From a real life discussion I recently had: Which year is politically the most important of each decade since the 1920s (last 100 years)? I'm referring to world history and not only America, though the US plays an important role here as well.

I'd say:

1920s - 1929: The Stock Exchange Crash had lasting consequences
1930s - 1933: The Nazis came to power, FDR took office
1940s - 1945: Obvious, since World War II ended
1950s - 1953: Stalin died what had lasting consquences, Korean War ended
1960s - 1968: The protest movement changed the world
1970s - 1979: More difficult one, but I'd say 1979 for the Soviet intervention in Afghanistan and the Iranian Revolution
1980s - 1989: Obvious, since the Cold War de facto ended and the Berlin Wall came down
1990s - 1991: The USSR collapsed and America's role in the post-Cold War was definied by the intervention in the Gulf War
2000s - 2001: Obvious, many historians speak of a pre and post 9/11 world
2010s - 2016 (so far): Remains to be seen, but I'd say 2016 for Brexit and Trump
