Centrism has been under attack for a long time. The last truly median voter theory election was 2000. I will always believe that Bush struck first. The country was united behind him with 90% approval ratings (about 70% enduring) and then he, politicized 9/11 in the run up to the 2002 midterm elections and used it to pummel moderate Democrats and send us to war. Thus the myth of the "loser DLC centrist who can't get anything done" was born. The NetRoots arose, said that the centrists weren't moving the "Overton Window", while on Atlas moderates were called disingenuous "heroes." A hue and cry went up that continues to this day for Democrats to "stand on what they really think instead of this wishy washy nonsense." The notion is that compromise is somehow morally bankrupt instead of part and parcel of politics, and that a noble loss is better than a partial win.

As far as the Internet getting worse, progressives were the first offenders here IMO, as tumblr feminism started really radicalizing by late 2013/early 2014. Remember the whole #CancelColbert nonsense. But the real revolution was about a year later when #GamerGate changed the game. Suddenly the conservative majority that apparently was always there took over the Internet. They attained the majority on 4chan (used to be more libertarian/apolitical), YouTube, Twitter, and even Reddit, temporarily assembling a coalition to oust CEO Ellen Pao. SJW became a pejorative and the Trump movement came along in mid-2015 and the rest is history. That is where we are now. As far as centrists, they are nowhere to be seen. Maybe on sites like Reason.com or on the "uncool" MSM. But there is very little organic centrism online these days.

This is easily the worst interpretation of the First Amendment and understanding of the US legal system I have seen all year:

All the Americans commenting in this thread should remember that, under the US "Free Speech" Smiley Smiley Smiley jurisprudence, the perpetrator also couldn't have been convicted of anything beyond arson, because hey, antisemitism is an opinion and therefore is protected by muh First Amendment. Out of this field, Castro, then Oprah, then Patrick

No White Males, and No Gabbard, please.
What exactly makes a white male bad?

If we want to combat racism we can't keep giving Whites positions of power.

For that matter, if we want to combat sexism we can't give men positions of power either, but Kamala Harris and Tammy Duckworth aren't on this list.

Not to say that Americans aren’t susceptible to allying themselves with very questionable individuals  (hence our current president), but Anderson would likely be destroyed and I fail to see why you think he would successful. Anderson has little to no name recognition, and the only name recognition he or his church has is strictly from two infamous events that would hurt him with a solid majority of the electorate:

1. Saying that he prayed for Obama’s death
2. His church’s stance that homosexuality should be punished with death leading to the SPLC deeming his church a hate group

This might energize radical conservatives but would be massive turnoffs to everyone else. He also lacks any relevant experience (yes, yes, Trump was elected, but I strongly believe most of the country still sees this as a net negative). I guess him being a religious leader would be an endearing quality to many Christian voters, but I think it would completely alienate all religious minorities and Democratic margins among those groups would be even higher than usual.

This should lead to a very large Harris victory, especially considering this be immediately after the very unpopular previous Republican administration.

He's actually pretty liberal on a few issues such as immigration, war, non intervention, and Israel-Palestine. Plus he hates the vets so I'm sure that will bring many cross over democrats and he sided with Muslims over gays and Jews so that could help him win more democrats potentially.

The idea tax cuts is some master political strategy is weird. Even in the 1980s crime panic and late Cold War jingoism did far more to win the GOP votes than tax cuts. Nobody really cares about taxes anymore and the few people that do always vote Republican.

100% bet you don't even pay taxes at all.

> Both want to stop all immigration, one is just more outwardly bigoted about it.

Uhh what is this racial take? Back when I was home (1 month ago admittedly) the race of the candidates wasn't really an issue. Rather it was that SF politics is heavily factionalised into personal camps and local issues like development. Politics is also "pyramid shaped meritocratic" so everyone wishes for the top job. Breed at the time seemed like a compromise candidate between the factions whp cpuld keep the ship running. She however was gaining popularity quickly, much quicker than a seatwarmer should. But even then, people were expecting a Leno push for the office in November.

I guess I should go and check up whats happening back home.

The racial take was very prominent, as the progressives brought up her race when removing her from office, albeit they said they were disappointed they had to replace a black woman who grew up in public housing with a rich white millionaire from Pacific Heights.

This wasn't about being progressive. Neither of them is progressive. It was about not having the same person having too much power by being both President of the Board of supervisors and mayor.  Of course the non progressives do everything they can to stop there from being a progressive mayor of San Francisco, whether it's assassinating a progressive mayor in 1978 so that Dianne Feinstein can become mayor, or Newsom delaying taking office as Lt. Governor in 2011 so that a more conservative board of supervisors picks his replacement.

I really feel like a lot of the Tulsi hate is stemming from her endorsing Bernie and going so hard after the Clintons. Manchin is a literal DINO and gets far less grief and he happened to endorse Hillary.

Jones also said he doesn’t support interracial marriage or integration in schools, and he hesitated when asked whether African-Americans and Latinos should have the right to vote.

“I don’t believe in equality — period,” Jones said.

So he's pretty rank-and-file with his party there.

I'm not too worried about this seat since Hillary did win it, but isn't this the socially conservative Democratic district where these kinds of views could resonate with the deplorables?

The Russians are our great friends and allies and we should definitely enlist their help in defeating terrorists and winning the 2018 and other future elections.

For your interest, I support the Assad government because I believe their the lesser of two evils. The Syrian Rebels are a bunch of Whabbi extremists, and if they overthrow Assad they'll kill every Christian and Shiite Muslim in Syria. It's a shame that America and Israel are backing Sunni Terrorist over a Secular, Democraticly-elected government (Syria had a multi-party Election in 2014 that Assad won with almost 90% of the vote). If I was President I'd pull all US troops out of the Middle East (and East Asia and Europe), and start spending that money on helping our Nations poor, instead of dropping bombs on Third-world countries where we aren't even on the right side of the conflict.

Edit: See I was beaten to it.

This old classic nonsense is back I see:

Hillary was uniquely bad for Erie and the Wyoming Valley.

The only ones who would do as bad or worse are Booker and Harris. But even they might be saved by the Philly suburbs and Pittsburgh bucking even harder against Trump and his many faults actually as President. Also, third party votes will probably be non-existent in some of these states after 2016 had two grossly unpopular candidates. 2016 was really a sh-t storm.

Coming from a Pennsylvanian, Harris and Booker would have an EASIER time than Clinton. Booker could raise the margins in eastern Pennsylvania and Philadelphia due to the close proximity of his home state (Yes, a candidate's close residence to another state has worked before. e.g. Bernie Sanders with Maine, Rhode Island, and New Hampshire) Harris would just do a hell of a lot better with workers than Clinton. I hate Booker and I understand his electability issues, but I still don't get the hate Kamala gets. It's almost if Atlas is just trolling.

Hoping for a Pressley win. If she can get this close with just a month of campaigning, hopefully she can pull out a win.

Why?

Because the Massachusetts delegation is all-white and severely lacking in women. It may not be important to you, but having proper representation of women and minorities in Congress is important for some people. Tough luck for Capuano, but times are changing.

Believing that more than 20% of Congresspeople should be women is not absurd or ignorant.

Then support some female candidates to knock out Republican men.

The guy just buys too much snake oil. He tries to come across as this "hip/cool" contrarian but ends up just boot-licking the most powerful man on Earth.

That said, he definitely has had some good moments.
The contemporary counter-culture is in the Trump camp bro.

Thinking about things more, the fact that sex segregated prisons seem like such a rape risk implies a problem with society in of itself (ie If we can't trust people to be in mixed prisons without serious problems, our culture has a pretty nasty streak through it).

Wow someone is f[inks]ing clueless. This shows zero understanding of how California elections work:

HP unless your pro Iraq war, pro bush tax cuts and hate marijuana. She's just overall way too conservative for her state, if she doesn't lose the primary she will probably lose the general.

It's literally insulting to the non-white people and women who carry the Democratic Party that they would nominate two white men in order to satisfy a demographic they lose by 30 points.
It's much more insulting when the working class is mocked and forgotten about by a party that pretends to care about minorities when they are more importantly looking for champagne liberals in Orange County and using minorities as cover to do it.

Tell that to the Third Way mealymouths who spout off "business-friendly solutions", "right-to-work", and "the future of the Democratic Party is in the country clubs of Dallas".

Using 100% fabricated quotes that get literally one hit on Google, that being that post itself is bad.

I thought the title was going to be Toy's R Us to stop selling plastic replica AR-15 rifles.

Anyway, great news. In Perth, this store is an abomination. My ex-wife bought a cheap Chinese toy for my boys birthday. It was dangerous and ultimately banned from sale in WA.

But that did not stop TRU from denying a refund, which they reneged on when I got my local member for Parliament to investigate their cheap Chinese import practices of unsafe toys.

So now, when I have a spare 2 hours to kill, I take my three boys to TRU and let them run loose until they have essentially destroyed half the store, then I buy $30 worth of stuff, and let the moronic staff clean it up.

Remember, secret tip: children love packaging, not the toys. When in a toy store, they fall in love. But when you get home, they stop playing with the toy after about 4 minutes.

Obama really did a number on people's view on how fast people can rise through the political ladder. There's not going to be another Obama, at least for a very long time, so its useless to project someone like this as VP.

Obama, Sanders, and Trump ALL did a number on people's view of what kinds of candidates could rise to the top of presidential politics. The only thing they all had in common is, they were all running against Hillary Clinton (and people don't believe me when I say that without Sanders, Martin O'Malley would have been a juggernaut). My view is that it's deep-seated misogyny.

Support, and I don't get why people get so upset about them.  Right to work doesn't mean that workers can't join a union, just that they don't have to.  That's a fundamental part of freedom of association in this country.  I suspect the opposition has more to do with super-rich union bosses afraid of losing their big bucks in union dues.

How is this a good thing? This just proves the Democratic advantage is packed in already-Dem districts.
