Depends a lot on what kind of campaign McCain runs, and how much $ he's able to raise.  If he was going to run a 3rd party race in 2000, he probably would have ended up making some sharp breaks with the GOP on an assortment of issues in order to tack to the center.

This would also be a very interesting race if the US had a different electoral system.  If there was an instant runoff system for example, where people don't have quite the same incentive to avoid 3rd party candidates because of the "spoiler effect", the dynamics would be very interesting.
