Milk.  I liked it, but interestingly my ex-girlfriend, who I watched it with, came out with some anti-gay statements.  Like most Thais, she has many gay friends, and doesn't see homosexuality as a negative in and of itself, but rather she pointed out that 'gays are bitchy backstabbers, more than straight men or women'.  Pretty funny.

You had a Thai girlfriend? Was she just a working girl you were particularly fond of or was this some sort of platonic thing?

And are Thais thus less homophobic than Americans? Wouldn't surprise me but then again what are the odds of gay marriage being legal in Thailand anytime soon.

She's my ex.  I would only date upper-middle class educated respectable girls.  I don't 'date' working girls.

So did she know about the working girls and just not care? Not a bad arrangement.

I just watched two really good movies yesterday - one is a favorite of yours: Kick-Ass.  I had resisted renting it for ages, but now I see it is very good.

Yes. Ruled.

Secondly, Rachel's Getting Married - wow, so good.  The main character reminded me almost precisely of a good friend of mine back home.

I didn't enjoy that movie because I was expecting it to be a quirky indie comedy. That's basically what the trailer sold it as.

Repo Men.

This was a rather odd movie, the plot basically made no sense, there was stuff in there that I'm amazed made it to a relatively mainstream movie (for example there is a bit where a couple basically cuts themselves open and exposes their internal organs-except that it's shot like it's a romantic sex scene. Complete with an appropriate soundtrack), and the violence was extreme (I watched the unrated version so I don't know what was in the theatrical cut but I'd be surprised if the version I saw would be able to get an R rating.) The ending by the way is horrible and basically is the type of ending that would ruin the rest of the film if the plot was any good to begin with. So it's kind of worth watching for the wrong reasons.

Oh by the way the DVD menu acts like you can watch bonus features but try to play them and it gives a message that they aren't available on the rental version. Now I know it's not uncommon for rental DVDs to have the bonus features stripped but pretending like they are there and doing a fakeout is rather lame.

I plan on waiting till the series is complete to see all the Harry Potter movies. Once Death Hallows Part 2 hits theaters I'll have to Netflix the first seven in order before seeing it. Until then I'm not seeing any of them.

Easy A

This was definitely one of the better teen comedies in the last decade. Of course it's hard to believe that a hot redhead with a nice rack like Emma Stone would be so ignored and unpopular, but it was full of clever writing and actually good acting.

Youth in Revolt.

This was a pretty funny movie in an odd way and worked well as a straight deconstruction of "rebellious teenagers". Michael Cera's character's alternate personality was actually rather convincing as a non-Michael Cera-ish character though I doubt he'll be playing any non-Michael Cera-ish characters for still quite awhile.

Hot Tub Time Machine

It was rather stupid but had some pretty funny moments. Worth watching for cheap or free.

I am hoping to be the first person on the forum to see Black Swan. Opens here Friday.

Well I saw Black Swan. This was basically as Aronofsky said a companion piece to The Wrestler, though the style was more Requiem for a Dream. See it at a late night showing, a lot of the later scenes are quite horrifying and better later. Also this is probably the closest you will ever get to seeing Natalie Portman's tits (in a somewhat see-through ballet outfit.)

I sort of got the impression that the cast (especially Dennis Quaid) were aware of how dumb of a movie it was and were kidding around and not taking it seriously. Which is actually far better than giving a serious performance in a dumb movie (and makes the difference between a dumb movie that can still be entertaining, which Legion can be under the right circumstances, and one that is just bad.)

Oh I just looked that up, thought it was going to be about straight guys working as gay prostitutes.

I just watched Before the Devil Knows You're Dead, very nice.  I challenge anyone to say something bad about Philip Seymour Hoffman.

I also challenge anyone to say something bad about Marisa Tomei's tits.

Synecdoche, New York

This is actually the second time I've seen it, but the first time I was just like "WTF?" and kind of quit paying attention. MUCH better on the second viewing. Especially as you're more likely to pay attention to the storytelling and acting and all instead of just thinking "Why is her house on fire? Why did that guy follow him for 20 years?" Also Phillip Seymour Hoffman was so great he went ignored, and probably because people usually expect him to be that good anyway. Very underrated performance.

Documentary on Captain Beefheart narrated by John Peel.

The only thing I know about Captain Beefheart is one of the bands I saw at Dude Fest 2007 covered one of his songs.

Red.

This was a pretty funny movie with good action as well. Apparently it has nothing to do with the graphic novel besides a similar general premise, but it worked. I guess Mary-Louise Parker doesn't have much range though, her character never struck me as much different from Nancy Botwin, though she was nice to look at which is what really matters.

The Town.  I thought it was good while being very implausible. Jeremy Renner saved the movie for me. I'm personally getting a little tired of these tough guy Boston movies though. You have every mick in a scally cap who doesnt pronounce their r's thinking they are a tough guy now.

I didn't care too much about Renner because his character really just wasn't that interesting. He was great in his gunfight near the end though. I was more impressed with Jon Hamm who had a similar one-dimensional character but did a better job of being notable.

The only thing I found really implausible about it that isn't the standard suspension of disbelief one has to accept is that it would take the FBI so long to find out Affleck was talking to the bank manager with all the surveillance he was supposedly under.

That stat was obviously bogus, something I realized since the trailer, but Ben Affleck no doubt knows more about Boston and Charlestown than anyone on the forum.

Finally saw True Grit. Honestly found it kind of boring. The first quarter or so was probably the most interesting bit, like when the girl debated with the horse breeder. All the actors were very impressive though, and Brolin was indeed underused.

It's a commonly used term in the military for such type of personal storage units.

The American

Can a film be fascinating and boring at the same time? Tongue

Seriously, a little bit of patience is required but the payoff is quite good. We need more movies like this filtering into the mainstream American consciousness. It also didn't hurt that there were quite a few beautiful women in it.

At least it makes you want to visit Italy. I wonder if Phil would like it.

Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind

Interesting but clearly a little overrated.

I thought the story was great, but they could have really brought it to life with some better visuals.  Michel Gondry movies tend to have that problem.  I think he's self conscious about his indie street cred.

Speaking of Charlie Kaufman movies that could've been a whole lot better, I watched Synedoche, New York.  10% of the scenes were great while 90% was pointless filler.  Hmm... holy sh**t, I just got it.  Touche, Charlie, touche.

The minister's speech was one of the 10% though, right?

Children of Men

Awesome. Some of the best camera work I've ever seen in a film, for sure.

Something tells me CARLHAYDEN would just LOVE Britain's policies in that film.
