I just finished watching Milk.

It was good but, honestly, it's probably a bit overrated.

You watched a liberal movie?

...

Why are you such an idiot? Have you not realized that my entertainment interests aren't dictated by my political preferences (like most normal people)? My favorite musical artist is Stevie Wonder, for Christ's sake.

Just seems odd, since I can't think of any movies or music of the opposite ideology I like. Then again considering the political slant of Hollywood, the indie movie scene and the indie/emo/punk/hardcore scene that's not hard for me.

Anyway, yes, I watched a liberal movie. I've also voluntarily watched a movie by my least favorite person in politics - Al Gore

Worse than Bob Casey, Jr.?

Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind.

The style was cool, but the movie was way too predictable. I don't know if it was supposed to have any plot twists or not, but everything was obvious.

Be Kind Rewind. Was rather funny, but it kind of ran out of steam by the end.

Pineapple Express was good but not even the best comedy of 2008. Role Models was better.

Adventureland.

Don't expect Superbad. This is more of a somewhat raunchy coming-of-age teen comedy, similar to the comedies of the era it is set in. But very funny and touching. Strongly recommended. And not just for the Replacements and Husker Du references. Kristen Stewart's character is basically the first ever 80s emo character I've ever seen in a movie.

They seriously have Replacements and Husker Du referernces in the movie? Now I have to see it...

The Replacements are also on the soundtrack, and at one point Kristen Stewart is listening to what I think is a Husker Du song in the car when she's driving.

The original is a big joke. The "acting" is downright laughable, the soundtrack is hilariously innapropiate, and the production values are so week it seems more silly than brutal. I'll probably see that remake sometime since it looks like it was actually done well.

Last I saw was The Golden Compass, which was so unrelated to religion it was quite hilarious anyone got upset about it. The only thing I could see being offensive on a religious level was the whole thing of having the soul exist outside the body as the animal spirit. The regime portrayed was a lot more like your typical 18th/early 19th century autocratic empire than a theocracy or anything. The movie though was a bit of a mess honestly. I'm sure the book is better, the movie just didn't have enough time to explain everything, it felt quite rushed really. Probably should've been at least an hour longer like the LotR films. The effects and CGI obviously were awesome, but there just wasn't enough time to make the story interesting.

Observe and Report.

Not your typical Seth Rogen fare, but still very, very funny.

Surprisingly dark. Maybe Rogen's best movie. My only major issue with it is that they went with a Hollywood ending which contained massive plot holes.

I take it you haven't heard about the Taxi Driver homage theory.

State of Play.

This is probably my favorite of 2009 so far. The plot was full of twists but always kept you engaged and itself interesting, never a dull moment, the cast rocked, well OK some of Affleck's more "serious" moments could've used some work but whatever, Crowe absolutely owned. This is one of the most engaging and effective movies in a long time that American studios usually won't bother with anymore, this being a remake of a British miniseries.

Synecdoche, New York

It was kind of, uh well, it could've been really powerful but it was just so strange. I really enjoyed the first half hour or so, but after that it became like I described.

Seven Pounds.

Actually really good despite a brief part in the middle when it veered into chick flick-dom. A bunch of scenes near the end were especially powerful.

The rumor is that they want Javier Bardem for the role. That would just be too awesome for words.

That would be enough to make me actually see the movie.  Javier Bardem is an excellent actor in anything.

Did you actually watch Love in the Time of Cholera?

No, actually.  I didn't even know there was a movie version (I have read the book).  I'm guessing by your comment that it was horrible?

The critics thought so.

Haven't seen though, never will and wouldn't even if it got glowing reviews obviously.

The Last House on the Left (2009)

Better than the very stupid original, though stupid in some respects as well. The last scene being the perfect example.

Punisher: War Zone

Ugh. Way worse than the much criticized 2004 film. That at least was a gritty action film, this was just stupid. Felt like a direct-to-DVD Steven Seagal movie or something.

Good action, and the IRA got their asses kicked. Good fun.

My only real big problem with State of Play is the ending basically downgraded the whole scope of the story. They had this huge conspiracy going on and then kind of threw it all away.

Killshot.

One review said "Ultimately it's Rourke who makes the film worth watching." and that's very true. His performance was awesome. Sadly the rest of the movie felt like a mess, not surprising for a movie delayed over 3 years and that has gone a million re-writes and edits, including the complete removal of one character. Didn't feel incomplete, just more like the Cliff Notes version. But Rourke (who is basically the protaganist actually), as well as Diane Lane in her underwear, both made it worth seeing.

I didn't know they were allowed to show certain, ahem, organs in rated "R" movies? When did the rules change? Not that I really care, just curious.

It's not that they couldn't, it's just that no one wants to.

Really, what's the threshold on such things between R and X? They showed a dude getting a BJ in the movie.

None, because there is no X rating anymore, and there never really officially was. Now it doesn't even exist unofficially though, it's just a marketing term used by porn retailers. Pixar could market its movies as X-rated if it wanted to for some insanely bizarre reason.

Re: Top Gun, the MPAA didn't really work out the current line between PG and PG-13 until the early 90s, The Living Daylights and The Hunt For Red October are both rated PG too. PG-13 was initially designed for films that went beyond the limits of what was PG traditionally but weren't quite R, Top Gun fits the much laxer limits of PG at the time perfectly. PG-13 was intended originally to be a replacement for "soft R" movies, not "hard PG" ones, and "hard PG" ones hence kept getting rated PG until around roughly '92 or so, when they too were lumped into the PG-13 rating.
