If Trump had still managed to win the nomination (uncertain), hot take: Republicans wouldn't have cared. They'd rationalize it by saying that he was "still more likely to pick pro-choice judges" or something like that.

Sure, Republican voters would have rationalized it in a Clinton vs. Trump binary choice.  But being pro-choice would have seriously jeopardized Trump's chances of winning the nomination.  The primary would have been very different.
