This speaks to what we have become as a culture.  For events that happened 30 years ago, we are demanding retroactive justice.  I personally believe that a politician should be forced to resign only for comments made in the present, or the near past (5 years).  Steve King, Cindy Hyde-Smith, any others like them.

Depends on what the events were. If they were actual crimes and not just poor judgement, I think people need to be held accountable. Otherwise, I basically agree.

Steve Bannon is not an anti-Semite, and Corey Stewart is a good man. And no, of course they wouldn't.

This is really starting to seem like an effort by Republicans to try and grab the Governor's mansion because they couldn't win the election.

Would be par for the course for the GOP.

The difference is that Dr. Ford's attempted rape allegations were extremely credible and more likely than not true, as were a second woman's (Deborah Ramirez was her name IIRC) sexual assault allegations against Kavanaugh.  There's a big difference between saying a would-be rapist facing extremely credible allegations of both attempted rape and sexual assault does not belong on the Supreme Court and making up false allegations to try to smear a political opponent.

I don't understand how one is more credible than the other, other than Kav's rather boorish demeanor perhaps playing into negative stereotypes. Most women I know actually felt bad for Kav, because in his place, they saw their own brother or son.

Oh my God. Watching fuzzy and katharina twist themselves into knots having to create hypotheticals because Democrats are actually walking the walk when one of their own commits misconduct they criticized Republicans for... Beautiful

A clean sweep of the bronz medals in mental gymnastics indeed.

Sure, that's absolutely true of you. More hypocrisy and this time over an unsubstantiated claim.

At the risk of sounding like an MRA, "Believe all women" sounds very good as a slogan, but isn't feasible in real life because of cases like this. That being said, if further evidence comes to light, Fairfax should step down, and if necessary, be prosecuted.

I don't think any serious person says "believe all women", they say "women deserve to be heard". Big difference.

Who hasn't gone blackface? Come on, people, let's be real here...

I know this was meant to be snark, but its actually not if you've ever lived in rural VA and are above about 50. I knew a person  who went to a costume party dressed as a master and [chained] slave (with a black friend), many who argued that slavery wasnt that bad since masters would want their slaves to be happy, many who routinely used words such as macaca and the N-word,  and god help you if you're gay. Incidentally, the one who went to a party as a slave master was one of the few Carter supporters I knew among a sea of Reagan youth.  I haven't seen blackface, but it wouldn't surprise me in the least.

I'm not saying its right.

This is why I dont buy the arguments of those who claim VA is safe D, NOVA notwithstanding.

It's not snark. It was, at worst, half-snark rooted in truth, as a lot of my posts here are. This is 70s/early 80s Virginia we're talking about here, it was a very different place. Northam and Herring's actions in their subsequent life have shown that these were just ignorant misjudgments they made because they were not out of the norm for the time.

I've been against the MeToo crap since it appeared in the form of Obama's campus rape kangaroo kourts. If you were raped, go to the police. This woman sucked a guy's d*** in 2004 and now she's screaming rape to a right wing propaganda site to try and destroy him.

Disgusting. You should hang your head in shame.

Who said that blackface is okay? Just pointing out that there's an obvious gradient of racism here.

The implication that there is a massive difference between poor judgment 19 and 25 is stupid. Obviously, with age should come better judgment, but it doesn't make sense that a middle-aged man can explain away a mistake made at 19 while they cannot explain away a mistake made at 25. It's not as if Northam did this last week, or even 5 years ago.

Hence, the cognitive dissonance.

Forgive me if I sound like a broken record, but the biggest difference here I see is the governor denied this stuff with little credibility, whereas herring admitted it right up front.

I'm not pleased with what these idiots did in their college days 30 years ago, but I'm much more concerned about their character or lack thereof in 2019

Yes, I agree.

Kind of similar to how I am more disappointed in Elizabeth Warren's DNA test stunt that she did as a US Senator aged 69, more than what she did in her 20s and 30s as a young lawyer who sometimes identified as "American Indian" based on "family stories". (I don't want to go off topic, but the point I'm making is that what these politicians do now as "wise" elder leaders of society is what I really care about)

Committing actual election fraud to steal a state legislative chamber is far worse than anything Northam/FairFax/Herring did/are being accused of, no questions asked. We should not let someone guilty of such election fraud become Governor in any circumstance.

FairFax is innocent; the allegations against him are false.
Herring only made a minor bad joke when he was 19 years old that he has sincerely apologized for, and clearly shows that this does not resemble his current behavior.
Northam is the only of the 3 who actually needs to go.

Please tell me why a liberal college professor with a secure job at a well-funded institution would thrust herself into public with false rape allegations to ruin the career of the Democratic Lt. Gov of a state 2,000 miles away.

Saying women deserve to be heard does not mean that we should just automatically believe any accusations a woman makes. It only means we should treat the allegations as credible instead of rushing to find reasons for why they wouldn't be.

Good job by Fairfax with his latest statement. They need to start using the term coup d’état because that’s what this really is. We must hang onto power at all costs. We cannot let Republicans have the trifecta because of a couple bad pictures and two women being paid to say that Fairfax raped them.

Really makes me think

Sickening.

He says he’s left handed but apparently (according to the article and this picture) he writes with his right hand.

Lefties often write with their right hand, either because they were taught to, or to avoid the characteristic smudges and sloppiness of left-handed writing.

So it's official, both major parties in this country are OK with rape.

Roll Eyes Or maybe there is a difference between seriously listening to women who come forward with accusations, and automatically believing their word over the denials of the accused? I guarantee you if enough evidence mounts to sink Fairfax's denials, Virginia Dems will seek to remove him from office.

THIS IS NOT A F**KING TRIAL YOU F**KING F**KWITS

"beyond reasonable doubt" doesn't apply to whether or not a powerful man should get or keep a position of power

Nobody is talking about "beyond a reasonable doubt" or criminal liability. A mere accusation of wrongdoing does not inherently hold more weight than a denial. Certainly, the accuser(s) have fewer reasons to lie about the accusations than Fairfax does about the denial(s), but that alone does not affect the balance. If you cannot get that through your thick skull, you're just an idiot.
