The issue wasn't that Newman was pro-life. He machine barely eked it out for Lipinski.

Yeah, Lipinski got a net 4K votes from the city of Chicago, 4x his winning margin. He can thank Madigan for the 2 year extension on his congressional shelftime.

...Or Catholic Hispanics felt threatened for obvoious reasons.  Dan didn't get his margin in Chicago out of Archie Bunker.

Lipinskis's district was gerrymandered to reduce the Latino percentage from 24% to 20%

Or were they redistricted into Luis Gutierrez' district to ensure they were represented by a Latino? Cmon, this wasn't done in order to "save" Lipinski's district.

What's going on with Dupage county? NYT says 50% in with 14 votes?

Two very unpopulated precincts. Its correct.

I'd like to thank the Catholic Church, the Chicago Police, the AFL-CIO, working people, and minorities for sending our man back to Congress. Smiley

And the Polish-American community in IL 3rd as well!

FF coalition!

Can we finally dispel with the myth that this is an "Uber liberal district because it voted for Bernie in 2016 and Lipinski has no business in it" now?

Yes, exactly. Bernie vs. Hillary was more complex than just progressives vs. moderates. This district is for sure moving more towards the left from where it once was, but its still a Lipinski district.

Lmao Marie is not conceding and said "I'd like Mr. Lipinski to have a very painful evening".

Classy!

Gross. I can respect the cause she (and much of Atlas) represented in this race, but she's terrible.

Not conceding, selling souls out to neo nazis, I wonder where else I have seen this lately...

She's Illinois' very own Roy Moore.
More like Rick Saccone (could've won but ran a bad campaign).

Her campaign was ok though wasn't it? I have no doubt that she would have won though if this was an open race and Lipinski was a first timer as well though.
She didn't really fit the district well with her focus on social issues, clearly. If she focused more on pocketbooks issues and healthcare she probably could've snatched it.
I mean that's really fair. A strong economic progressive (who happens to be pro-choice) probably would have faired better than a PRO-CHOICE candidate.

Lipinski was the only Illinois Democrat in Congress to oppose the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (Obamacare), which passed the House on March 21, 2010.[27] He said that he broke ranks with his party for a number of reasons, including the bill's provisions related to abortion.[28] Lipinski had previously voted for a version of the bill that contained more stringent restrictions on abortion funding

And his Obamacare stance has changed over the past 8 years....

I may be wrong, but I expect Lipinski to take this as a sign that he needs to start/continue moving to the left on at least a few issues (healthcare, DREAMERS, min. wage, other economic stuff). Of course it likely won't be enough to satisfy most of the Newman supporters here, but it may be enough to keep his constituents happy in 2020 and quash enough interest in another challenge so soon.
