowing how young some of our posters are, there is no telling how much genuine emotional damage is being inflicted on a demographic which is genuinely vulnerable to said peer pressure.

Judging by the poor social circumstances of such circles as compared to those which are encountered in person, I can only assume that the "real world statuses" for these people are not significantly better than those of who are bullied or repeatedly harassed.  What’s disheartening is that even some of our more academic posters do nothing to stop this behavior on AAD and the Atlas Forum itself, but consistently condone or even support it.  These actions prove that even our most promising posters are susceptible to the toxicity of “internet culture” as well as validating a crucial fact: this forum is not a suitable substitute for a social life.  To continue this cycle of hurtful and cliquish behavior only seeks to perpetrate this myth, a falsity which serves as a vast injustice for all forum members.

The recent uptick in racist and xenophobic attitudes only serves to prove the intellectual dishonesty of many members.  Several posters have often used the existence of the first amendment to criticize the outrage of many posters regarding the abhorrent behavior of white nationalists, despite the forum’s clear and written disposition against such degrading remarks.   “I’m not that easily offended, and you shouldn’t be either...” is their common explanation to mask the working personas of many members, only for their cool to be hampered by the slightest provocation when discussing another issue.  This proves that these posters whom we interact with are not people themselves, but social constructs formed out of the desperate desires of cowardly individuals to seek attention.

In addition to the already begrudging issues regarding the social culture of this forum, the recent rise in xenophobic and racist remarks has made me believe that the forum’s reputation as a place for tactful and peaceful discussion has been compromised.  As a member who’s posted for the better part of the decade, I believe that the only way to prevent these wrongs is for potential users to avoid the forum altogether.

Goodbye, and thank you to all those who cared and contributed fond memories.
