With social issues virtually a non issue in the campaign, the country originally preferred Goldwater's economic conservatism over IceSpear's economic liberalism, so he led in the polls by big margins. However, after a rough campaign in which IceSpear relentlessly attacked Goldwater's neoconservatism, the margin tightened, but not enough to deprive Goldwater of a relatively comfortable victory. Interestingly, both candidates lost their home state.
