Atlas has turned this common sense, real-life rule of thumb into a punchline, but the answer - as it usually does - lies in the middle.  Someone who calls you a sexist for typing "he" instead of taking the time to write "he or she"?  He or she can  off.

Someone who's complaining that he can't say negro anymore and it's hard to keep up with the new terms?  He can, too.
